@@HFCosta83 You're right. It doesn't filter the VIRUS. What it *does* filter are the droplets of water in our breath that contains the virus. Viruses don't just fly around naked. They're contained in water droplets that are large enough to be caught by the mask.

@@HFCosta83 A) The virus has an incubation period. You could be contagious and not know it. B) A lot of people have mild or no symptoms. You could be contagious and not know it, and giving it to someone who could die from it. It's a gamble every time. C) If you haven't been infected, you can still get infected. Wearing a mask lessens the chance of breathing in sick people's water droplets. D) By wearing a mask, you set a good example for others, making them feel more comfortable to wear their masks. We tend to copy each other, so if we all wear masks, we all feel okay with wearing masks and will do it more often. E) Not everything is about you. F) This is in response to you other comment. Kim Jong Un claimed he didn't have a butthole. Bill Cliton claimed he didn't cheat on his wife. Trump claims something stupid every other day. Leaders claim a lot of bullshit. If you have to be close to that much bullshit, you may as well wear a mask to block out some of the stink. (Also, how much good is that hydroxychloroquine doing for his pulmonary infection right now? Just saying...)

@djohnson6528 Precisely. If you are so paranoid and your mind was replaced with the TV, then by all means, wear a spacesuit or a hazmat suit or lock yourself up somewhere, to protect yourself, if you feel the need to. But do not force your paranoia and insecurity onto others. When it comes to health we are responsible for our own. Only children need to be protected by other people, the adults. But in this post-modern world, where people behave like ”entitled” children, anything goes. I do care for my own health and for my mother's health, yet I do not consider that a muzzle will protect me more than common sense of no sneezing or coughing without covering your mouth/nose when this happens and NOT ALL THE TIME to wear a muzzle. Wearing a muzzle is a display of blind obedience/ subservience and it is also a grotesque sight to see all these people like cattle wearing muzzles.

It is not the amount of information that makes people not wear masks. This video is simply wrong, Because it is framing one side arguments inside their own value structure which is a very disingenuous way to cover this topic. Most anti-maskers are not uninformed, they just value liberty more than they fear a bad flu, and when the government makes mask mandates, those sensitive to perceive tyranny dig their heels into the ground from the onset. I for one am perfectly fine with wearing a mask everywhere and I'm fine with stores and private businesses asking me to wear one, but When government says I must, I will not comply.

@@christopherdennis612 Well-said.
@snowangelnc
@snowangelnc 3 жыл бұрын
@@christopherdennis612 No, many anti-maskers are indeed grossly misinformed. One moment they are saying that the masks do absolutely nothing to prevent the spread of germs. Next they are saying that the mask force you to breathe your own germs back in and make you sick. Then they are saying that the germs do not even exist in the first place and it is all a conspiracy, or that they do exist but it's ok because only the old and the weak die from them and that's apparantly no big deal to them. I have heard each and every one of these arguments from them. They say that "they value liberty more than they fear a bad flu." That's faulty reasoning, because it this all or nothing assumption that any rule the government makes that they find personally inconvenient automatically means that we're living in tyrany. That is not an exaggeration, I've seen posts with photos of Nazi death camps with the message that that's the inevitable result of complying with a mask ordinance. The reason we have rules in a large part is to protect us from others that would harm us, whether intentionally by assault or unintentionally by reckless driving. What the anti-maskers either don't realize or don't care about is the fact that the masks are not so much to protect themselves as they are meant to protect everyone around them. That is like a drunk driver saying he should be allowed behind the wheel because he's decided he's willing to accept the risk of getting into a wreck and nobody should have the right to interfere with that personal decision.

As a Japanese person, I'm very confused by all of this mess? A lot of people wear masks here, because it's a respectful way to care for others and yourself. The main danger is over-heating in the summer, not being unable to breathe. You might feel restricted but your body is getting all the oxygen you need, the feeling mostly comes from the heat of your breath and not an actual lack of air. Summer advice from someone that has been wearing a mask for years in 80% humidity: reusable cotton masks are lighter, keep yourself well hydrated, stay in the shade, avoid going out at the hottest hours of the day, put a damp towel on your neck to cool down, wear a hat, carry a sun-umbrella (sorry, I couldn't find the correct English word), carry spare clean masks to change if yours gets too stuffy, wear breathable clothing (linen or cotton is best) There are probably more tips that I forgot, but I hope that these help people keep on wearing their masks and not get discouraged by the hot weather! Keep safe out there!

It is a shame how in the United States, people seem to feel that their right to do whatever they want overrules the sense of caring about more than just themselves. @Dzooky P2P The problem is that nobody knows when they get it, or when they become carriers. Ignoring this obvious fact is an insane level of denial, or willful ignorance. Self education is the first tenet of personal responsibility, so it's also insane for them to fail at grasping the most obvious of facts. Maybe, they're just not bright enough to rely on self responsibility. In which case, I encourage them to gather in large groups of like minded individuals, indoors, and to be educated the hard way. Perhaps the acknowledgement of the deaths of their leaders, and peers will open their eyes. It hasn't hit critical mass yet, but... It might. The death of anti-masker Herman Cain was a turning point for a few.

And medical grade masks such as N-95’s do in fact protect the wearer from acquiring a virus (flu, measles, COVID, etc.) If you don’t want to wear a mask, whatever, but don’t attempt to convince me of false information because I’ve seen the studies and know the facts. That and how people are using science to say that masks are ineffective because Covid molecules are smaller than the holes in a mask while also ignoring that those same molecules are usually attached to droplets. Sure masks aren't 100% effective, but they still help substantially. Don't even get me started on how some people are against abortion because all lives are important while believing in sacrificing those who are high risks of contracting the virus to save the economy. We could have reopened up safely by now and saved our economy like so many countries all around the world if we did things properly. If wearing a mask is the quickest way of getting back to how life was before the pandemic (unless we find a cure) then I'm all for it.

