In 2018, my 11 year son begged me to take him to see a band that formed in 1969. I took him to see April Wine, along with 1000’s of other screaming fans, and we were not disappointed. Myles Goodwin, the lead guitarist, was 70 at the time, never missed a beat. The band has a picture of the crowd, and I am so proud to show off my son, at 11, standing in the front row!

Dude, You hit the nail on the head. In the 70s they didn't have all the technology and tricks to make average (sometimes poor) performers sound acceptable. Record companies were looking for talent and creativity, not the cheapest way to make a buck.

Ya know why better back then ? These guys were brought up in the 50s 60s . And were actually taught stuff in school. Like shop, music, sports. And dedicated themselfs to their craft. I seen these guys down the street from house praticing in a garage when i was 6 years old. Seen them live about 5 times in my life . And they rocked everytime better than the studio versions of the songs . Their songs are the history of my life.

@@andjustjizzforall I used to live in Australia but I did not realize they hadn't hit down there. Canada had a really good run of trios in the 70's and 80, be they bands, or bands with three guitars. Each of those bands you listed featured/s really intimidating players. Not just anyone wants to fill in with bands like that. If you're going to sit in with any of them you'd better know your stuff. And yet, despite all of the musical skill, the bands were fun on record and live. Super glad I saw all of them more than once.

April Wine had about seven or eight years under their belt when they recorded this, and were big in Canada. This was their second US hit after Could Have Been a Lady. Their biggest US hit was a slower tune, Just Between You and Me. Myles Goodwyn on vocals and guitar. The other guitarists were Brin Greenway, and, at this time, Gary Moffett. Jerry Mercer on drums. He had played in a jam band called Mashmakhan in the late 60s, who had a hit with As the Years Go By.

Refreshing to hear a young guy say “Talent. Talent”. Dudes in the guitar era had guitars and talent. No synthetic made silly machine made sound like today. I discovered April Wine with the 1981 album "Nature of the Beast", and I've never been the same. I agree the the suggestion of April Wine's "I Like To Rock". Very solid song and they skillfully sample The Rolling Stones "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" guitar riff, then blend into The Beatles' "Baby You Can Drive My Car" riff. That couldn't have been a common thing back then.

Formed back in the supergroup days, 20 years of albums, 1 a year, still touring I believe! All April Wine sings are great!!! All great musicians, great singers, very much varied songs, imagine being the drummer on this song, having to fill in all that guitar sound!😮Put that on continuous, put in the earbuds, and thoroughly trash out ur run or workouts! I'll play this song for younger guys , into rock and guitar, but typically don't know anything about the guitar gods, pre grunge days. And after this song, their faces look like they got struck by lightning! And then usually say something like," I don't even get or know nor understand what I just heard!!!"

The 70's was a great and fun decade to be in, cool muscle cars and street cruising , Disco was making the scene , and rock music was flexing its muscles. Bands like KISS , Angel , Mott The Hoople, Deep Purple , The Eagles, The Hollies, Paul McCartney and Wings, AC/DC, Areosmith, REO Speedwagon, Little River Band, Supertramp, The Guess Who, B.T.O., Elton John, Bad Finger, Rod Stewart, Doobie Brothers, Slade , Eric Clapton, Nazarath, Gary Wright, Boston,April Wine , Heart, they were all over the airways and AM Radio played the best tunes from great bands and singers all the time. If I could go back to any time, I would choose the 70's...

Dual and triple lead guitars are very rare. Except in Southern rock bands and long jam bands. The Allman Brothers, the Outlaws and Thin Lizzy were masters of this. Also, 2 drummers. Back in about 1978, during some of their live concerts had 4 lead guitars. In regard to the Allman Brothers, Duane Allman was once asked: " why do you need 2 drummers? He responded by saying. Because James Brown had 2 drummers!"

New subscriber here! 😀 Love your channel. I was 17 in 1976 and grew up with this music. April Wine was awesome. Try their ballad “Just between you and me”. Of course “Sign of the gypsy queen” is a must!
