Therein lies the issue - no call when the Montreal player was facing the boards and Reaves checked him, causing the second Montreal player to defend his teammate. If the NHL wishes to eliminate fighting from the game they need to crack down on those hits between the numbers, which are what causes the gloves to get dropped anyway.

Because by the rules it’s not a hit from behind. If you turn at the very last second like Guhle did it’s on him if he takes it in the numbers. The rule allows leeway when the player is committed to a hit and the player receiving turns his back into the hit that late……there’s no way Reaves can change his trajectory or stop up in that situation.
