My favorite part of this song is at the end where the guitar riff starts with the Beatles, "Day Tripper" and then comes The Rolling Stones, "Satisfaction" and then the riff for "I Like to Rock" all layered on one another. You both picked up on the change. Lots of great songs from April Wine.

April Wine is like is just a simply good hard rock band. It's that simple. They just write good stuff. Sometimes you get gems like "Roller" or "The Sign of the Gypsy Queen" one of my faves, and then there is "Just Between You and Me". Just a great rock band that never really got their due.

Sign of the Gypsy Queen is one of those songs I never hear anymore. I consider April Wine to be another one of those transitional groups of the early 80s. "The 80's" hadn't really taken shape yet and you can hear the 70s vibe in much of their more popular songs. Shooting Star was another group like that. But once groups like Loverboy anchored in, it became "The 80s" and groups like April Wine, Shooting Star, Mannfred Mann, 707... they fell away.
@jafo321
@jafo321 2 жыл бұрын
@@kennethgoin628 I have to agree. There was a transitional period there, early 80's like 1980 to '82ish. Shooting Star did transcend later. They, like some other bands had label issues mid 80's though. There was a period of time with Shooting Star, you couldn't find an album or anything because of legal issues with their label. Then in '85 "Silent Scream" came out and had a hit on it. That entire album is good. Shooting Star always kind of reminded me of another "Kansas" type group, these were both local bands to my area. Both put out great records too. But I agree, April Wine,707 and the like just missed for some reason. I'm sure it has to do with radio air time etc. That is the funny thing with those bands vs the big hit wonders. I can sit there and enjoy an entire album from those early 80's bands front to back, there entire catalog is good. But with the big hit wonder bands, not always the case. It's like those early bands spread the wealth out over the entire album, but the big hit wonders focused all their creative energy into just a couple songs on the album. Wasn't 707 a local St. Louis band? One of my favorite songs, from Mannfred Mann was "The Runner". I think it was played in the closing credits song for "Philadelphia Experiment". I looked for that dang song for years. couldn't remember who sang it. finally happened upon it many many years later by accident. Sorry for my babbling😁.
@kennethgoin628
@kennethgoin628 2 жыл бұрын
@@jafo321 I'm unaware of 707's origins. I was unknowingly familiar with some of their songs before "discovering" the Megaforce album. It wasn't off-the-charts great but within a couple of listens, I liked all but a couple of tracks. In the following years of "who say that song?", I became more aware of who 707 was. In my market (Minneapolis/St. Paul), Silent Scream was a dud. I never heard anything from that project on the radio. I have it now and yeah, there's some great stuff on there! For me though, 1982/1983 "Hang On For Your Life" and "III Wishes" were the biggest radio projects and they came here with April Wine on their "Nature of the Beast" tour. That's why I label them as an 80's transitional group. III Wishes faded quickly but I wore out that cassette and needed a second copy. My favorite song though... is still off the first album "Last Chance". The title song has that mid-section instrumental that is nothing less than mind-blowing composition/arrangement! There's so much that went on in that '79-82 period.... Comeback projects from Peter Frampton, one-hitters like "Touch - Don't You Know What Love Is", "Axe - (Let's Have A Knock Down, Drag Out) Rock 'n Roll Party In the Street", "Tommy Tutone - 867-5309", "The Rockets - "Oh Well", "Sniff 'n The Tears - Driver's Seat", "Exile - I Wanna Kiss You All Over", "Don Felder - Heavy Metal", "Don Henly - "Dirty Laundry".... I mean... the list goes on and on for things that are unique to the period, everyone scrambling in the death of disco to figure out what the next decade would be or sound like. In retrospect, I could be knocked over with a feather had I been told in the '70s that ZZ Top would be one of the most '80s sounding bands in music history! Their "El Loco" album is completely unique to itself. It has a more 70s/roots vibe but you can hear their desire to transcend into a new decade, especially on album cuts like "Leila" and "It's So Hard". "Pearl Necklace" foreshadows their direction as well. By '83s Eliminator, there was very little of the 70s ZZ Top left. Too bad they rode that style to the end. They should've gone back to the 70s Texas blues style and fused that to each decade. They'd have maintained a very unique niche'! Okay... I'm babbling again... but I love talking about this stuff! FYI, I'll have to look through my old cassettes and see if I still have it but back in 1990, a local band from Kansas City was up in Minneapolis participating in a "best un-signed band" contest. They were like us... green! But super nice guys and we traded demos backstage.

