Let's look at some studies into sexual assault and see how the smartest, most 'rational' antifeminist on the internet debunks them, shall we?

SOURCES:
www.ncjrs.gov/...
The CSA study - the originator of the 1 in 5 claim, and also by the way funded by the same department of justice that funded the one Sargon claims is somehow more factual.
www.aau.edu/up...
The survey Sargon thought was the 1 in 5 study, for some reason, and also misreads
www.bjs.gov/con...
The survey Sargon most likely barely read at all before concluding it was facts (I assume because, for methodological reasons he doesn't understand, the resulting figures are lower than the other studies of this phenomenon)
• Vice President Biden S...
Biden's speech where he cites this statistic. It is very passionate and moving. I strongly recommend watching the whole thing, if you aren't Sargon and have the time to actually watch things. He raises several actually-existing laws that still prevent the prosecution of rapists in various states across america.
www.politifact....
Politifact checking Biden's speech, concluding that it is consistent with other studies but has methodogical problems worth considering about how representative it is and that more study should be (and is being!) conducted.
• President Obama’s Mess...
Obama's message where he cites this statistic
• Video
Sargon's response to the 'myth'.
• Video
Garrett's response to Sargon where he also points out these problems, along with several more, and does it better than me
www.virtualmuse...
The Virtual Museum of Iraq, which directly points out that it is impossible to tell if this is actually a statue of Sargon. Yet another source that I assume passed Carl by because it's not on Wikipedia.

i always find it interesting that there is such a big emphasis on what's legally viewed as rape - not the inherent morality of whatever happened, but just what the law agrees is assault

That's because they"re taking the fact that rape is immoral as a given. It's treated like a constant in a science equation. That's why the debate is the variables of what exactly is rape.

I was assaulted by my partner when I was 15. It was the first time I ever had sex and I wanted him to stop, he didn't stop. I didn't break up with him until over 2 years of abuse later because of shit like this. How could it be rape or abuse? He was my boyfriend, he had the right. I even started the act willingly! (After months of threaths of leaving me if I didn't do it and telling me he was ashamed of still being a virgin and how it was my fault). When I left him and it all came to light, most of our mutual friends (all guys) stayed by my side, though. I still keep in touch with all of them, they were extremely supportive and made sure he couldn't harrass me or bother me in the slightest after the breakup (he tried). That was a great surprise, I realized they were great friends and it gave me back some faith in humanity. I keep very close contact with one of them, who was assaulted by a female partner. It's rare but it does happen. He told me other men weren't very caring or supportive when it happened to him, and he was very happy to have me there to talk about it. I've always been very open about what happened to me, so I guess that helped him.

