Completely agree. The Dark Angels have been served by a lot of very indifferent novels. The Luther book felt the first Dark Angels book that was written for people over the age of 14. Gav Thorpe's not my favourite w40k author (being responsible for a lot of the aforementioned tat), but credit where it's due Luther is a corker.
@poursperfectpints7 ай бұрын
I think my favorite part of this book was the Lion when they're walking up into the tower. He talks about sympathizing with the beasts because they're all unique, and as such they're all alone. And that killing them is a mercy. I wasn't expecting the Lion to come off as wishing for death. But he comes out of the forest, only to find that among his own kind he's still alone. It's incredibly sad. And not having anyone else to really open up to, being unable to share his thoughts with anyone who would understand... It really makes sense that he's so aloof. I genuinely felt bad for him.

Not sure you can get more Arthurian than questing beasts and an order of knights notionally equal. Maybe I'm too much of a Lion apologist but my reading of Luther's exile (particularly after reading later Dank Angel books) was that he (like lancelot) the Lion's most trusted lieutenant and after seeing what chaos can do to a planet and narrowly avoiding assassination, sending him home with a contingent of grizzled veterans to look after the future of Caliban is the most sensible thing to do

You know, I just came up with this realization as I messaged my friend complaining about this. It actually makes sense on multiple levels that the weird maybe bad maybe good world spirit of Caliban is called Ouroboros, a serpent eating itself. Because doesn't that really describe the entire Dark Angels legion? But then, like, doesn't that describe the ENTIRE DARK ANGELS PLOTLINE? It's always moving forward but always moving backwards and always eating itself it is INSANE. I really feel like just summing up their stuff in bullet points and skipping a lot of it would not result in the reader missing much. I actually really did like the world of Caliban pre-Legion. It was such a weird and interesting place to visit, I love how they took the Dark Forest and Knights theme and just ran with it. Look out for Nemiel to return in book 11, Fallen Angels, and then a real sudden apperance in book 20, The Primarchs, in one of the short stories there!

I finally took the plunge into the Horus Heresy when there was a big Audible sale, and it's really nice having these to come to after finishing a listen. My comprehension/plot retention is automatically going to be less than if I had read, so it's nice being reminded of things I forgot as well. I went into this knowing that this one was often disliked or skipped, so with my expectations tempered, I had a pretty good time overall. It was kind of like a palate cleanser after Fulgrim and before Legion. Zahariel's journey felt a bit more personal than the multiple narratives we've had before, and I like the spooky woods bits and monsters. However I am pretty new to 40k still and didn't really know anything about the Dark Angels so a lot of the things that would be obvious to DA players were still a mystery, but I do get how this would work better already having read about them. Having now finished this and Fallen Angels, I can say that while these aren't at the levels of the preceding novels, I ended up a lot more interested in the 1st Legion as a whole. Is there a point where you'll diverge from the release order of the HH series in order to follow a narrative, or will you keep going as is? Also regarding the Lion on a horse, I'm reminded of giant Radahn and his normal sized horse from Elden Ring, worth a look if you're not familiar.

I wouldn't say the Dark Angels and Caliban sharing the same naming culture is an oversight. Caliban is where Lion El Johnson was placed into by the warp and it was very specific about it. If the warp was pure random, he and all the other Primarchs should have been dropped on the much more common uninhabitable planets like Venus and Pluto and immediately died. Caliban is the chosen home world of the Dark Angels and they are very similar and it's not random or a coincidence, it was meant to be.

I didn't massively enjoy this one, but I did get into the story of Zahariel and Nemiel and the irony of the more loyal one ending up on Caliban with the 'traitors' and the one who'd joined the plot against the Emperor staying with the Lion. I liked how they changed and developed in their respective stories and was looking forward to what seemed like an inevitable reunion at the end of the Heresy. And then Lionel happened...

This book’s portrayal of imperial arrival to Caliban really contradicts some of the other primarch’s homeworlds. I mean, there's Knight Houses that have tournies including jousting. In specialised metal armor. I think Admantine armor. I do think there's probably giant horses out there in space that can carry a primarch. They may have like 3 toes though, because regular horses are like balancing on the equivalent of the big toe, and prone to hurting themselves because balancing on one toe is bad design, much like the human spine. Normal horses can get up to 21 hands high. I'm sure also with crossbreeding with high gravity world horses for solidness, maybe megafauna horse types too, you could get horses capable of supporting primarchs, maybe even the Emperor. And I think Space Marines on horses would be interesting. Warhorses are also a weapon in a knight's arsenal, not just a mode of transport. Motorbikes can run over someone, but they can't crush heads with hooves the size of dinner plates (and that's the hoof size of like 18+ hand tall horses, if you had like 35 hand high horses, they're probably 3ft/1m per hoof).

One of the tragedies of the Dark Angels is how Lion sent Luther back to Caliban. If he had tact, Lion would have declared that he was sending Luther back because he's the best instructor the legion has, having trained Lion himself, and legionaries trained by Luther would earn greater glories. If Lion could have made it out to be an honour, Luther might not have turned on him and Caliban would still be intact.

I've always enjoyed this one oddly enough. I know it's a bit hated by the fandom, but I LOVE seeing this side of the Lion. His humanity that is unshown anywhere else in the series. His ambition, his pride, his loneliness, his want to connect to the people he is around with.
