Shaman King is a series that means the world to me and has become a huge part of my identity. I named myself Asakura because of Yoh. I collected every volume of the manga. I bought every video game I could get my hands on. I even started collecting the figures. In Russia and ex-Soviet countries Shaman King is often remembered with nostalgia even among those who doesn't really like anime or manga. In is a part of our childhood and youth. Yoh Asakura is different from Naruto, Luffy, Ichigo or Goku, because he isn't some hot-blooded guy with no brains. The setting is the real world, which is also doesn't often occurs in the shonen manga. It has some thoughts on the human nature. If Takei only knew how loved is Shaman King here, he would have a little better opinion on himself. And new adaptation is coming! It is a chance to change everything.

This interview felt so somber for the most part, but his line at the end about proving that Shaman King deserves its place gave me the biggest grin, and seeing him laughing afterwards was especially uplifting. Shaman King was the first manga I started reading in the first issue of Shonen Jump I received, and it's always meant so much to me. It used to be up there with One Piece and Bleach in my eyes, even though its popularity eventually dropped. The series is basically on life support now and Hiroyuki Takei is clearly having a tough time, but hearing that he'll put his all in his next work fills me with hope that he'll really pull it off. Shaman King fans like me still exist, and we'll always be rooting for you!

Shaman King was and will remain one of the most vivid memories for those who grew up in the early 2000s throughout the post-Soviet space. Ask any twenty-year-old guy or even a girl about what they did every day after school as a child, most will say that they ran home so as not to miss a new episode. The first anime for many of us. What we have never seen before. The story and the characters who attracted attention and limitless child imagination. As I got older, I discovered the original manga and found out the true ending. I was shocked. I could not believe that the very heroes of my childhood actually lost and that the main villain won. I understood that it was more logical, even the characters themselves understood that there was no other way, and yet they managed to do everything possible to save the world. I still dream of a possible remake of the anime series, but I know very well author’s thoughts about this idea and will just keep these hopes in my heart. Anyway, I will be happy because I will have a wonderful tradition of doing two things once a year: to rewatch the Lord of the Rings trilogy and re-read the Shaman King manga. Thanks to Hiroyuki Takei-san for our happy childhood. Thank you for teaching us that it is always worth looking for good in people, even if others refuse. Thank you so much for the wonderful characters and the exciting story. But most of all I thank you for Anna. P.S. And of course thanks to the Archipel channel for this video.

My all time favorite manga. Shaman King taught me a lot from shounen, but it also taught me that Shounen doesn't have to be senseless fighting or too juvenile. It introduced me to characters I loved, hated, appreciated and accepted, due to their different points of view and in a way... it introduced me to philosophy and ethics. I remember reading interviews of Hiroyuki Takei how he would talk about the characters as if they existed. It was funny to me because I thought that too... they felt real even though I knew they were not. If you are willing to open up and look at the right places, you will see that Shaman King has a certain quality that no other manga has. It has heart, sincerity and a soul even though he doesn't realize it. It gets cynical at times, but in cyniscim there is always a ray of hope in a way that is believable. I have nothing but respect for this man right here. If he was making things for having fun himself, I am thankful for that. If he was trying to do something different, he got it. If he felt like he was losing grip of what he wanted to do, I am also thankful for it because it gave us Kang Zen Bang. Shaman King has had a special place in my heart and was, is and will always be the manga that introduced me to things I will never experience in any other manga. I also wished that he would release a Seinen manga to pursue all of those dark notes in Shaman King but if he wants to give it a try once again with Shounen manga, hey, I am sure he can do it. I am sure he is able to do it! PS. Shaman King Flowers had a lot of potential, don't lose grip Takei-sensei! PPS. I love this man.

He is the only mangaka in the world that i have given myself the opportunity and time to go through their whole body of work, and it is well deserved. it is a god damn fucking shame that Hiroyuki-sama isnt revered in the industry as one of the greatest of all time along with his counterparts from that era. i wish i was able to articulate my sentiments towards this man in a more profound way but it is one of those things that is so close to my heart that human words could NEVER do it justice to explain the way that Shaman King makes me feel or the devoted love that i have for it. Hearing him get down on himself has me wincing a little.. Shaman King was never a favorite, but it’s definitely a memorable piece of my childhood. Even just watching the silly 4Kids dub, then eventually picking up the GNs whenever I had birthday or Christmas money, I knew there was something unique that had been brought to this series. It’s spiritual, yet has these “cool” western sensibilities. Brutal, but full of humor and warmth. Mainstream-ish, but decidedly its own thing. It’s been said that the best anime and manga bring elements from outside the medium to strengthen their storytelling, to humanize their characters and experiences with a wide breadth of what the real, peopled world has to offer. Takei is definitely among the ranks of creators who excel at this. Shonen manga is better for him, as were my awkward middle school years.