Same. Except first time at 18, it only started falling under the legal definition of rape in my country a year later, too. If you're angry at the idea of broadening the definition of sexual assault...you're probably one of the reasons the definition of sexual assault needed to be broadened.
@gurusmurf5921
@gurusmurf5921 Ай бұрын
I'm not angry but think it was a bad call. Grabbing someone's butt under the right circumstances can be called SA and what Brock Turner did was called SA. These two things require different responses and different levels of disapproval. When I hear "SA" I don't really know what people are talking about or how exactly I should feel about it. Then I have to act like a creeper and go looking for uncomfortable details, which is annoying and often stomach churning. I think it would be better to have more terms than trying to lump everything into one category. It doesn't make the less serious things seem more serious, it makes the more serious things seem less serious.
@yomilemondragon1721
@yomilemondragon1721 Ай бұрын
@@gurusmurf5921 I do see where you're coming from, but the whole point is to draw attention to the fact that minor cases of SA, and things that previously weren't considered SA, are a lot more serious than many people think. Men don't tend to understand why women feel the fear they do, and that's understandable, and not mens fault- they simply don't have any reason to. I, myself, as an autistic woman who has never been particularly social, didn't for a long time, and thought other women were overreacting for much longer than I'm willing to admit, when it turns out I just...wasn't picking up on the cues that I should have, and should've been a lot more afraid than I was. But I understand not being threatened for your wellbeing, and not understanding why others are, in situations where the average woman does and _should._ Broadening the definition of SA shouldn't devalue serious cases, it should grant value to minor ones, and if doesn't then I'm afraid you're looking at it from the wrong angle and need to ask yourself why your reaction is to dismiss more serious cases than to consider why minor ones might be included. Sorry, I know it sounds like I'm telling you off because flat text doesn't really convey tone lol- I do understand what you mean because that's exactly how I used to think!
@gurusmurf5921
@gurusmurf5921 Ай бұрын
@@yomilemondragon1721 I'm not dismissing more serious cases, I just don't know if what the person is talking about is serious when they use the term "SA". The fact that I bother to look it up, despite not wanting to know the gory details, should tell you that I'm not dismissing it. I'm saying that it has made things unclear and I don't appreciate that you've warped my words in such a way. Let's try again. If a business calls every size "Extra Super Gigantor Size" it doesn't make the small sizes look bigger. It just makes people not know what size is being talked about. Eventually the label "Extra Super Gigantor Size" won't make people think that the thing being talked about is large. It's not because they need to do some introspection, it's because if you call different things the same thing then the meaning is unclear when you use the words. That's how words work and how people work. It would be better to teach people that these less serious things are bad as well. Maybe add a qualifier like "First Degree" "Second Degree" etc. In conclusion, maybe it should make people think that the lesser stuff is more serious (and I am not saying the lesser stuff is not serious,, don't you dare warp my words like that), but it doesn't. It does the opposite. Not because of misogyny, not because people love SA, but because that's what happens when you consistently make things unclear.

@@gurusmurf5921 this is a poor argument. There are degrees of SA the same way there are degrees of any crime. I appreciate that you are trying to be level headed and fair here, but at the end of the day, yes, SA is an umbrella of crimes and grabbing someone's butt is a type of SA. And r*pe is a kind of SA... But it's more likely to actually be called r*pe, which kind of eliminates the problem you're conjuring here. Because groping someone is NOT r*pe. So if you want clear terminology, there it is.

Honestly what even is the point of all this debate. It doesn't matter if it's 1%(it's not), as long as sexual assault happens, it's a problem that needs to be addressed. Everyone agrees that drunk driving is bad but only a few people percentage-wise do it. There are still measures to prevent all that. Because it saves lives with a small change? How is this even a debate, how is consent a debate.

@@vladlu6362 It's true you are unlikely to change the worst offenders. But you CAN change all the people stuck in-between who delude themselves into wanting to take 'any opportunity', ignore resistance or reject real communication ( 'oh but men LIKE -insert thing that wasn't communicated/consented to at all here-' falls under this - that's a tragedy that needs to end as well). Knowing about consent helps that. It also helps victims to know what it is, why they feel the way they do, and thus have access to information to recover. It helps relationship rape too. Not all of them, but some. Even if you couldn't stop it all, having a better recovery system than silenceTM is needed. Even if the statistics didn't change their numbers, if the aftermaths would be less debilitating, that'd be a huge improvement imho. My own 'ze experience' wrecked me, but - as super fucking dumb as it sounds - the dude would not have done it knowingly - he'd have hated to be a rapist, and he never repeated it or similar things afterwards after being told off - the relationship was ruined regardless and fizzled out (and it does sound pathetic, but trust me, that was an avoidable one.) The pain is not simply caused by someone stepping over intimate boundaries, it's also in actively ignoring the pain it causes and has caused. In not stopping. In not re-negotiating. In not talking about it afterwards. Thus also ignoring any chance of rebuilding trust. Tackling consent? Being aware of consent? It may not stop impulsive BS, but it sure would have lessened the hurt caused. All the discussion about rape? That's helped me find the resources I need, the language I need, and it helped me identify a lot of red flags I am now very keen to avoid. (like being VERY interested in whether or not certain underwear colors signal wanting sex.. to which the answer is .. why would you even want to use what someone put on in the morning as a signal of what they want NOW? if you are in the presence of someone in undies and you don't know, you need to COMMUNICATE, not try to decipher their clothes geez)

