They work even better IMO with 2 T75's on top with 2 V30's on bottom since the V30's are louder (not just higher sensitivity, but louder than most 100db speakers because of the aggressive upper mids).

I just picked up an EVH 80W Iconic head to go with my Marshall 1960A 2011 cabinet with the G12-T75 speakers. I have not had a chance to crank the amp up yet as I currently live in a condo. I will be transporting my head & cab to the practice place the band I am in rehearses at and I will be cranking it up there. Since you said that the G12-T75's are lacking in mids, and also the EVH Iconic, I'm thinking about turning the mids on the amp up and maybe setting my EQ mids higher to get more of that "in your face" sound like the Vintage 30 speakers. It just might work !!! I will, get back to you once I get my amp and Marshall cab over there to let her rip !!! Great video, very informative Euge. Thanks so kindly for taking the time to talk about this. Happy shredding brother, you're a great guitar player !!!

I came to say the same: the sticker with straight corners is a giveaway that it's made in China (made in England units have round corners). So it can't be from the '90s. 12JN is the date code, 12 stands for the day, J is the month = september, N is the year = 2003. It was after the factory move in 2003. I have Greenback units from 2004 and 2009 and they beat later units, the 2004 one sounds so full and vintagey, the 2009 ones sound so smooth, round and defined. It seems there was a shift in production specs afterwards, when harsher units became notorious (why Celestion did that, nobody knows).

Excellent video, Euge! I love the Greenbacks sound (specially if it is vintage with the Pulsonic cone before 1973) and eventually blending the GBs with the G12T-75s - in a JCM 800 bias. I am glad that I found your channel. I am fairly new to the tube amp game and it's great to find someone who is willing to educate the masses and chases the same sound that I do. My base sound has always been the "No More Tears" album. Right now, my main amp is the DSL 40. I've been able to get my sound for the most part with the stock speaker. I do have an EQ in the loop as well which might be doing more than I give it credit for. The Crunch channel with the SD-1 is pretty stout and is a fairly decent clone of the 800 sound. Anyways, a lot of people crap on the stock speaker, but I can't find a replacement that would give me a better sound with just the one speaker as the Celestion line up seems to need a combination to hit all the frequencies that our ears want to hear. I ask myself if would be better off just keeping the stock speaker or getting the T-75 and redo my EQ like you did? I ask this also, would it be a worthy (and fun) idea to try to get another DSL 40 and pair it with my Chorus Ensemble pedal in Stereo like Zakk Wylde, but with a V30 in one and the T75 in the other?
@levipartridge2790
@levipartridge2790 25 күн бұрын
an idea you could do to save money (edit*depending if your DSL is the later model with the V-Type, or the older model with the seventy-80 speaker) is trying the T-75 alongside the stock V-Type in the other. In the room where you can't balance their levels, the V-Type is a quieter speaker than the V30 (97dB vs 100dB), the same as the T-75 (97dB) so if you wanted more of the T-75 character to come through, that might do a better job at that. I haven't had the chance to test this myself as I don't have a 2x12, but could be an experiment worth doing.

I think a lot of people would agree T75s sound great in the room/live, but I've never had a single issue RECORDING with them. Absolutely one of my favorite speakers in that context...they give a certain "air" and liveness to a mic'ed tone and don't sound like a disembodied speaker. It's a very synergistic sound between the speaker and the cab itself. When I had my Uberschall/Uberkab, my prevailing thought when recording that setup was that the T75 was THE speaker doing the heavy-lifting with that amp, without question. They translate the bottom end that amp has to a T, pun intended. They give you the "snap", the articulation/attack and they don't sound honky. Better still, they're a 40+ year old speaker and STILL sound modern. Yes, the highs extend a bit, but most modern amps are plenty capable of dialing it back while still giving you the pick attack heavy guitars need. I'll defend T75s 'til I'm dead and buried!

