I mainly take a lot of handwritten notes with my iPad and Apple Pencil, and the one thing I never see mention in any Apple Notes videos is how the writing is more laggy the longer you write. It’s been like that for years now and Apple hasn’t fix it yet

An easy workaround to export notes to PDF is select the note that you want to export to PDF and in the share options, select open with pages and from there you can export to PDF natively and without any third party applications, its handy at times.

What does "Markdown support" mean, in this context? It's fundamentally a rich text-based application. Do you just want to be able to use markdown-esque syntax e.g. * asterisks * for italics, # Headings, etc? If so, there are third party applications that let you do this, at least on Mac (e.g. ProNotes).

There is a free ‚plugin/ app‘ called ProNotes that adds the most Markdown shortcuts to Apple Notes. The only sad thing is it just works on Mac.

Technically Apple note does support markdown, to do that you can just select that you’re note and then drag and drop to your file and yeah that easy

I think putting ai as a plus is a moot point because 1) it's not here 2) it's not gonna be here for a while 3) when it comes out, we're still gonna wait a while for all features to roll out (i.e. writing tools will come out before new siri) 4) when it comes out, it's only gonna be for a selected market for who knows how long. So yeah... in theory, when all the stars align, apple notes will be super integrated with ai and writing tools and whatnot, but right now - and even for the coming months - the weight this integration has in anybody's decision to use apple notes should be minimal to nonexistent, from my point of view

Siri 2.0 should be coming in 16.3 so about December/January if i'm not mistaken, it's really not too far off, and it's not "only for a select market" it's available everywhere except china and the EU, as long as the language is set to English, and by the time Siri 2.0 comes out more languages should be available too, again, if I'm not mistaken. I do agree somewhat with your point, however, I do think it's important to point these features out even though they're only coming in the next few months rather than completely neglect them until they're shipped, since with this info someone can make a better informed decision on what they should use

The best way to export notes from Apple Notes into Markdown with the most features like attachments and even links between notes is the "Importer"-Extension from Obsidian. Really, that thing is awesome.

Been trying to understand Obsidian better so I can better use it for my blog and writing when I found your channel. I'm glad you have a video like this as it helped me realize that I want to take some of my personal notes out of my Obsidian vault and put them in Apple Notes and I should be able to do what I need it to do. The biggest part of it is my notes for playing role playing games that I want to move out of my vault and into notes. This is helping me see that it is powerful enough to handle this which will take pressure off of dataview in my vault while keeping my RPG notes organized. I say this as I use obsidian on my iPad mini to take notes on presentations I attend and the stress of the RPG stuff has caused the app to crash at times usually when creating titles.

same, used Google Docs for 3 years, then MS OneNote during 6 months, then wasted hours on Notion, and later discovered Obsidian, everyone says that it's hard to use but it's honestly the easiest one that I've used so far after 8 years of note taking, there is not many things that we can do in obsidian by default so it's really straight to the point of writing. After some time I customed a bit the experience with some really useful plugins without changing the simplicity of the program. I've also really recently configured a synchronisation and backup between my iPad, iPhone and PC vaults with a plugin called Remotely Save and my NAS, it was really the last thing that was missing to get the best notetaking experience between all my devices.

I'm still looking for a Notes solution to casually share notes with a friend, like planning for an upcoming trip and such, where they might not know or want to install another app like Obsidian. So far I found Apple Notes the best solution for sharing notes, but I am looking for alternatives.

I'm not a notes fanboy, but here are a couple of reactions to some points you raise. - some git like version control would be nice - I don't fully understand your export problem. On your iPhone you can mail a copy, just make a copy or open a copy in Pages (and export from there to for instance pdf). - and notes can be shared to collaborate with others.

Good video, thanks. One Notes 'missing feature' that drives me crazy is the inability to see the folder path of a specific note... I have thousands of notes and often they are in multi-layer nested folders. Search will often help me find a particular note, but what often I really want is the FOLDER that the note is contained in. Something like how ⌘i will show the path in finder. I can move a note to a new folder, but strangely there is no way to see what folder it is currently in....

The only bad thing about apple notes is the lack of date editing or even when you share a note on AIRDROP it dosnt transfer the creation or edit date with the note hence it shows the date of creation as the airdrop date GARBAGE

Apple notes: After update the heating issue is mostly resolved but there few new issues now. 1. The auto refining of figures is working fine usually but not working properly in pdfs. This is happening due to zooming in in the pdf (as similar is happening with freeform when zoomed in) 2. Blue dots appear and disappear constantly while I write (handwritten) in pdfs. This is happening due to the spell check feature. But I don't know how to switch it off. Need help regarding this!