It really, really says something when there are so many people saying “I’m so glad I grew out of my anti-feminist stage!” I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say they were a feminist who converted to being an anti-feminist by “growing out of it.” That’s because most anti-feminists are mostly a bunch of edgy teenage boys who only watch reactionary KZbinrs like Sargon to reaffirm their existing beliefs. I remember when I used to hate Anita Sarkesian based solely on what these dumbass reactionaries had to say, even though I had never watched her video. And it’s crazy because her videos aren’t at all bad, I’m not gonna pretend I agree with everything she says, but she did not deserve even a fraction of the amount of hate she got. Her crime was that she voiced her opinions about video games, and I fell into the trap of hating her.

@@reckonerwheel5336 Because they want to pretend that there is a secret feminist organization out to cut off their penises. Seriously, a lot of young boys look at feminism as a personal attack against themselves. Most of them don't want to admit that they have certain advantages because they are men, so they overreact and pretend that feminism is a stupid unreasonable movement filled with dumbasses. It all has to do with insecurity really, and convincing themselves that feminism is secretly out to oppress men make these young guys feel better about themselves. They convince themselves that THEY are the ones who are smart and know the truth about feminism. Again, just look at Anita. I have never seen her say anything bad or hateful towards men, but she was pointing out sexism in video games. And that struck a chord with young boys who thought "Hey, this feminist is saying this video game is sexist! She must be saying I'm sexist!" Regardless of what you think of her opinions (a lot of the points she makes are actually quite reasonable), the fact that she garnered so much hate was telling of what these boys were really like. Hell, a lot of these people who review her videos have to edit them or talk about things out of context to make her seem crazy. But hey, if I can grow out of it, a lot of these boys can too.

Trying to fall into relativism of "everyone does it" is just shallow self justification for acting like you know what you are talking about without the proper knowledge. It's nearly Dunning Krueger, because it implies everyone else is faking it too so you must be a genius to figure it out. Reality check, some people do read whole books on the subject they study, come up with theories, test them and then write about it. It's called the scientific method and the basis of academic knowledge. Then again, how could I argue with you if you won't pay attention to the very words I use? Words are already limited tools to transfer knowledge, if you cannot and will not try to interpret them in full, you won't be able to understand the arguments made. @@dream-lh4pc Maybe so. But all of that is irrelevant anyways, I was simply countering the idea that talking to women was an effective way of determining the efficacy of the 1 in 5 statistic. Some might talk to many women and come to the conclusion that the 1 in 5 statistic is lowballing like brennenderopa, while others like myself may determine from personal experience that the 1 in 5 statistic is outrageously high. Which is why anecdotal evidence isn't actually evidence, anecdotes can contradict each other and there are thousands of them. So in statistical analysis, however many women you have talked to is a statistical irrelevance. And statistically speaking, the 1 in 5 figure is, to say the least, a misrepresentation of reality. The survey used to come to that conclusion not only had a small survey size, but the questions were often misleadingly worded. There have been studies that have come to a much smaller number with much larger survey sizes and more productive wording. So to argue the efficacy of a statistical figure with how many people you personally have talked to should be discouraged.

The thing that never made sense for me: even if you believe that the study isn't universally realavent or that 1/5 is an exaggeration, why does that invalidate the idea. Even if 1/5 was an estimate (it's not) but 1/10 would still be a massive problem. If you don't believe it's 20%, then 10% of people would still be horrific and worth raising awareness and combating. 1/15 is a problem. Arguing the study is wrong, that anyone that uses the study is wrong in all they say, is not helping anyone.

