I cured my (mostly) flat feet by accident. I was doing exercises and balancing on one leg at a time, while doing that my foot naturally tried to curl and grasp the ground. Now I have great arches, as long as I keep doing one leg balancing exercises.

I had orthodics as a child as a "preventative", I always had issues with my feet hurting up until early 30's..now I'm barefoot most of the time, no arch supports..no issues! My son's pediatrician told me when he was a baby, to let him be barefoot as much as possible as a toddler bc it would strengthen the foot muscles naturally. She said shoes would disrupt the natural development of the foot. Have done this with all 3 kids, no problems at all with their feet.

I am a board certified Pedorthist. Not all flat feet are the same! Fallen arches means you had arches but they fell due to hormonal or other changes in your body. And flat feet in children is very different than in adults. Some low to flat feet in adults can be supported by arch supports and should be in order to help re-align the foot if their low or flat feet is due to a hyper mobile foot (extremely flexible foot) however, those that have extremely rigid low or flat feet cannot be helped and in fact can be hurt by the use of arch supports. And perhaps if caught early on could benefit from these stretches. But a hyper mobile foot will not benefit from stretches as their ligaments and tendons are already extra loose. I used to have normal arches but after pregnancy, they fell and my feet are hyper mobile, so I need and benefit from arch supports. Without them, my entire alignment is off and I suffer from knee and back pain. So in my practice I check the flexibility of the foot before I recommend arch supports.

What would you recommend for someone with flat feet plus foot drop caused by MS?

Klavical Al you need a shoe that provides motion control and has a front rocker (assists you with toe-off) so New Balance’s walking shoes with rollbar (this provides motion control).The 928 and 847 series specifically. If you have flat but flexible feet (meaning that when sitting down, or non-weight bearing, you see an arch profile but that profile is gone as soon as you stand up and put your weight on your feet) then arch supports would help as well.

Thanks for all your great wisdom Dr. Berg, I am a big fan of this youtube channel. So my story with being diagnosed with collapsed arches or fallen, I went to my Osteopath about 12 years ago and under his system he fitted me for orthotics to correct my fallen arches and the imbalance of where I was putting all my weight when I walked. And in his system he followed a protocol that teaches our body's whole alignment can be knocked off beginning with how we walk and the posture of our feet, I had knee and lower back issues before I began following his system, after 12 years I have been pain free and with the periodic adjustments and orthotic replacements every year he has kept my spine and posture in perfect alignment. I guess we all have different bodies, what works for some may not work for others, I do not feel this has worsened my arches, and I still walk barefoot when I get some time off from the matrix, with no problems. I have heard people say most tennis shoes and dress shoes are bad for the feet, but really it is not going to be possible right now to abandon all shoes, lol. Unless your Tarzan living in a jungle, lol. Thanks DOC!!!!

I had flat feet and is true arch support are useless. I found an exercise that fixed my arch, my feet hurt for two whole months but it was worth it. Take a hard cover book or a piece of wood (1.5 inches thick minimum, if you have no butt you can give it another half inch and make sure is big enough to cover both gluteous), lay down flat on the floor, legs stretch but relaxed, put the book under your buttom, make sure your hips are not in the air if you have a hip problem, lay there for 20 minutes, then take out the book, fold your knees with your feet flat on the floor for 5 minutes. I knew the words and the arches, but so what. I didn’t know the reason my shoes wear out so fast. There was no pain. At the age of 40 I was running and it hurt the bottom of my feet and I couldn’t figure it out. Then I remembered what I was told 2 decades prior. Now I wear arch supports and the pain is lessened by a lot. And, I don’t destroy shoes in 12 months. I buy them because fixing this medical condition I was born with is “elective” even though it affected job performance.

I got orthotics when I was diagnosed diabetic. I was only diabetic for a couple months because I did keto and fasting, but my feet are SO much better. I am still wearing the orthotics, but I only wear them when I leave the house. I do the stretching exercise you show, but I do it at the same time as stretching my quads (so, behind my back.) I think what's helped most is probably my resistance training with my legs, actually. My feet used to hurt a lot, but they seem much more resilient since I've been doing my quads and hams over the past year (I've been walking 30m to 2h a day for six or seven years, well before I was diagnosed diabetic and went keto.) I did develop a soft tissue hip issue about a year ago, and I've found that concentrating on the push-off with the balls of my feet and with my core torso posture seems to be helping me get past that. I stretch (yes, even before walking) now, too.

I was in a lot of pain and could barely walk, these leather and steel supports saved me and allowed me to live a normal life. I lost these arch supports and have had many of todays custom made supports which are nothing in comparison to the ones that i wore for over 30 years.

