I was born in 1959 into a Nationalist, Dutch Reformed Afrikaans culture, both parents teachers. I experienced and witnessed the 'other side'. I can remember as a six, seven year old child the consternation and fear which resulted from the assassination from Verwoerd. The 'swart gevaar' concept caused nightmares in my childhood. My Mom was still fighting the British, my dad was politically involved. I must confess that I was very confused and asked very unpopular questions as a child and teenager. There is a severe lack of historic education, even my own children do not understand what Apartheid was. As a country we went through the 90's onwards not talking about it. The result are vacuums of ignorance often filled with false information. Well done on bringing a clear, objective perspective on this.

He believed that Apartheid would be instituted and carried through permanently. The reality is that Apartheid is still deeply entrenched into Verwoed's subjects, particularly those who were gaining from it.They believed it so much they carried it forward decades after. Biko was accurate to say "The most potent weapon in the hand of the oppressor, is the mind of the oppressed." Verwoed through media systemically oppressed the mind of his own subjects into believing that Apartheid is the manuscript of their superiority and went on to justify the atrocities waged against aBantu bendabuko. The fact that Palestinian Apartheid and South African Apartheid are birthed within the same time, begs the question if Apartheid in South Africa had been left to its devices, what state would South Africa be in? Fortunately this dark notion was not be tolerated permanently and aBantu were able to get the lid off...but yes we need to understand that we are in action pulling ourselves out of a deep and vile barrel and we are by far not yet Uhuru, and so we must strive for it and remind ourselves of the actual terrain, our historical topography.

I'm currently on a journey to understand the complete and truthful picture of South Africa's and Africa's history. This journey was inspired by the fearless leader Steve Biko's book "I write what I like" I'm currently stuck at the following point and if possible can you kindly share resources to where I can find information regarding the following: 1) South Africa Pre-Colonialsm. 2) Colonialism's impact on South Africa. 3) Anglo-Boer war and it's impact. 4) Apartheid impact on South Africa. 5) Democratic South Africa 6) How to reverse the impact of both Colonialism and Apartheid so that the black people of the future will live in an truly equal and non-racial South Africa. I feel I have an understanding of the above,but I feel it's too surface level and I want to dig deeper. I hope you don't mind my long text😂 Thank you and keep up the amazing work. I will most definitely keep supporting.
@nettahunter705815 күн бұрын
@@cutinndala5172 precolonial history will be found in archaeological and anthropology books about that era. Also something to look into are reports and written work from that time, mostly in old Dutch but I think some will be translated. The history and writings from the Portuguese sea-fairers 1400 +. Old maps are very informative ass well as graveyards, local churches and books about certain geographical areas. Shipwreck histories around the Cape of Good Hope up to Natal, architecture, museums, monuments very important and it will give you the feeling of the time. Some legwork, lots of reading and I have indicated some search terms. Lots written about the Anglo-Boer war, but then also look at the British and German history in SA. The colonisation of Southern Africa especially what we now know as South Africa was totally different from the rest of the world and the rest of Africa. Try to see past poor oom Jan, he was an administrator and not here so long. Really not as important as much of the history tries to make him. Then there was the French Hugeneuts (Franse Hugenote) in the Western Cape starting the wine industry. My Dutch ancestry predates Oom Jan by a few years, then there was some French ancestry, some Malaysian and Eva Krotoa who was the daughter of Harry die Strandloper. Many old Afrikaans and Cape coloured people share Eva and Malaysian ancestry. We actually used to be the same volk, I personally think we still are. There is a lot of history. The reasons for The Great Trek, there was actually three and they went into different directions, Afrikaans joke, if you put five Afrikaners around a braaivleisvuur, you will end up with five different churches and five different political parties. There were two Vryheidsoorloë (wars for freedom) now known as the Anglo-Boer wars. Boere fighting against British Colonisation. Then the Zulu and Xhosa histories, the Mfecani (sorry spelling). One cannot understand the reasons for Apartheid and the various social engineering projects without understanding the various peoples histories, psychi, cultures, religions. You will find offensive words and concepts in old documents and books, but see it through the eyes and the time and perspective of the author. I for instance cannot today understand what and how a Portuguese sailor from the 1400's saw and experienced the word, so I will go and read about his time and world, I can be deeply hurt about British newspaper articles about the Boors. I need to see and understand it from that perspective. You got the drift. Happy searching, reading, visiting historical sites. I apologise for my long post and for jumping in here.

