I'm glad to see someone who felt similarly to me about Jade City! It felt like everyone else just totally loved it and I didn't. I liked it! And definitely want to read more but wasn't *totally* in love

Everyone who read Fireborne and the sequel seems to love it (except Jashana if I'm not mistaken), even people who normally don't read YA. I think I need to pick it up ASAP because it sounds like something I would love as well.

Hearing you talk about Malice is funny because you aren't exactly wrong, I just really enjoyed those things. It's kind of like The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton in terms of the dresses and the drama. I did love the book and there are a lot of big twists toward the end of the book. As a character, she ends up reminding me a lot of Xifeng from Forest of a Thousand Lanterns.

Oh that's good to know about the Belles because I've been tempted to read that one! Makes me think that might not be for me either... We'll see 😊I still haven't read forest of a thousand lanterns but I need to!!

I've heard mixed things about Malice. I think I'll give it a miss since I don't think I would enjoy the twist of a romance involving the villain. I'm dying to read Jade City! I need the third book to hurry up and come out so I can finally start the series.

Weeeee Jade City!!!! I didn't loooove it as much as everyone else seemed to either. But Jade War?! LOVED I read an e-arc of Master of Djinn and I didn't looooove it, but I really like the world so much and I still think I'll continue with the series. Hoping maybe it was just a slight fumble (for me) bc of being his first full length novel??

I've not read any of the books you talked about, although Jade City is on my June TBR. My favorite books in April were Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo and A Stranger in Town (book 6 in a mystery/romance series) by Kelley Armstrong.

Seems like a really good month of reading. Malice - I'm sort of interested in reading this now, BECAUSE you DNF'd it. Maybe that is the hook for the writer...for this honest review. You might have just encouraged me to read it. I've read a few Fantasy retellings, this sounds interesting. IF I read it, I'll tell you what I think. Shorefall - I've got the first book, but may wait for the third book to be published BEFORE reading it. It sounds like a large arc story, and I like to binge them. Thanks. It definitely seems to be a book series that I will enjoy. (all my friends are raving about it). Short Story by P. Djeli Clark - not a big fan of short stories...I love the build up of characters and the adventure of them, but may give this a try, for the same reason you have. Thank you. Jade City - Yeah, I get everything that you said in this review. I also gave it Four Stars, but I actually really enjoy Urban Fantasy. The character that you talked about...Yikes. Totally. Novella by P. Djeli Clark - this sounds really interesting. Hmmm. I may dip into this series too. Thank you for the recommendation. Thanks for this Wrap Up. I too have been having a great reading year. I miss our conversations. Maybe this month's Book Club is where I'll be able to talk to you. Until then, all our best.

@@BedtimeBookworm - Yeah, it seems to be right up my alley. I'm glad that you are going to continue with Jade War. I know it isn't usual for Book Clubs to do sequels, but since all of us have read Jade City, maybe in a future pick...we can pick Jade War. Just a thought. Thanks for thinking about me. I've been really sick, actually. This IG problem is not going away, and they cannot figure out the problem. New medicine, new diet, nothing seems to be working. I'm just trying to stay positive and accept the present the best that I can. I have been reading a lot, which has been nice. Again, thanks for the good thoughts. Greatly appreciated.

As you know, I DNFed Malice as well. I just wasn't feeling it.. I actually skimmed after I decided I didn't want to finish and read the end and honestly, I didn't really like that too much either.
