I have the correct toes and 3 pair of LEMS footwear. Good progress over several months. The most amazing change is the aches and pains from my lower back, knees and feet have basically gone away. Even my lower foot neuropathy has lessened due, I believe to the better circulation the toe separation enables. I’m 75 years old and only wish I had discovered these techniques sooner.

Great video. There's one thing I have learnt, that sock choice too is important. I own 15 pairs of vivos, which are wide at the toe-box, but if your socks are tight, the shoe's benefits are reduced. So I now stretch all my socks at the front whilst still wet after washing them.

My mum grew up as a barefoot child, and until her death preferred to go barefoot as much as possible. I, too, live that way, wearing comfortable shoes for work, etc. and taking them off as soon as I enter my house. My mother had her bunions removed when she was in her forties and I am hoping to have the same done soon. In our cases, shoes are definitely NOT to be blamed for our bunions.

Then you must both be flat footed? Flat footed people are more prone to getting bunions. I'm flat footed, so far my bunion isn't so bad and since I've been working from home, since the pandemic, no need to wear shoes, so my bunion doesn't hurt anymore. I also bought those arch support socks, the silicone ones, for when I need to walk a lot.

I gained weight over the last year. I just woke up and looked and surprise I had a bunion. Talk about crying especially from hearing only surgery will get rid of it. My feet are very narrow so I never bought wide shoes . I will definitely be trying this

I’ve been wearing correct toes since watching a Squat U video on the topic around 8 months ago. I can say with full confidence that correct toes are easily the best investment I’ve made in my personal care. The benefits were immediate and revelatory. I’ve had bunions as long as I can remember and the knowledge and feeling of a functioning big toe is still profound. My balance and stability were immediately improved after slipping the “toes” on. I also immediately invested in minimalist foot wear in order to be able to wear the “toes” at all waking moments. I never see myself willingly wearing conventional footwear again. I hope there will be barefoot safety shoes available in the near future! Do your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and spine a favor and buy correct toes and a pair of minimalist shoes! I promise you will not regret the money spent! Also, swinging weights like kettlebells, heavy clubs, or a mace while barefoot with the “toes” is a great way to strengthen the feet.

Totally agree! I too am new to toe spacers and wide toe box shoes - Merrell, Be Lenka, Altra and Dansko (for work). Wish I’d know that my 50 year wear of poor footwear and a 20 year old bunion surgery (now arthritic), painful cortisone shots, impacted my foot health. In the last 3 months since switching to wide toe box shoes/sneakers, my feet have never felt so much better. Knowledge is power and health!

Thank you so much for this clear video! I’m only a teenager, but I’m already developing mild bunions. My mom was a ballet dancer and she has really bad ones, so she always made sure that the shoes my sister and I wear are good for your feet. But somehow, my sister and I still got them. I’m trying to reverse the bunions while I can, so thank you for this video!

I bought some toes spaces and I absolutely love them! My balance is better in the gym, I can do lunges and a lot more things on my feet and it even helped my back, hip and knee pain. I highly recommend!

What a sensible explanation of how we have ended up with bunions. Bad shoe design for a couple of centuries, how crazy ! I loved your explanations and exercises. I've been trying many ways of avoiding surgery and will follow your suggestions. Many thanks

Bad shoes add to the issue but genetics are mostly to blame bc it deals with gait. That is the way you walk. I was willing to listen to him until he said it was not genetic. That is blatantly untrue.

Its you choosing the shoes not the shoe lmao. This mostly happens not because of the design but because people chose the wrong size of the shoes. If you want healthy feet you never wear tight design shoes.

I have a question about activating adductor hallucis: do you find working from dorsal vs plantar direction more effective, or would it be effective as well working from the plantar surface eg with a small ball.

Wow!! I wish I saw this video before I wasted time and money at a podiatrist that I went to for a 2nd time. He said that I have a slight bunion and gave me a cortisone shot and a prescription for a anti inflammortory pills and said to get a shoe insole. I got the insole but, didn't take the pills as I hate taking conventional medicine unless it is the last resort. I already have toe separators but, you have taught me more than those 2 doc visits and this is free information!!! I wish I could just pay you!! I will do these exercise moves and find those shoe recommendations. Thank you so mch!!

I'm a 4th year podiatry student and rarely see this mentioned in school. This is akin to the shoe binding (lotus shoe) in late imperial Chinese women. It's essentially contemporary foot binding. You mentioned lateral deviation of the hallux but there is also medial deviation of the 1st metatarsal bone. I suspect the banded side step and toe spacer causes retroactive lateral deviation of the 1st Metatarsal. Great video!

