This is like the pound-for-pound best TV show ever made. Its not that long but it has everything. Excellent story, casting/actors, cinematography, mood and atmosphere of the show is second to none. The acting in this show, IMHO beats out breaking bad at the time they were both on tv.

Yes, the first season is the best one, but that doesn't mean the other seasons are bad. Especially the fourth season was pretty strong again in my opinion. I really liked Jodie Foster's performance in it. And the setting of an isolated town during the long night in Alaska was something you don't see that often.

The type of show that True Detectives is, is called an Anthology. Where each season (or even each episode) is it's own self contained story. American Horror Story and Black Mirror are other examples of Anthologies

I love this tv show. My favorite season is season 3, I don't know why it grew on me. Then season 1, incredible. Then season 4, the vibe is particular and I love Jodie Foster. Then season 2, which was still enjoyable! Enjoy the ride !

Oh, man. You guys are in for a TREAT. The "literary" style of the series is what we call Southern Gothic. It deals with eccentric characters and derelicts of society, with some supernatural elements and also, in this case, a hardboiled detective story. Probably one of the best seasons in TV history. Regarding your opening comments about shorter, self-contained series, Fargo is another of that kind. Each season is a standalone story, based on a real crime. It's well worth checking out.

One of my all time favorite seasons of television, right up there with Band of Brothers. I remember thinking when this first came out, “what makes a major movie star ( McConaughey )do a TV series?” Because that just doesn’t happen too much, even now. I figured it had to be the script. And, indeed, the story is amazing. And Woody Harrelson, who is always a stand out in whatever he does, knocks it out of the park in this one. I’m looking forward to going on this ride with you guys.

After doing True Detective, I would recommend Fargo. It's another anthology series. First three seasons are very strong. It's based on the Fargo movie, taking place in similar areas of the American Midwest, with similar dark humor and quirky characters but telling new stories in the same universe across several different time periods. The seasons are very loosely connected but can be enjoyed as wholly independent stories.