What are you saying! I have iPad 11 pro M4 and after having iOS 18 update it’s crazily heating within 5 min of using. Even the pdf editor and Freeform also I guess.

I'm surprised you had a problem with exporting from Apple Notes because I did that years ago, and everything exported perfectly. I'm guessing the proprietary format changed with these new features and broke exporters that were working perfectly. Considering SQLite is still a standard open database format, I'm hopeful that these tools will also be updated and corrected. Obviously Apple should have an export feature, but they don't want anyone leaving the walled garden. Unfortunately, that's the primary reason I will not be taking advantage of any of this. I escaped once, I will not go back without an escape option always available.

Apple notes is terrible for taking lecture notes, and the main issue is its unintuitive UI and the way it organise the notes along with weird bugs where it starts forcing you to type while the pencil option is selected

Sounds like you had the scribble pen selected in the toolbar (the pen with the letter A.) That’s the feature that allows you to convert handwritten texts to typed texts (you can do that anywhere in the system btw it’s not a bug.) Just use any other pen tools that doesn’t have the letter A and that should fix your issue.

@@HarryDinh-A No that is not the case, this usually happen when i use lasso to select handwritten text and when i try to paste that text below on the empty part of the page, it somehow opens keyboard. Anyway apple notes heats up my ipad too much so i stopped using it

The meme at the beginning is SO true. I'm not confident I'm going to keep my iphone long term, I may go back to android in the future, however I already have a mac, and can't find a notes app that has everything I want and seamlessly transfers across devices. Although I definitely agree that Obsidian is even better than apple notes and is cross compatible, however you have to pay to access your notes across devices, which is stupid for a note taking app. I would go back to Obsidian in an instant if I didn't have to pay.

I am going to stick with Obsidian because it stores files as markdown files, not a proprietary format, and because I need cross platform compatbility. But I do use Apple notes for very quick notes, and it's much better for that than is Obsidian.

Great stuff. Can you elaborate on the transcribe function? 1. Does it work on audio notes you have imported from voice memos? 2. The only thing that I don't agree with and you have put it as the first good thing is " searching for a word " , According to my experience of using Note extensively and every day for many good other things, but the moment I am 100% sure I wrote about something and I try to find it by typing the word at the search spot. It never come up, i get unreliable results. So I doubt my self, does the spelling wrong either in the notes or what i just typed .... Then I try to remember where and when by myself and go search manually in all the data ... and guess what, my spelling in bot was 100% right, but Notes can't find it and it gives me things that don't have any link with the word I typed

@@whatisiswhatable It's like Apple Notes, but for all devices. Including Android, iOS, Mac and Windows. But here's the kicker... Unlike Notion, It's local first. And it's not using the data encryption technology that Apple uses for Apple notes in order to keep you in the eco system. It's fast, reliable and my favourite part is that it can be used offline 100% and syncs with all your devices when you're online. No syncing issues whatsoever like Notion. The bonus is... It has a graph view just like Obsidian. The only cons is that, it's bad at databases. So I've separated my work as follows: For PKM I use Anytype and for my Business Databases I use Notion.

One big reason to not use apple notes is that you only can use it in the apple ecosystem and that is very expansive. I think Apple products are great, but iam not willing to pay the costs anymore. That said: Compared to Apple Notes Google Keep or Google Notes is complete and utter garbage. Update: i should watch the comlete video first, before i comment 😂. You mentioned all the bad stuff. File and future-proofnes before function. I rather don't have these really amazing functions but be the real owner of my data.

This is the main reason I use obsidian. I used to use notion until one day their servers went down in the middle of an online lesson. From then onwards I made a resolution all my notes had to be locally stored and accessed, and never looked back since.

Good video. I have a workaround for your problem of notes getting deleted. It’s called screen memory. It takes screen shots of what you are doing at set intervals. You can choose which apps it works for and doesn’t. It’s been game changing for me.

Google is okay but it’s all online and it’s still pretty minimal, doesn’t have any good mobile apps apart from the generic doc/prezi/sheets apps just like Microsoft office. BAD ADVICE. You use APPLE NOTES, you are "S T U C K" with it. Try to export multiple notes from APPLE NOTES, try to work with the documents, like merging documents, or anything like that. Not possible to access the files, like md-files. You can ONLY do, what APPLE allows you to do. It is "ROTTON". Good for simple notes. Very bad to use as a longterm vault. I stay with OBSIDIAN. Just because it's "open" to anything, I want to do with my information later.