​@masondixon1718 You are correct. It podiatry, and medical schools in general aren't typically training anyone to fix problems through natural means. They tend to teach what drugs to prescribe, surgeries to perform, or whatever other things they can sell (orthotics) that won't truly ever fix the problem. Most joint/muscle/body pain problems, foot included, are movement problems that shoes and other things we do and wear can contribute to.

Thank you so much for making this video. I was a softball pitcher from 8yo through college and my bunions would bother me so bad by the end of my career. I had no idea that changing my shoes and doing a few simple moves could help correct this. Seriously, thank you. I look forward to trying this.

There are nomadic people in Africa who never wear shoes and have bunions. Bunions are not caused by shoes. Narrow shoes exacerbate symptoms of bunions only. Many people have a bunion on one foot only and not the other. Does that mean they wear different shoes on each foot??!! This guy just wants to sell products and doesn’t know much about complicated biomechanics of human feet.

It doesn't. It didn't mine, and I started in my teens. To wear wide flat shoes, walk bare feet, etc. Didn't help. Still got bunions.

_Contrary to popular belief, bunions are aggravated, not caused, by shoes. The late anthropologist Margaret Meade observed many members of a South Sea island tribe had bunions, yet they had never worn shoes! They usually are the result of inherited faulty foot mechanics that put abnormal stress on the front of the foot._

I have had bunions since 5th grade, when I first noticed they were developing. My mom also had very severe bunions so she was concerned about my feet developing them. She took me to foot doctors but their only solution was surgery which was way too expensive so she started buying my shoes a bit larger so my foot would not be cramped...well over the years, I am not in my 70's this never worked because as I got older I discovered high heels!! I loved my high heels and the way they looked. Even though they caused my feet unbearable pain, I still wore them. Needless to say, my bunios became worse. Finally, in 2018 I decided to have them fixed. I found a foot doctor, who said, "Yes, I can fixe those". He started to explain the surgical procedure which I found really sickening so requested he not describe the surgery, just tell me the outcome...I recall him talking about 'metal rods'...ug. This was my left foot the 'first' surgery was performed on. It was awful, but I was looking forward to being able to wear all my beautiful heels and boots with heels 3 and 4". Well, during the followup after the surgery, I smiled to the doctor and said, "I can't wait to be able to wear my heels". To which he replied, " Heels? You won't be able to wear anything higher that about 1"." I was so devistated I began to cry. Well, the part I did not want him to discuss with me, the actual surgical procedure was that a metal rod would be inserted into my foot making it impossibe for the toe joint to move. I wondered why he convenientlally avoided telling me the outcome of the surgery...I would never have consented to going forward with the surgery if I had known I would end up 'disabled' which is , as far as I am concerned has taken place. To this day, I would like to see the doctor in my head lights!!!! So my right foot still has a bunion. I gave all my beautiful heels and boots with heels away. I have since viewed many videos of bunions being corrected without surgery, or if surgery took place, other choices of surgerical procedures rather than the drastic one I suffered at the hands of the monster disguised as a surgeon. I might also add that my foot is still recovering from the surgery which took place in 2019..Is there any way the surgery I suffered could be corrected and the metal rod removed?

I’m sorry that happened to you. But to be fair, it’s not your doctor’s fault if you consented to not hearing the full explanation of the surgery. 😢 You always need to know the details and ask tons of questions.

I have had bunion surgery on both feet and know that the pain pre-surgery was far worse than post-surgery. If you are not prepared to compromise on what shoes you want/can wear, I would not contemplate surgery which, in itself, I did not find painful at all.

It is incomplete. The ground reaction forces of gait explain a great deal more of the destructive forces. As well as the genetic factors- woman have 2x th number of bunion deformities. His explanation about shoe gear is contributory but not the major source of deformity.... in my opinion.

Greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Your theory is definitely correct !! In Asia, due to the tropical weather & high humidity but for some due to economical restraints we love to wear sandals and slippers daily, therefore we less of these problems. Warm regards

I started with minetonka moccasins. Been wearing the exact zero shoe you showed. Currently on my second pair. Toes have visibly spread and my constant pain in my right foot knee and hip are finally begining to wane.

For anyone switching to barefoot shoes (which everyone should do) I recommend Dr. Emily Splichal's book 'Barefoot Strong,' a very short, concise guide to the best ways to strengthen your feet and make them more supple for barefoot walking and running. In particular, Splichal understands the vital role of dorsiflection and elongating the Achilles tendon, which are not much discussed elsewhere. I've been in minimalist shoes for several years now and they were an improvement on standard footwear right away, but I wish I'd had Splichal's book sooner to help me achieve comfortable, confident natural walking sooner.