I'm a white, Afrikaans speaking South African, born in the 60s. Thank you for giving me a new perspective on our history. Just like any black South African who grew up ANC and believe(d) them, we trusted the National Party. Until we grew older and realised this was all wrong. That is why we voted for change when a referendum was called. Unfortunately it took a long time for change to arrive. It felt like we were on a see saw which had to stabalise and not lean over to 'our' side. We were SO happy when 1994 arrived. We looked forward to taking hands and working together. Being a teacher I loved the idea to have ALL our learners in one class - to learn from each other. That's our duty on earth, isn't it?! Hendrick Van der Berg is the evil force behind Apartheid. At the time Hendrick Verwoed was Murdered, he had a speach where he was going to end Apartheid. That letter was not read. MK is pushing for that letter to be read. There is a delibarate effort to remove the book from the shelves, you might have to try amazon. It will put context to many events throughout apartheid. Dumitry Tsafendas was a previous employee of American British Tabbacco and was used and hypnotised and placed in Parliment to Murder Verword. He had a known history of his incidencies as a cover up and to suggest that he was unstable.

Apparently they embarked at Durban in 3 massive ships and disembarked near Egypt. Jan Smuts a veteran himself apparently told them some will come back some wont, some maimed for life. Those 10000 were shipped to Italy into a temp consentration kamp but was rescued not long after as the Germans has basically lost most of north Africa at that point. Lett ALL the kids learn EVERYTHING, then we can move forward.

@@markriordan9010 Such unbelievable bias was subjected to before 1994, where the curriculum taught about settlers who came and discovered land, minerals, which natives were already there and using. What discovery? What is discovery? Fortunately/unfortunately the whole apartheid as you put it is not only rammed down the throats of the white kids but kids of the Republic.

All children in SA in all public and government (private probably also) schools are taught from exactly the same syllabus. The history of Verwoerd and Apartheid has been in school syllabuses in SA for the past at least 40 years.
@markriordan901025 күн бұрын
@@ChrisTus83 It's not about them all being taught the same syllabus, it's about what is IN the syllabus....it's aimed at the kids being brainwashed that Whites are baddies, emphasising the evils of apartheid, colonialism, slavery etc. There's no nention of achievements by the Afrikaners, the British and other foreigners, and it also avoids any conflicts (of which there were many) between African tribes, or anything negative about Black Africans. Why not just tell the kids the WHOLE story...preferably TRUTHFULLY, so that they can make up their own minds. If you think the Boers and the British & European settlers contributed nothing, then you are a blind person not wanting sight.

Thank you very much for this, for far too long our education system has "glamorized western history". Thanks for these history episodes. Hopefully eventually you will expand into the broader colonial subjugation by the British Empire. Many times in South Africa the British Empire is glossed over and Apartheid, because of its recency, is seen as the all consuming villain. But Apartheid was but a culmination of the work started by the British. And now with neocolonialism Britain has a chokehold on the economy betraying democracy in the way it betrayed apartheid when it ceased to serve its business interests.

The focus on Verwoerd as the "architect of apartheid" is correct. I went with my dad to events where Verwoerd was the speaker as a child. He was a master communicator and very definitely in the years after South Africa became a Republic managed to mould Afrikaner Nationalism to a point where support for apartheid policies was not questioned. But, there is another dimension that is always left out in addressing "apartheid", this was the process of establishing the belief system on which Verwoerd and specifically with Malan's input, built the principles and values to justify what we came to know as the apartheid system. This is why South Africa is stuck in so much of what apartheid expressed amongst all race groups and until this is addressed a few generations will continue to carry it with them. You mentioned something about it (42:00), but I believe it is founded in opposing and sometimes tainted worldviews.

Dr. Joy DeGruy did a study on generational trauma still existent till today among black Americans. She shows how this trauma has developed into certain behaviors that are prevalent in the black community and are labeled as "laziness", "promiscuity", "unintelligent", and other vile labels. She shows how that even though slavery ended the trauma continued as oppression of black people continued through other creative means. She argues that it is not a mistake that black people world wide have certain similar behaviors which have been labeled in all manner of vile labels, but is actually the result of untreated trauma which still lingers among black people. The likes of Verwoerd are responsible for serious generational trauma which we still are struggling with today. It will take many generations to undo the damage Verwoerd has done, but fight on - we must. Dr. DeGruy also argues that the fact that black people have endured all this trauma and are still standing speaks to the resilience, intelligence, and strength we surely have. We are still being systematically oppressed in South Africa and we must continue to fight for the total liberation of black people.

That's why so many South Africans of so many races love that town. There is nothing wrong with wanting to preserve culture. Some people believe that the preservation of culture does need a frontier or border. What is important in life is to critism how wrongly or rightly things are implemented so that you don't repeat that. You can not uproot ideologies because ideologies come from deep beliefs.