I'd bet an Eminence Swamp Thang and Creamback would work excellent together? They're both very distinct and have minimal overlapping frequencies. Together they'd crush all other pairings I can think of. Put 2 Eminence on the bottom, and 2 Creambacks up top, in a 412. That'd be the ultimate do anything cab of death! It's a project for a KZbin video, that would get massive attention. Euge is the guy for the job. Kick'n ass on the speaker content. Thanx for all the work buddy. Gets people thinking.

Great comparison thanks. That sounds so massive: T75+V30 is the winner based on my ears. Actually if I remember well Leon Todd's free IR (that I use a lot) is actually a Marshall cab with mix of V30 + T75. Now I know why I like that IR. I only play 1x12 at home (loud basement ;-) and I like quite a bit the T75 on its own as it gives a deeper bass on a small cab whixh is pleasing when playing for myself ;-)

Marshall has always paired those with their heads because it rounds out all of that Marshall mid range and it's very easy to dial up the mid range and balance it out which is also why they would always use the vintage 30 in the jubilee cabs because the jubilee was a lot darker of an amplifier. Combined, they are great and complement each other great also a K 100 or a K 85. And the old old school marshals yes they love the greenbacks or the cream backs but I do feel like an 800 with a good cabinet with those two blended is just solid awesomeness.

Wow. That chugging tone at 7:46 is amazing. This did not turn out how I thought it would. In many amp sim plugins I use, the G12-T75 is usually very bright and seems better for lead guitar and melodies. I often have to dial in some room or put a 57 off axis to soften the highs. In the plugins, the V30s and Greenbacks seem better for rhythm guitars because they are less harsh. But here the results were the opposite: the G12-T75 was scooped and the V30 was a bit harsh. I wish I could experiment with cabinets more in person but they are expensive and heavy. There are also so many variables: how the cabinets are built, when the speakers were made, and how they are wired in the cabinet. I do know 20 years ago when I was young I liked a big scooped Mesa sound. I did not like the Marshall DSL/TSL 2000s when they came out because I thought Marshalls in general lacked gain and distortion. But now in my 40s I now prefer a boosted Marshall sound with a slight scoop like what you have here. I grew up listening to a boosted JCM800/900 sound in the 80s and now I have returned to that amp instead of chasing 5150s and Bogners, Engls, Diezels, and other high gain boutique amps. I should have been putting a pedal in front of a Marshall the whole time. Listening to real cabs in a room I have heard a Marshall 1960B (not sure about the speakers--around 2010 or so) and a Mesa Triple Rectifier oversized cab. I liked the Marshall much more because it sounded much tighter in the lows than the Mesa cab. Thanks as always for your knowledge you share with us, Euge. 🙏

@@ClaimedEagle Thanks. I thought the baffle construction inside the cab made a difference. I thought other than build quality (some cabs are more durable than others), the wood of the cab as well as its dimensions and weight made a difference. And most of us also know open back vs. closed back can mean a great difference in sound. I thought the mics would pick up all of these details. Also, because I am ignorant as far as matching cabs and speakers up to power amps in terms of impedance and wattage (especially with solid state power amps/modelers replacing tubes), I was never really comfortable mixing speaker types/wattages for fear of damaging something. I've also seen some debate about series vs. parallel wiring in the 4x12 cabinet changing the tone. I can see how mixing different speakers would make for a better overall tone though by balancing out frequencies. I have a 4x12 Carvin MTS3200 amp and cabinet, 400 watt cab, 100 watt head, circa 2000, which I'm guessing is a clone of Marshall's 1960 cab with some kind of Carvin made British voiced 100 watt speakers. The head sounds like it is going for JCM900 territory. I also have a Randall Cyclone head and Warhead 2x15" cab which is crazy rugged but massively heavy. The Randall just does solid state mid scooped high gain stuff--the only thing Randalls seem to do. Having a parametric mid and graphic EQ on that head is nice though. I browsed Marshall's page looking at their new cab offerings because I was considering a guitar cab vs. FRFS speakers for a modeling preamp like an Axe FX, Kemper, and Seymour Duncan Power Stage. Most of the current Marshall cabs on offer seem to be much lower wattages than cabs from the 80s-00s, although I realize we are now getting away from 100+ watt tube amps. My Randall Cyclone actually does 300 watts so finding cabs that can handle amps like that or higher wattage power amps seems to be a challenge. I'm aware that doubling wattage only makes about 3 db volume difference, but I would rather have higher wattage speakers so the power amp can be turned up safely. Thanks.