Analyzing Male Slavery, did you watch the video? I'm not remotely convinced the statistic is false but anyway, for the sake of argument... I'm not quite sure how discussion of statistics on the number of victims of a crime could possibly be used against the suspect of a crime. Obviously using statistics like this (irrelevant of their accuracy) in individual cases makes no sense but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be used in/to raise discussion of the issue. My point is that dismissing the entire issue because you believe that one study on the matter is exaggerated is silly. The reason somone would use that statistic is to say rape is a problem, telling somone you believe that it's slightly less of a problem than they said - and then dismissing them outright as a liar because of this - is avoiding the discussion. 20% is a massive problem, slightly less than 20% is still a massive problem and action should always be taken to reduce rape anyway. In answer to your question, I do have empathy for men, but I also have empathy for rape victims which is why I'm not arguing with people trying to reduce rape, based on them using facts that aren't even false. Also is calling me a cunt really necessary?

Analyzing Male Slavery, I'm fairly sure threats of sexual assault are... Threats of sexual assault. I'm not entirely sure what there is to be confused about there. "I'll fucking rape you" would be an example of a threat of sexual assault. The Stat sargon used didn't include unreported incidents so is also perhaps not entirely accurate. The point I keep making is there is controversy about the precise statistics, but I don't care about that. They all say there is rape and sexual assault and a lot of feminists think this is a bad thing and want there to be less rape. I would also like there to be less rape. Calling people and entire movements liars, because they use a study you believe to be exaggerated, hinders their ability to actually try make change and reduce rape. If you don't feel there is enough evidence of 'enough rape' for you to make any effort for change that is fine, but why do you need to actively hinder those that are?
@jaybretherton6246
@jaybretherton6246 6 жыл бұрын
SuccededHail97, I probably wouldn't use the statistic myself, as I've said there is controversy on its accuracy, however using that to construct a narrative that 'the femanists' or people trying to combat rape shouldn't be trusted and are liars, is counterproductive and doesn't help rape victims. Even the creators of the study say its not universally realavent, doesn't mean rape isn't a problem. I never defended the study, i said using the fact the study is controversial to shut down any conversation on the matter is bad.

This is why a lot of people don't report rape unless it seems like an emergency, as seen with Kavanaugh. Ford got threatened horrifically; Kavanaugh wasn't even made to wait until more information could be looked at. @@mivicalthe fact that feminist discourse has largely operated outside the realm of evolutionary biology is a deadringer for how wrong it is in trying to ascribe intention to the behaviour of men and women. In fact, any science it involves itself with is to discredit the science of biology as it relates to humans. To a feminist, humans operate outside the realm of what biology can tell us about behaviour. Referring to leftist biologist Robert Sapolsky this is wrong. See his lecture series for more details. Particularly the first lecture or 10. The blank slate theory of behaviour is also demonstrably wrong. In the nature vs nurture debate, neither one stands out as a clear explainer for any human behaviours. Twin studies show us this. Pronounced sex differences in Scandinavian countries who have had the biggest equality mandate ever also shows us this. Feminism discourse largely rests on BST to explain that almost all differences in economics between men and women are due to oppression. Feminism is part of post modern thinking so no one body of intellectual work or set of cultural values should be more valuable than any other. And yet, western feminists commonly seek to export their superior values of gender relations to the world in an act of ideological imperialism. This is best exemplified by the American democrats.

@@kordellswoffer1520 I think I understand you better. Firstly, it seems to me that antifeminism is hardly a stance that values critical thinking. Broadly though, arguments that connect to pathos (that is, to our emotions) often become the start of more reasoned reconsideration. So yes, witnessing the horror of sexual violence up close and it's fallout in the life of someone I loved changed my perspective quite drastically and quite suddenly. But, with nearly a decade separating that emotional experience from the present, I'd like to think my position is now well reasoned even if it's genesis was in personal horror. That is to say, I think you're suggesting some sort of divide between reason and emotion that doesn't exist. My school took part in one of those surveys. Don't remember exactly which one, but it asked about rape and sexual assault. I took it two or three times, in different years, and answered the same way every time, that no, I had not experienced anything like rape or sexual assault. But here's the thing: I *was* sexually assaulted. In my second year of high school, by my at the time boyfriend. You see, no one ever told us about what coercion was, and that's what he used. He badgered and pushed and refused to take no for an answer until I did what he wanted. So, I thought it was consentual, even though I only said yes because he wouldn't let it go. Really, there is a horrible lack of education for young people, both men and women, about what consent is and what to do when the person who hurt you is someone you love. Unrelated but it turned out he lied about his sexual experience, and had in fact been intimate with another person, even though he swore he hadn't. When I eventually (at the pestering of my doctor) got an std test done, thankfully I was negative. Be safe, kids. Don't date assholes, and always wear a condom, even if it's "just" oral.

