What a lovely apple pie. When I was growing up, the orchards in our region produced Macintosh apples so that’s what my Mom used. The apples in the pie were cooked through, no apples with a “bite” in our pies. This of course, goes against all pie baking wisdom to use eating apples instead of cooking apples. Your pie looks like a great combo for baking especially with the addition of corn starch and the ingredients on the bottom crust.

Hi Sue Shannon. Thanks very much. I usually would use Bramley apples, which are the most commonly used cooking apple in the UK. They are perfect for pies. But since I didn't have any but had my favourite 'eaters' I decided to use those. I have used Braeburns for baking before so I knew they would be good. I have never tried McIntosh, which is read originates from Canada. If I ever get over there again I shall have to try them.

Although eaten in Europe since long before the European colonization of the Americas, apple pie as used in the phrase "as American as apple pie" describes something as being "typically American". In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, apple pie became a symbol of American prosperity and national pride. By the late 14th century, apple tarts and pies were a common delicacy in England -- albeit, they were quite different than modern pies. Due to the scarcity and high cost of sugar (which cost two shillings per pound, or about US$50 per pound in 2014 dollars) in today's prices), English apple pies did not contain crust, and were instead served in “coffins”, or inedible pans made from natural ingredients. Thanks for the video.
@geoffsbakingblog4 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. I believe that Europeans actually introduced apple trees to the Americas too.
@brucebowen1004 жыл бұрын
@@geoffsbakingblog Apples were introduced to North America by colonists in the 17th century, and the first apple orchard on the North American continent was planted in Boston by Reverend William Blaxton in 1625. The only apples native to North America are crab apples, which were once called "common apples".

Oh Geoff. It's a first. You've disappointed me. Didn't you know that it's against the law to make an apple pie using any apples other than English Bramleys? Tut tut.
@geoffsbakingblog4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nees, I have always been a bit of a rebel, LOL. I do like a Bramley apple pie, though they aren't really Bramley's at all. He simply bought the house where a girl and planted some seeds that grew into those apples. When a local wanted to take cuttings and grown them on to sell the apples the new owner agreed provided they were sold as Bramley's which was his name, apparently.