WOW, I have the worst bunions in the world, since I was a kid, because it is genetic in my case, and I always wore sports shoes, but when I went to the doctor, he said I needed this type of surgery, but pained the worst scenario, can you please share what the surgery and post surgery consistented?

I’ve been struggling with torn ligaments in the ball of my feet from wearing serving shoes, with a rotates pelvis consequently a limb length discrepancy adding to the problem, thank you so much for this!

Such good information! Thanks! Many years ago I was beginning to develop bunions, and went to an ortho guy. He gave me a prescription for metatarsal bars to be put on the bottom of my shoes (I had them put on the widest ones I could find) and it took care of everything. Today I just wear Birkenstocks year round and enjoy good feet!

Before bunion surgery I had a lengthy discussion with my Foot Doctor AND my Foot Surgeon before having bunion surgery. I had elective bunion surgery thinking it would make my feet not as wide. After bunion surgery I had a lot of problems. The THIRD foot specialist told me that bunion surgery changes the Whole Mechanics of your feet. He showed me posters of the skeletal foot while explaining the complex skeletal bone structure of the foot and how the feet bears the body weight and impact of walking and running. He acted very surprised when I told him he was the first doctor to explain how bunion surgery changes the mechanics of the foot skeletal structure AND how a person needs to learn how to walk CORRECTLY again after bunion surgery. Before bunion surgery my feet were 13 EEE, five years after bunion surgery my feet are 13 EEEEEEEE [8E]. I had no pain before bunion surgery. Having elective bunion surgery is in the top 5 worst decisions I've made in my lifetime. It ruined my feet for the rest of my life.

You are absolutely correct. I found out myself be getting a wider shoe and also a size larger and now things are fine. You would have thought that my podiatrist would have told my this instead of recommending surgery.

I think it’s also important to talk about the very prevalent and unhelpful aesthetic of having narrow feet with as little as possible spaces between the toes. This look is what is considered attractive but for many people their natural foot is wider at the front with gaps between the toes.

Great video. And I should say that toe spacers are really helpful in reducing bunion pain as well. I also suggest socks that make some space between the toes. These socks are like gloves and each toe goes into one of them. Its been more than a year I'm really suffering with the pain. I can not even touch the bone. Such an annoying pain

If you suffer from bunions, you can never over come your problem by this process. NEVER EVER. There is just one solution and that is surgical operation. I had this problem and I got operated. I am very satisfied now. Perfectly straight toes

Having an operation does not work it comes back and If you have it you will be out of action for months i have had one nearly all my life it's a big one never had a problem i am a very fit seven seven walk miles and have no problem at tall have having an operation will take you life away from you so I have decided that mine will be coming with me to the cremation ha ha it's not your shoes that has course it

This is interesting. When I was a child, I preferred going outside barefoot or wear Japanese rubber slippers or open-toed sandals. I have flat feet, and always thought that was the cause of it (not that I minded). My mother didn't like this habit of mine, because it wasn't "proper". Since gettting an office job, my toes have narrowed and my gait isn't what it used to be because of the shoes I had to wear. Thanks for the video, will start correcting this issue immediately!

I started to wear mens socks because womens socks fit tightly on my feet & it hurts my bunions especially womens ankle socks. I switched to mens socks & my feet feel so comfortable.

Thank you for saying that the cause of bunions is shoes (that fit our feet badly). It's so clear that this is the case - people in societies where they don't wear shoes have toes that stick out nice & straight...

Hey Aaron, love all the content! Keep up the great work! Is there a point at which the bunion is too big….or a large amount of growth that would make it more beneficial to get surgery? I had a soccer injury about 10 years ago and my bunion is fairly large in size.

Try Correct Toes and open toe box shoes. If that doesn’t help, I would see podiatry.

I had bunion surgery 25 years ago and was never told how to make it better with the shoes or exercises and now I have pains from the pin in my foot and the bunion is back. I would say try to stay away from the surgery.

Wow, what great timing. I just bought Xero shoes to have something stable but low cushion for plyos and deadlifts. I’ve had a bunion since my teens. I had no idea my shoes might be causing it but hoping with some of these tips I can correct it because I suspect it’s contributing to imbalances all the way up the kinetic chain.