I'd forgotten that that's the one that overlapped the riffs of Day Tripper and Satisfaction. It was in the early 80s that some DJ figured out that if you overlap the riffs of Day Tripper and Satisfaction, they don't clash at all. In fact, it doubles the awesome, like they were two halves of the same riff, the entire time. It got talked about, so some band put the overlapped riffs on one of their records, just for fun and the awesomeness of it, but I'd forgotten which band did that. Thanks for jogging my memory👍

I get what Lex is saying. Some regional groups can sound a little different from each other. For instance. Post-punk, punk, indie, alternative rock from the European countries like UK and Germany may sound different from US bands. As well as Canada. You hear it in hip hop, too, metal, new wave bands, pop music and other genres, too. Anyways. that last riff was totally Rolling Stones "Can't Get no Satisfaction" & "Day Tripper" from the Beatles. lol. It was different guitar playing style, type, amp distortions, technique, etc. April Wine was a solid hard rock band during the '70 and '80s, lots of good hits, songs. Also good music videos. Another Canadian band that is awesome is SAGA! Watch some of their videos and songs. '70s and '80s. They were hard rock but also prog rock and a little new wave (electronics, synthesizers). Similar to Styx.

NO WAY! April Wine.... One fine example of what 3 guitars can do for a song. I highly recommend checking out "Roller" by these guys. Definitely a high talent group I was privy to see one night at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff back in the early EARLY 80's They rocked the dome, I must say and can find no reason why more people aren't checking them out these days in reacting videos. So thank you very much, Brad & Lex!!

I love April Wine! Saw them way back in the early 80's with Loverboy at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. Met them after the show; they invited us to come party with them. Only time that's ever happened for me; a great group of guys!

I don’t know if Brad could have handled riding around with us in the 70’s. BIG speakers in the back dash. BIG SPEAKERS in the front. I even had speakers under the car seat. High powered car stereo with a powerful amp/equalizer that made it sound like a rolling concert. You could FEEL the music flowing through your body. You could have blood running out of your ears and somebody would say TURN IT UP. OK nobody actually had blood running out their ears but they would say turn it up. 😂

I like how Lex is rocking the Canada cap for a Canadian band. She also wore it for Loverboy. Anyway, April Wine was a very underrated band in the late Seventies/early Eighties. They could flat out rock.

Ah, the music of my youth! Lex, great choice of cap to be wearing for this Canuck band reaction. Note how the ending consists of "Day Tripper" by the Beatles over "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones.

As a patriot Canadian, it made me so happy seeing y’all react to this…. bands like April wine, Rush, Chilliwak, tragically hip etc. *REALLY* have a special place in our hearts here up north. Sort of brings everyone together :) any place you go you’ll always hear this type of stuff, wether it’s camping, having a bbq, backyard fire…every Canadian is blasting one of these bands….y’all should react to more 🤘🏻

At the end of the song: In the left ear the guitar does, the riff from, "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. In the right ear the band does the riff from, "Day Tripper" by the Beatles. Then the middle guitar continues the "I Like to Rock" riff from the song.

The sound of a band in the studio has a lot of factors. Everything from the producer, to how instruments are mic’d. When you listen to albums, you can see the progress of studio equipment through the years. Say you listen to an album by Moby Grape or The Doors from the 60’s, you can probably hear a little white noise or something that could sound lightly muffled. Then you listen to albums from even the early eighties, like Black Sabbath or Maiden and instruments sound closer and clearer. Everything in the mix sounds higher. There are a lot of factors based on new technology. So, the sound of the April Wine album is probably just the way everything was produced in that given studio. Some bands went to extremes to get sounds, like Bad Company. From what I understand, the first album was recorded in a field to get that nuanced sound. It’s pretty cool when you look into it. Now, we have “artists”recording music in the studio with no talent. There are so many studio tricks, even singing is fixed. That’s why a lot of artists today sound awful live. Look at Poison. The producer on their first album said they were the first band he had in the studio with no talent. He said they were terrible singers. Bret Michael’s had to keep repeating lines over and over, then the producer would pick the “best” one and splice it in. The rest of the band were just as bad at their instruments. So if that producer hadn’t owed his friend a favor, they might have never made it. I never liked them anyway. Lol. But, yeah it’s all about the studio and producer. Rock on🤘

She is right about the volume level. They were definitely and Arena rock band. I saw them on this album tour and then two years later on nature of the beast when it came out, which became my favorite album for a while. When it's loud this kind of music just works perfectly, especially when you feel a thumping you in the chest. On nature of the Beast, they scored two big hits with power ballads, just between you and me, and, sign of the Gypsy Queen. But there are a lot of fun songs on that album, like, I wanna rock, caught in the crossfire, and, future tense.

Hey, you two, I hope you're all well. The "old part" in the closing bars of this song was a reprise of The Rolling Stones' "I Can't Get No satisfaction" ( E Major), tho' the whole song is written in A Major. I've seen these guys several times live in Canada & Europe - never a bad performance....