One of my biggest regrets in life is wearing orthotics! Had inner knee pain on both knees, orthotics fixed the issue immediately. I was sold. Wore them for 8 years and they wrecked my feet and ankles. Didn’t have any issues with my feet prior to wearing them. They made my feet and ankles weak… if I could go back in time would never wear them but would see a massage therapist to work out which tight muscles were giving me knee trouble… ahhh hindsight 😢

I will try those. I suffered an arch ligament reconstruction surgery 6 years ago, and even though it makes me functional (I was this close 👌 to become handicaped) from time to time my archs misbehave. 🤷♀️ So any therapeutic therapy that helps relieve the tightness on that area is more than welcome. Thanks! 💖

I don't disagree with you; however, what do you say about feet that were fine for decades and then the arches fell? What can I do?
@micsierra8064 жыл бұрын
I thought arch supports were only for people with high arches. Why would you need to support arches that are flat? They have the support they need (the ground).
@Thelittleclipstore2 жыл бұрын
Walking barefeet or very thin shoes on uneven ground is best, it’s how the feet are naturally massaged.. walking outside on grass or hiking ..

I have flat with and "Double ankles" my mother took me to a foot doctor and wore foot braces to no avail. Now the only relief I have is weight loss and foot massager machine I purchased.

This is my thought too about not using those molded arch supports. I worked in a factory on my feet all day and some people came to the plant offering this molded support. Cost back then was $100. I did not want to spend the money but did it anyway, thinking it would help. I wore those supports about a month. Not only did my feet hurt like crazy but I wore them out too. Never again. Also ,my feet cramp instantly if I was to bend them the way you did in the demo. : (

Dr Berg, I have had feet issues for 5 years now.. BUT.. the weird thing is, my HORRIFIC pain is in the top of my foot. While looking down at your left foot the 2nd toe next to the pinky toe, go down about 1.5 inch from the base of that toe and that is where the pain is.. and when it starts from wearing a flat shoe I almost half to crawl by the evening.. I have gone to, two different podiatrist , the first one made the cheapest shoe insoles I have ever seen in my life but they worked for 6 Months, then when those wore down PAIN PAIN WAS BACK.. I tried every tennis shoe told you me by that Dr and by EVERYONE.. and I disliked all of them and non of them worked for even 5 minutes.. so then I was told to but Birkenstock’s sandals, it was like walking for the first time with no pain!!! Six months later they didn’t work anymore, I figured I wore that arch out! Lastly I went to another podiatrist and his orthotic was so laughable, and the cost was $400 and I am pretty sure I could have molded one from clay and had done a better job!! SO.. now this Spring I went and got another pair of Birkenstock’s and my foot didn’t seem to be overly happy has it was last summer.. but no pain though, just my feet felt tired at night. Then online one evening on Famous Footwear I found Birkenstock’s but all constructed of a flip flop material with a slight arch and I though well I try these, so doing yard work and while using the hose getting these wet will not effect them as the leather on the others.. well that is all she wrote.. I loved them so much I ordered another pair a month later. When I now put on a cute shoe (church shoe, heel or no arch support) I can actually wear them (just for several hours ) but with no PAIN.. I can feel in those spots on both feet, like if I were to wear them maybe longer that pain would start.. but my calves always stayed so rock hard.. and that is what these Dr told me why my feet hurt and that my arches were falling, but yet if you were to look at my feet my arches are there, my foot curves up.. Everyone away talks about the bottom of their feet hurting, or the heel, that is never my issue. Sadly neither Dr could tell me what the pain was from and what was hurting in there.. I am going to try to massage as you suggest and see if this will help my feet along with these Birks that seem to keep my feet happy.. UNTIL WINTER.. then what am I going to do!! Feet in Ohio are a struggle!! I am a stylist, I have a salon and I paint and wallpaper on the side.. I need my feet to be happy!! Any suggestions you have further would be welcomed. I love all your videos!! Thank you

Hello doctor, thank you so much for your videos!!! I wanted to ask, I do have flat feet and doctor told me that my lower back hurts a lot and I have injury in my spine because I never had insoles. My doctor said that gradually flat feet affect your spine too. Is it true?

You should not use arch supports daily if you can keep arches from over pronating. But they can be helpful if you occasionally have to walk great distance etc.

I weight 300pnds and have pain on left foot. As soon as I got rid of soft snickers and bought shoes with hard sole, I put inserts for both, pain went away for good. If I walk in flip flops for few hrs pain comes back. So I want to say arch support helps.

Very interesting! I always thought my fallen arches, very wide feet were from walking barefoot all my life (but I did have Rickets when I was small) ...I've always been a little suspicious of arch supports "tried 'em a few times and they hurt after feeling good at first. Shoes bug me in general, where as walking on gravel, rocks and wood chips feels goooood! =D Thank You Dr Berg! You always have some fantastic information to share!

Thank You for making this video and also the one on bunions, because I have a huge bunion on my right foot an flat feet, next to the bunion my second toe is a hammer toe and it is very painful because the bunion overlaps on top of it, is there a solution for hammer toes, I will definitely be trying your methods.

My sister had these issues and my mother used to take her shoes which were built a lot better back in the 70s and 80s and put them on the wrong feet. And she would walk that way for an hour or two it forced the whole foot to go the other way.. I did the same thing to my daughter when I saw one of her feet starting to do the same and she's fine now
