I've literally never, and I mean never, watched a more thorough review of a garment. I've been ultralight backpacking for about 6 years and shells and pack fabric are my thing, and I've never seen a more in-depth review of a midlayer garment. 10/10 job.

Bought the 2.1 jacket last autumn based on your review. This jacket is probably the most comfortable jacket i have ever owned. i personally can use this jacket from +10c down to -10c with a light mid layer or a hoodie. In northern Europe i can say that this is perfect for the climate we have. If i had to critique the jacket for one thing that would be that i would have preferred the both sides of the front pockets to fully lined with something warm not just the front. this is a great jacket for basically anything. hard athletics, a mid layer for extreme cold or just a everyday fall / winter jacket. bonus points for the fleece on the sides

It is such a shame that they’ve restricted the LEAF line but not carried over many of the features to their regular line, especially when know it comes to hoods. The stowable hood feature of the LEAF Alpha jacket would be amazing to have as an option.

Great review. Subbed. One question: I have a 2016 Proton LT. Do you know if the new Proton LT is substantially different? Also, how does the Proton comapares to the Atom LT LEAF? I live is Seattle, Washington (for weather context). Thanks in advance!
@weekendgearguide
@weekendgearguide Жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching! The new Proton LT is very similar in warmth to the 2016 Proton LT, but uses 80gsm of Coreloft Compact Insulation which is pre-compressed by 50% while losing only 10% in warmth, while the 2016 Proton LT uses 65gsm of Coreloft Continuous which although is less gsm, it has more loft and therefore equal warmth to 80gsm of Coreloft Compact. The other difference is, for the same size, the new Proton LT is a bit longer. The Proton LT, both new and old, are warmer than the LEAF Atom LT Gen 2, as shown in my warmth comparison videos, shown here for regular Arc'teryx kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnvXamuNp6yBqac and here for LEAF and Professional Arc'teryx kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXvUi2SQaa9npZI mainly because the side panels on the LEAF Atom LT Gen 2 sacrifice warmth for the sake of breathability. Hood on the Proton LT is also bigger, due to being helmet compatible. Cheers!

Thanks for watching and glad you like the review. Generally speaking Arc'teryx shells are typically designed and sized to fit over mid-layers of the same size. However, I have used medium sized slim fitted Proton FL and Proton LT Hoody's under small sized regular fitted older generation Alpha Hardshells. That said, I believe the LEAF Alpha LT Gen 2 is still using the older generation sizing and is regular fit, so there is a very good chance your medium LEAF Atom LT Hoody Gen 2 will still fit comfortably under a size small LEAF Alpha LT Gen 2. Let me know how it works out for you. Cheers!

Great review thanks! Which would you pick as the best choice for active insulation for climbing/mountaineering between the leaf atom LT & the proton LT? (Prefer under helmet hood on this type of jacket) Thank you!
@weekendgearguide
@weekendgearguide 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! For climbing/mountaineering, I would go for the Proton LT due to the longer hem, a bit warmer and preference for helmet compatible hood for this type of activity. Of course the LEAF Atom LT will also work well, since the hood fits very well under helmets such as BD Vision MIPS, BD Vector and Salomon MTN Lab. It all comes down to preference. Keep in mind that depending on how long your torso is, the harness may ride up over the LEAF Atom LT shorter front hem, but I have not had that happen to me in my limited time climbing with the LEAF Atom LT.

@@weekendgearguide thank you so much! I’ve got the version one standard atom with coreloft at the moment which has been a great jacket but has lost a lot of loft (mainly due to me doing silly things like driving in it!). I’m thinking that a good combo could be: a. Atom LT leaf for everyday use B. Proton LT for mountain use Best of both worlds and should help to extend the life of the proton’s coreloft compact by using it less often, whereas the Atom should be good for being abused a bit more. Do you have any thoughts on Arc switching the proton insulation from coreloft continuous to coreloft compact? Seems like a step backwards or maybe they are trading some durability for improved functionality weight/bulk wise? Just wondering if it could be worth trying to pick up the previous generation proton? Thanks again!
@weekendgearguide
@weekendgearguide 3 жыл бұрын
@@27johnny You're welcome! Regarding your LEAF Atom LT + Proton LT combo, that is exactly what I'm currently doing and is truly the best of both worlds. Even better if you are able to get them on sale! As to why Arc'teryx switched from Coreloft Continuous to Coreloft Compact, is most likely due to maintain thermal warmth with usage and compression over a longer period of time, by using already compressed 80gsm of insulation vs 60gsm of uncompressed insulation. You can see that the 80gsm of Coreloft Compact in the Proton LT has about the same thermal CLO as 65gsm of Coreloft Continuous used in the Nuclei FL (same as older Proton LT). kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2G2pHWHfc2XfK8 But as mentioned, this CLO/warmth will be retained for a longer period of time with Coreloft Compact. If you can find a good deal with the previous Proton LT and it's limited to climbing and mountaineering, then it's worth considering, since the LEAF Atom LT would be used for everyday anyways.