So, just showing the interview would be enough to debunk the study, which could be done in 1 minute. Even if that pattern is not the same as this survey, that would not mean its results are bunk... that's only the case if there is an inconsistency within the survey. @@wocxdid8068 you were perfectly clear but I still disagree. Maybe it's just my college experience but I don't recall a single class (with the possible exception of my extremely libertarian government class) that didn't back up it's claims with either research or statistics. I never took a gender studies class but I did go through most other softer science/humanities classes at least a little (I'm a history major and was undecided for my associates). I've been exposed to most "sjw" ideas both in and out of class and I hardly find them to be on the level of creationism. I can't speak for gender studies as a class but I am aware of quite a bit of studies into transgender and other gender related issues (hbomberguy has a clip from his bill Nye vs. Pseudoscience part 2 where he flashes quite a few studies showing that they at least exist.). Not all studies are equal or even good certainly but there's growing research in support of these ideas. I'll agree that universities shouldn't teach ideas as science without scientific backing (and I hope I've explained at least sort of why there is some science in gender studies and other sjw classes) even then though the ideas expressed could be put into a gender philosophy class rather than science. Maybe we have somewhat diverting areas we think university should cover; I think university should be a place to cover ideas that people likely haven't been exposed to or had properly conveyed and then cover where the scientific consensus seems to lead. For softer sciences like gender studies (which really seems to me, more of a philosophy than a science but there is certainly a growing amount of science there) there often is barely a substantial consensus if at all. University should only teach one scientifically accurate idea if it's physics, engineering, or chemistry where there is only one scientifically accurate idea for 95+% (quibbles over quantum physics not withstanding), but with softer sciences like gender studies there simply isn't the consensus to justify not looking into the new claims. Maybe all of gender studies is basically false, maybe man=penis woman=vagina and all societal roles and expectations are justified biologically and perfectly applicable to everyone as is the standard view. Maybe it's the gender studies view where none of that is true. Maybe it's some combination or even neither. Either way university seems like the best place to look objectively and I fail to see this as anything other than an attempt to stop the conversation altogether, especially since, as I tried to explain earlier, most people are exposed to new ideas through university and the ideas presented here are very new to most people. Sorry I'm long-winded and a bit rambly here I don't really have an excuse.

rattregoondoof I've read the whole thing. If you have the skills it takes to resume your ideas a bit better, of course, it would be more optimal as long answers are harder to reply to for obvious reasons. Anyway, let's go. As you said, you never took one of these courses, so even though it might be true that there is some science there? You do not have what it takes to judge if they sufficiently back up enough their claim before teaching them as true. I do agree that universties must be a place where people should be encouraged to look at new ideas. The problem with gender studies is not that their ideas must not be studied, it just is that if scientists looking into their ideas did not certified them as relatively true, they shouldn't be taught as true. Just like creationisme, as long as their claim has not be proven to be true, they shouldn't be taught as so, and this is ONE of the real problem. But no, you know why people like Sargon of Akkad wanted to dismantle them? It was because they were harmful. People graduating from gender study classes ends up with certificate and diplomas with little to not value, a twisted idea of the world, and a lot of the teachers in the gender studie courses? Advocate for sexism, racism, forced diversity, and ends up making violent and biased students just like the case in Evergreen college if I remember well its name. This is the real reason, why people like Sargon tries to take it down!
@thelaymaneveryman
@thelaymaneveryman 8 жыл бұрын
Sargon pulled the same thing in a video he made about Laurie Penny. He cited a Cosmopolitan article in which he used the percentages in a survey that were favorable to his position. The problem is those numbers were inaccurate when is came down to who supports feminism for both men and women. The numbers he cites are low but when the definition of feminism was given the percentages in favor of feminism went up for both men and women. He left that part out and made the claim that the article was trying to say that the majority of people do not support feminism. He changed the context of the article to suit his ends. Sargon is a known liar and bullshit artist who makes thousands a month doing so. Nice to see you give a shout out to Garret. I hear people say what happens on the internet is not an aspect of the real world. Sargon is a real person spewing absolute bullshit and has traded intellectual honesty for money. I know there will be those who say I am attacking him not his arguments but I do not have to. Winters, Garret, this guy, and others have shown him to be a liar or at the very least misinformed. What makes a con man great is those being taken do not realize they are being worked.