This made me think about what Innuendo Studios said about things like this: Yes, you *can* make a militarist care about the environment be reframing it as "resources to protect", but you probably *shouldn't* because then you'd be throwing peace activism under the bus. @@Pacmanghost I think the point they're arguing is that you can start to change someone's attitudes by first appealing to their beliefs, then attempt to argue for different ideas. Solely relying on the first option only works in the beginning and can lead to you having to somehow appeal to their beliefs any time you want to enact change. On a side note, I'm wondering what you mean by extremism (I think you're confusing it with fanaticism, but I could be wrong) because I've seen many people argue that you should never be an extremist and later call themselves "true centrists." It just takes away any meaning you could have gathered from the argument and instead suggests always following the middle option because apparently that is truly the "most important" aspect of the discussion.

You also missed reports of doctors getting silenced in their practice or on social media, and prescriptions getting refused by the pharmacy for treatments because the president referenced studies being done with a drug, and how that drug became political.

I remember raging at the time of the stupidity of that messaging. I don't think your best case is plausible. They told people not to wear masks. Even if you grant they were needed for front line workers, it would have been better to advise people to make their own or use a handkerchief, which could have helped some at the time and perhaps prevented the issue we see now with their lack of credibility. It caused such a kerfuffle at the time, people saying that there wasn't sufficient evidence that they were helpful despite some pretty common sense reasons to suspect they would be better than nothing. A joke paper was referenced at the time, that we cannot conclude parachutes are effective due to the lack of double blind parachute studies. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC300808/#__ffn_sectitle Yes, there are a lot of ignorant people who don't understand biology and chafe at authority. But put yourself in their shoes. If someone who claims to be an authority in a field which you don't understand contradicts themselves in the span of months, why would you trust them? Masks are more than a mild inconvenience for some people. They reduce airflow and asthmatics etc. can be very uncomfortable with them.

I agree, but it leads us to a really tough place. The inherent process of science is to rerun tests over and over until you see patterns. The scientific method is not immediate, and bad research exists. Usually, years of replication studies or related research can help shine light on errors, outliers, and sampling effects. However, in this time of crisis, science is more forced to be transparent. That means that the public sees that science is an imperfect process that corrects itself. I can understand why this would breed public distrust in science if findings seem contradicting or unstable. However, it is also sad that people end their engagement when research is in its infancy and is bound to require modification than when we have enough research to establish more certain patterns. As a scientist myself who is very interested in public outreach, I feel like this is a no-win situation. Transparency is the foundation of trust, but transparency without context and patience is a formula for misinformation.

@Leshenn
@Leshenn 4 жыл бұрын
@@eleven864 I recommend you talk to anyone who has a masters or above in microbiology. In short, decades of research on different viruses would not tell us anything about how this one behaves. The size of viral molecules and vectors (e.g. the way the virus travels using things like spit) are one of the main things that determines the effectiveness of masks. Also, how long the virus can exist without a host on various materials or in the air, the role of ventilation and similar variables, the amount of inhaled particles required to get various populations sick, and understanding the nature of a new and unique virus are all things that influence the scientific process and findings. Also, it is worth mentioning that the best comparison is this virus to SARS, a previously known and highly infectious virus. Except this virus has a different shape and behaves slightly differently than anything discovered before, hence the need to basically find solutions from scratch. I hope this information helps. 👍 Sometimes science takes a two prong approach. People research the virus and try to find solutions based off its characteristics, and people look at effective precautions in the real world then work backwards to determine why they are effective. Masks have been a major way countries have effectively prevented spread since they limit the ability for the particles to spread with an effective vector, and they limit the chance that particles which get through one mask will also get through yours (though this is generally a small help, as it is more important for the person with the virus to wear a mask). Lastly, if one only is exposed to the scientific knowledge through news or political outlets, the knowledge is even more prone to being skewed or pressured to serve an economic purpose. I always find looking at recommendations within scientific communities or articles to provide less whiplash when findings evolve

Raising health awareness and inflating cigarette prices did a lot more than calling people morons. Saying this as somebody who quit, the first thing I wanted to do after being chided for smoking was to light up a cigarette and raise the finger, it's a normal response to aggressive behaviour.

I wear my mask whenever I am out in public BUT NOTE when I am doing my Fit Walk Full Cardio Workout. In order to quiet the mask shamers, I wore my mask for four days while doing my workouts. The effect was devastating: I thought that today was the day before. I skipped yesterday. Wearing a mask while working out is worse than taking drugs because it cuts off sufficient oxygen to both your body & your brain. Now, I just ignore mask shamers and be maskless during my workouts.

It probably DIDN'T help that the public was initially told that masks weren't effective, told not to buy them because there was a shortage for healthcare workers, and then were required to wear them by law despite there being said shortage. If you had your masks already, you most likely had disobeyed the former order at the time to fulfill the latter one. Turns out, giving contradictory, self-serving instructions is a REALLY good way to make sure that nobody trusts what you say.

@@sababugs1125 Maybe, if not for the fact that the "masks aren't effective" and the "don't buy masks because WE need them" orders were occurring simultaneously(and from the same organization). They had enough information to know that they needed masks for healthcare workers, and lied to the public to try and get more. There's nothing easy about choosing who gets those resources, but because of how that decision was handled, there's no version of this where they're now suddenly the "good guys."