Did you look into the TAD Equilibrium?
@weekendgearguide
@weekendgearguide 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. Thanks for the question. I have not looked into the TAD Equilibrium, but it looks to be similar to the Arc'teryx Practitioner Hoody and older version of the Arc'teryx Argus Jacket, both of which use 88g/m2 of Polartec Alpha; while thee TAD Equilibrium use 80g/m2 of Polartec Alpha. While Polartec Alpha has good breathability, I think Climashield Combat used in the Arc'teryx LEAF Atom LT Hoody Gen2 offers same level of breathability but with better warmth and is lighter and more compressible.

Thanks for watching and the question. While there is an inner loop inside the hood that can be used to connect to the external hood adjuster at the back of the hood when rolling in the hood, I find it better to roll in the hood and connect the external hood adjuster to the hanger loop with the ARC'TERYX printing at the base of the neck of the jacket. It looks cleaner and functions like a thick insulated collar. Cheers!

@@weekendgearguide Thanks for your response! I'm guessing you pull the cinch on the hood adjuster slightly so you have some extra cord to reach around the rolled-in hood. After trying your method I found I like it much better, like you mentioned it gains the additional functionality as an insulated collar. If you haven't tried it yet, I like to turn the hood inside out so it is inside the jacket and then roll it up to the top of the collar. Do you plan to make any videos on winter footwear?

Hello and thanks for the question. The 2016 Atom LT is the same as the 2018 Atom LT in this video, which is also size small, so we essentially have the same jacket but different colors. Thus, in comparison to the small LEAF Atom LT Gen 2 with respect to your question, yes the medium LEAF Atom LT Gen 2will most likely be too big in terms of arm length, front length, back length and chest area. The stomach area may fit fine or be a bit too big, but for reference, the small LEAF Atom LT Gen 2 in this review was a bit baggy for a 32"-33" waist, as shown. Hope this helps!

Hello and thanks for watching! In terms of warmth, both Proton LT and LEAF Atom LT Gen2 are almost the same, except the side fleece panels during windy days with the LEAF Atom LT Gen2, but for the most part, they are equal. Abrasion resistance is pretty much equal from my experience. The decision comes down to helmet compatible hood vs non-helmet compatible hood, long vs shorter hem and sleeve length and choice of colors and availability. Both jackets are pretty much sold out now, but the Proton LT Hoody is expected to be be restocked with new colors for the fall 2022 season, while the LEAF Atom LT Gen2 will stick to the same colors but it's not known when the common sizes will be restocked. Hello. Here are the Pros of the Gen 2 vs Gen 1: Better insulation in terms of loft retention and DWR treatment. Better breathability due to the Air Perm liner and continuous filament insulation used. A more conveniently placed External Chest pocket. As for Cons of the Gen 2 vs Gen 1: Fleece side panel does not have DWR treatment. Insulation is slightly less warm. As to whether it's worth it, I would say so, if you are able to sell your Gen 1 or maybe get a different color for the Gen 2, so you can switch between the two.

Hello and thanks for watching. Yes, they are available for purchase without being in the army at US Elite. However, it looks like some sizes and colors have sold out and are waiting for restock. www.us-elitegear.com/products/arcteryx-leaf-atom-hoody-lt-mens-2019-gen-2

@@weekendgearguide oh that’s awesome news. I have way to much orange 🍊 for hiking in hunting season. I hear good things about that vendor. I think I will order some base and mid layers. This stuff can be hard to find with limited availability. Are there restrictions on some gear ? For example specific camouflage patterns.

I actually really disliked the fact that gen 2 is now not a solid colour on the front, much prefer the pocket on the inside like gen 1. Detracts from the aesthetics

Yes, it's definitely not as clean of an aesthetics as Gen 1, but fortunately the regular Atom LT is still solid color! I don't mind it, and like the convenience and practicality of the external chest pocket for easier and quicker access to stored items, which is probably what LEAF was going for based on customer requirements.

@@weekendgearguide Yes agree, but I heard there were face fabric issues with the mainline atom LT, and overall less hard wearing than the leaf version so unfortunately that is out. I just emailed renewt to see if they would be able to modify that one panel on the gen 2 to look like all the others. Everything else about the gen2 is better, the pocket size in particular, not sure why the regular atom lt has such small pockets, can't even fit a small size iphone in there ...

@@weekendgearguide and also the only thing more military compliant is the colour, so my sgt doesn't jack me up for wearing the "wrong colour" under my uniform :D
