This sounds like myself and my older brother. My Mother was rushed to the hospital and I called him and told him he said she'll be alright. She died 12 hours later. I've taken care of the arraignments while he stayed at home whining about having a full plate. He died about a year and half later. Of the siblings I was the only one who had shown up for his funeral.

They told my brother I would get any money and the house, but my father had some dementia and never changed the will. I had to pay my brother $94,000. He said he didn't remember what they told him.

In the States there are certain debts that are handed down with the estate. Normally that's settled by seizing part of the deceased estate, whether it's physical or financial property. I've seen entire estates wiped out because of medical bills for their deceased parent before... and it's possibly one of the most disgusting practices I've seen here. In fact, some hospitals still send out a final bill for a lost family member, even after their death. If there's no money in the estate they sometimes will be allowed to charge surviving family members who have any financial obligation to the deceased. It's... ridiculous.. but it still happens. If I'm correct, the majority of debt is eliminated with the death of a person, but there are some debts that can linger. Which specific ones often depend on the State.

Some people have a hard time dealing with seeing their parents in the hospital sick/dying. They really can't handle it emotionally or mentally. This guy is just a jerk. He wasn't deprived of love. I'm not going to deny he felt some kind of way when he lost his mother at a young age, but he's not the only one. His sister lost her mom too. What I don't understand is why he has such hatred for his father. Not all parents take the kids on vacation. No, not everyone becomes a rebel without a cause. Arnold is not grateful for anything his father did for him. She actually told him about the money. What does being your sister have to do with paperwork? He can do his own paperwork or his wife can do it. Arnold needs to realize that HE was the reason his relationship with his father wasn't good. Arnold is making excuse after excuse. He even married a woman as heartless as him No, Arnold didn't say Ruby is the only family he has. Does Arnold not consider his wife family? I guess not because only people who give money and clean up his mess is family.

Ugh, whatever. My brother tried that "My father wasn't around when I was little, that's why I'm like this!" once. Unfortunately for him I was there, (plus I'm younger) and I replied "He wasn't there for me either, stupid, but I'm not a whiny little b*tch like SOME people!" He didn't appreciate that (hehe) but he had no rebuttal! Our mom raised us and was amazing, and dad started coming around in our mid/late teens (that's another story! Lol) He (brother) was just an idiot who made stupid choices but blamed everyone else for the bad outcomes.

Your POV is valid. The POV of the guy in the story however is WAY out of line. It isn't like the guy was abusive or like in your case rejecting. He just wasn't as warm and cuddly as this guy wanted. You don't insult a guy buy giving spare change at his funeral. I don't think I could bring myself to do something like that to someone I hated.

Obviously not an American story. Sure the estate can have debt. Debts are paid from the assets left by the estate. If the assets don’t cover the debts, that’s it. The only way personal debt can be passed down is if someone claims it on behalf of the estate. The exception is if the debt is held mutually by the person who died along with another party as in a mortgage or loan. Whatever assets left in the estate can go towards the debt, but the balance, if any, will belong to the surviving party. This is common in business partnerships. That is why those business buy something called key man insurance. It is paid by the business and is considered a business expense and deductible on taxes.