Do you realize that the affirmative action is to remediate the fact, backed up by numerous studies, that companies have the tendency to choose men because of their sex? And that's missing OP's point of sargon erroneously citing sources. Their point was that sargon often does that so it's not wrong in the least bit.

Wyatt Dubcak What are you trying to tell me. That the legislation that Sweden passes is indicative of feminism as a whole. What you are doing is taking one example and conflating that to be the whole. This is how creationists have tried to take down evolution, they take an anomaly that fits their view and think that is enough. By the way if you are going to "cite" something provide the source. I cite the moon is made of cheese. You see using the word cite and actually providing a citation/source are two different things.

Regardless of the true figure is it really a bad idea to educate people on consent and sexual assault? Is this really the biggest horror humanity has ever seen? Just like the argument against trigger warnings it seems so stupid to argue against because in the grand scheme of things it causes little to no inconvenience especially compared to the benefits it could possibly bring (help reduce sexual assaults / help not traumatise victims of horrific events). Meh I'm probably just not rational enough.

No violence, no rape. You can freeze up and be unable to respond without violence, though. It would've counted a year later, when the law was amended to include other scenarios and circumstances such as "in a moment of surprise". Not that I would've reported it at the time as that guy was my lover, nvm that I didn't fully understand what had happened then or how to even articulate it. But I sure felt its effects.

@Leif Eriksson Maybe you don't understand how debating work. Hbomberguy only disputed Carl's factually incorrect claims with his own sources. He doesn't need to prove the 1 in 5 study right, nor was the video intended to do so. It was to debunk how Sargon's attacks on the 1 in 5 study were wrong. Again, factually wrong I remind you. And so you claimed how he cherry picked in his retort of Sargon, even though all his sources are counter claims specifically made in mind for the arguments Sargon was making. All you needed to do was make further counter claims as too why his sources or claims were invalid. Instead you just mindlessly accused him of cherry picking his facts and information, because that takes no work and burden of proof or citation on your part. All of your other issues you are whining about in your comment have very little to do with the point of the video and you are quite literally criticizing Hbomberguy for not going off topic? It entered its ‘Cretaceous’ period for me when I followed a channel called ‘the quartering’ and he actively saved me from anti feminism….because all he did was Moan about it ALL the time and I eventually just saw one post he uploaded that made me reactively unsub…and for some reason I went ‘oh fuck it’ and unsubbed the entire lot of them. I dunno what it was. I think I got so sick of being negative all the time and I just ripped out the roots of anything negative that I was consuming and gradually I became more open minded and content. I remember playing last of us 2, and being conflicted on it regarding its story and writing but overall thinking it was a decent game…out of curiosity I checked back on what all the channels I use to watch said and ofc “this is just pure left wing, anti-man propaganda and you should just stay the fuck away from it.” That really solidified it for me, having my opinion on something and comparing it to their extremes.

When someone runs into a building and kills people, the family of that person gets threatened for at least as long as there's media coverage as if they were responsible for the incident (www.theguardian.com/society/2011/oct/28/my-child-the-murderer ). People don't think when they hear or read about stuff like child abuse, rape or murder. Mere allegations are enough to make them feel angry, whether the person is guilty or not.