@@ClaimedEagle I would also think cab construction only mattering in the room would mean impulse response differences from cab to cab would be meaningless. If a mic only picks up speaker tolerance as a variable, then IR capture wouldn't pick up all the nuances of each cabinet/speaker/mic/space combination. That said all an impulse response is really is an EQ curve at a late stage in the signal chain. We just get that curve through cabs/speakers/mics/rooms.

Just from the side by side comparison. To me, the T75 has more definition in the notes and a well round bottom end. While the V30 is more open and brighter in general, Yet loses a hint of the definition in the notes. I wonder if mixing the two would be like putting a JCM800 and a dual rectifier together to get definition in the notes and a thick well round low end punch.

The T75's are a bit bright and spiky with a 57, IMO, and adjusting the mic has too much mid range fall off, and it gets too dark too fast. That said, doing a fredman technique with a 57 or on a V30 and a 421 or 58 off axis on the T75, the two complement each other nicely, filling out. Also, if you record it with a ribbon or an e906 or e609, it sounds fine by itself if you adjust the amp's EQ. So, in all fairness, you made the right choice, microphone wise.

Hi! I have a Line 6 Spider II 212 which has two Celestion C12P-80 (I see they are also called Seventy-80s) and I'm considering making a cabinet with them. Do you think it would be worth it? For a moment I thought they were the same featured in this video but no, it's a different model number.

I have a Marshall MG cab. I didn't spend much on it. I play a Valvestate through them. I doesn't sound bad, but it don't like how it sounds micd up. would it be worth it to try some G12s in it or should I just be satisfied with it and move on?... In your opinion. Thanks!

I've got 9 1960 cabs at work with G12t-75 speakers.. if you use a 57 on them they sound like an vacuum cleaner on high gain sounds it's better with a JCM but with my Recto it's pure vacuum cleaner. This did absolutely not change my mind either 🤣

With all my love and respect this tone is over saturated (for me). I can tell some difference in the mids more than anything. Anyway my fave are V30s maybe V30s - Greens X pattern. I have a dry signal out of 77 jmp though. For me that's when you can hear an "open" sound and of course it's not easy to play. Nonetheless it's another interesting video from you, keep it up mate. 💪

I wonder what a 75 and a greenback would sound like? I have a cab each loaded with those respectively...might have to try that. I also love my 75 loaded marshall cab in the room at practice but have always hated it micd up live. There's like this weird jangly frequency in the background of everything that's just always there.

Sounds good when you play though it, but it's not quite right for me. I prefer some cone breakup like a Greenback or an Alnico Blue. I find the T75 very sterile, more like a hi-fi speaker. Yngwie certainly made them sound good, he discusses his speaker preference in his autobiography, he doesn't want the speaker to colour the sound.

T75 is the Metallica tone in RtL & MoP. I'm not sure what they used in KeA; AJFA was a frankenamp with marshall mesa and whatnot plugged together (though I'm pretty sure they were still using 75s); Black Album was Mark IIC+ through V30s. But if someone wants to replicate the Ride/Master sound, they can't do it without T75s. To me, they sound too spiky on their own, but they mix really well with Marshall Vintages.

After hearing the first playback @7:54, the T-75s are much brighter sounding and fuller. The V30s sound flat, like they’re missing the presence frequencies around 2.5 kHz. I verified this with a spectrum analyzer. On the recording, the T-75s were more pleasant sounding and would probably cut through a mix better because of the presence bump. The V30s sound dull in comparison. That’s my opinion. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
