Here is a video where I show the 15 artillery shells I found this summer in one spot. You will get to see me "cracking the crust" on some of them and discovering some very rare shells. It is not a "hunting" video as I didn't have my camera with me that weekend.

You are finding so much! I have a school classmate who has been metal detecting in the Fredericksburg Va. area for the past 40 years and started out with his dad in the White oak, Stafford Va. Area. Now they have and old school House in White Oak Va. It is known as White Oak museum and Research Center. Just an incredible museum of Union encampments from the Fredericksburg campaign. It looks like you are on your way to having your own Museum . Just a pleasure to watch your video's. Thanks again Dave

Hey Beau, the un-punched Borman fuses... Wouldn't those shells be a little on the dangerous side being they are basically dropped and un-fired? Just curious! Killer finds and simply loved the pre-cleaning beating! You got a nice haul of CS artillery there my friend!

Really interesting as always. I'm guessing maybe these were supplies captured by the Union and dumped in the river? As for Black Powder being dangerous...it is! I'm not sure how long it's chemical composition would remain viable after all these years, especially the ones which were wet inside, but back in those days powder got wet fairly frequently, and when the sun came back out, they'd spread it out on canvas or boards and dry it out. Once dried it was ready to go boom again!

Beau, my heart was in my teeth watching you whack on those shells with a mallet. I'm afraid that sometime you're going to do it with a shell that was 'field-modified' somehow WITHOUT paper in it to get the powder soggy, and WHAMMO!!! No more great videos. I'm happy that you've divested the 'enraged porcupine' look, though.

Incredible finds. You didn't film finding them? You really live in an area where there was a lot of Civil War fighting. What state did you find these in? They sure made a lot of dud shells. Just think how many more would have gotten killed if they all went off. When they light the ones with the fuse in the end, did they light the fuse in the end first, then shoot the shell. Then, perhaps when the shell landed the fuse went out when it got flatened?

So the theory is these shells were dropped, presumably in a muddy area or creek? The way they're encrusted, clearly they've been in the ground or submerged in water for quite some time. It's hard to fathom 150 years and nobody has come along and grabbed them.
@williambrown6347
@williambrown6347 8 жыл бұрын
Nobody came along and grabbed them. Most of the time they can't be seen for what they are, unless you're hunting certain types of water or the shell is laying on top of a very hard layer of solid rock. The digger spent hundreds of hours researching potential sites, then tramped through ticks, chiggers, bugs, etc. to the site he's looking for. He then wades in mud and water and probably suffers from foot issues from time to time due to staying submerged so much. He then spends tens of hours restoring each shell. If you add up all of his gas money, research hours, even hotel rooms from time to time, he could probably go to a CW show and buy them for less. The point is he busts his ass to locate them. I found my first intact shell recently, a Schenkl with perfect fuse, and it took me about 45 min. to dig it out of a shallow creek, 1 foot down in the water and another 2 feet deep through the rocks, gravel and soil. Spent probably 15 hours restoring it and it's a beauty.

Thanks Beau for the video. I'm the one that keeps asking about to handle shells, and you delivered. Thanks. Now I'm gonna ask about ones that are found out of the water or have not been soaking in a creek for the last 150 years. Handle those a bit different? Also, I wouldn't hold you liable if you could show how you drill them out? Do you do that in water, to keep sparks and heat at a minimum? Again excellent video sir.