This was the most informative video on bunions I have come across. Unlike the ones on the video, my bones on the big toes are more on the top as opposed to being on the side. I had surgery about twenty years ago because they were painful. I am starting to feel the pain again and I am now 55yo. My worry is that I might be developing arthritis. My other biggest problem is that I am flat footed and all my shoes end up developing a curve shape like a banana. I always use running shoes with support. What do you recommend I do? Walking Barefoot is great 👍🏾 I also have racon foot 🦶🏽 I hate orthodox shoes I don’ t believe in them at all everyone has been getting on my case abut that issue for yrs but I don’t listen but I noticed and I noticed and really don’t like is having bunions I wonder if being flat foot my caused my bunions issues; in my school yrs I used lots of fire kicks but I also used flip flops 🩴 and walk a lot barefoot 🦶🏽 like an Apache lol!!! All of this are def questions I like to ask a foot dr 👨‍⚕️

Contrary to what is commonly thought (and espoused by medical practitioners) is that arthritis is reversible (just like bunions). Stretching, yoga, weight training (easing into it), and physical work and activity can overcome it. Also certain supplements like Instaflex can boost collagen in joint connective tissue. I'm 70 and have had great success. (No lower disk due to setting chokers logging as a child, broke vertebra in high school, gun shot through the lungs 1971, several mesh hernia repairs, etc. -- all while I was young and hip replacement a decade back). At this time I can do about all as I could when 20 (but a little slower): leg press 1000lbs, run, etc. If you start having trouble in a certain area, e.g. thumb or finger, work on it (isolation stretches and strength training).

I had heel pain for life. Had to have cushy shoes all the time. No barefoot ever, it hurt my heels. OMAD LCHF reversing all the metabolic things. Now magically i can go barefoot, zero heel pain on concrete. And my big toe has started to straighten out. It was at a 25 deg bend my whole life. It's more like 10-15 now. I blamed shoes back then, but i'm doubting that to some extent. Because i went for wider shoes in general early on when I saw this toe curled in. This toe never really hurt ever. I'm 40 now. This diet change of about 6 months ago helped the heel pain and now I just looked at my toes, they can be splayed out and spread very easily on their own. There's a lot going on for sure. My mom had terrible bunions and 3 surgeries that didn't fix it at all. She had cancer too. I'm pretty sure it's combination of these things. Shoe wore tight high heel shoes for a while. Then switched to lower, normal width and it didn't help much. Tight shoes and metabolic problems is probably the main problem for me any ways. It is very interesting. I'm on a podcast listening to mark cucuzzella, saying diabetes forms glycation products floating around makes things sticky. Well i bet that has something to do with it. I do have very wide feet. 11" long by 4.3" wide. Its tough finding shoes. I'll look at your recommendations. I just checked while doing your exercise and stretches. My arch collapsed. Oh my the plot thickens. My mom had pretty high arches too. Mine was medium. Now it's going towards medium flat. What is going on. I'm going to continue your stretches and things and see what happens. I did try "yoga toes" for an hour or so a few days a week 20 years ago with no progress. That thing hurt back then. I'll try it again.

I'm waiting for minimalist shoes to go more mainstream and to have more minimalist brands to pop up (or Big brands like Nike to start selling them) because since pursuing healthier stronger feet, getting a barefoot brand, and wait toe spacers, my bunion has become way less pronounced!! So many shoes are sooooo narrow!!

I wear toe socks. They helped enormously because they slightly separate my toes. I was to,d by a foot doctor that I needed an operation. I healed it naturally with toes socks, TCM and changing my shoes.

A lot of bunions are hereditary. They normally come from your fathers side. Do you know if your father has them ?

For me it came from both sides of the family and I had them my whole life, to it definitely IS hereditery. It got worse in time for sure, but I had them since I wasn't even wearing any shoes. So I must laugh every time someone says with such confidence it's just from shoes. My Husband is wearing the same incorrect shoes as everyone and his feet are freekishly wide and not adapted to any footware. Sorry, I won't ever believe in "not hereditary".

@@elizakowalska9811 exactly, I’ve had them since a little girl. And now they’re even worse, I hate it. My dad had them and all of my 1st cousins(uncles children only) on my dad’s side have them. I forgot what show I was watching yearsssss ago but, the Dr definitely said they are inherited from your father. So nothing besides surgery will fix them. However, there are ways to slow the progression.

Correct toes are $60, for a chunk of plastic. eBay sell similar chunks for a more reasonable price.

@@chayneznfayme I bought the originals before the knockoffs came out and haven’t needed a second pair. They are medical grade silicone, not plastic. When you buy both pairs let us know how they compare. Maybe you can save us some money.

@@chayneznfayme CorrectToes are the best for everyone, both because its material and taylor made skills. Thus, they adapt to feet and can be enlarged/reduced according what needed. Cheaper alternative might fit some feet, this is possible, but usually they do not and cannot be adapted along time (feet change during improvement process).