Only to realize it has a manga When i turned 13 and read it all through and waited eagerly till I got to the last chapter. Thank you for giving me a world to experience and love. I think the reason that Shaman King doesn't get the "respect" that it deserves is because sits on the duality of both mainstream and avantgarde. The plot and world-building may seem like a great set-up for a shonen show but it goes way deeper than that in terms of spirituality. At the same time though, the series would pull some eyebrow-raising moments through its plot beats, which I think alienated some readers. There was also an inconsistent tonal shift midway. This duality of not finding itself in the mainstream and being in the "draw what I wanna draw, don't care about the readers" mentality that Hiroyuki said himself in the video, might be the reason why Shaman King finds itself in an interesting place.
@emraugnotavailable4 жыл бұрын
It might be so. I never noticed the change in tone... or I just like manga with tonal shifts. But I agree of Shaman King being avantgarde, I think you really hit the nail there.

As a lot of people here, Shaman King is a huge part in my life. I read the manga every now and then with the same thrill as when I first read it. Watching this video made me want to fly to Japan to meet Takei and give him all my thanks for what he did for me (for us, for the manga world). He's a wonderful mangaka, what he said in the interview is exactly what I feel about his work. For those who didn't know, he gave Shaman King a proper end (not every country published it, sadly), a sequel, "Shaman King Flowers" which are now named "Shaman King The Super Star" cause Takei Sensei left the Jump edition to Kodansha edition and two prequel, Shaman King Zero, a serie of one shots about the main characters and Shaman King Red Crimson. Shaman King The Super Star and Shaman King Red Crimson are prepublished in the Shonen Magazine Edge, every month since 2018. Toutes les infos par là : www.kana.fr/shaman-king-star-edition-extrait-chapitre-1/#.XgIXtfzjKUk And for all the fans, here, the link for the Discord group, if you want to chat with other Shaman King fans all over the world, or just stay up-to-date with news about Shaman King and Takei : discord.gg/Gtax3Zr (On y a un salon en français, pour les fans français qui auraient du mal/peur de s'exprimer en anglais sur un serveur :D)

This video feels like a fever dream of a memory someone had in another life, it feels like there is such sadness, regret, nostalgia and other emotions in this man (the music, and empty place filled with memorabilia helps too) Reminds me a little of "Johnny Cash - Hurt" music video. I see no reason for Shaman King to be underestimated, it is a type of stylized art, I personally think it is a very good work with a lot of quality, the anime has very colorful art, this type of stylized art pleases fans who know that mangas don't need to be realistic to be good, greetings Hiroyuki Takei!

I had just recently started watching Shaman King again, but this time in Japanese with subs to get the true feel of the anime (since the english version is edited). I had only watched it in English (the first time I saw it I was either 7, 8 or 9 years old). I truly believe Shaman King is overlooked because its unique. It doesnt have the style or structure of a typical shonen manga, Yoh as the main character is proof of this. Yoh is calm, relaxed and wise while the standards of main characters for Shonen (at the time SK was serialised) was the opposite. One Piece's Luffy is a example. Nowdays shonen main characters are versitle (Izuku, Tanjiro, Emma, Senku, etc). If SK came out today people would appreciate Yoh as a Shonen main character more. Shaman King is my favorite anime, I want to thank Mr Takei for making such a vast world of interesting characters, while using a unique idea of Shamanism. Yoh and Manta's friendship, the silent love between him and Anna, and his and Amidamaru's bond are the best things about the series for me. I truly hope Shaman King can recieve a remake for the anime, and for Mr Takei to be able to write his true story. Thank you Mr Takei for creating Shaman King, it inspired me to create a story of my own to share someday. I will also support his next project. Merry Christmas everyone.

This was such a great interview ! I've actually never seen Hiroyuki sensei live before, and it was such an eye-opener ! I love how he mentioned he didn't wanted to make an untertainment, but actually wanted to spread some wisdom to the audience. He's indeed got a very close personality to Yoh. I can totally picture now how this character came to be. It was basically him in his twenties. This manga was also among my favorites in the age between Naruto and Bleach, but at some point, I could see it started collapsing under its own weight. Now with hindsight, I feel sad that I got tired of it in the end and never got to finish it. So I never knew he actually didn't even get to finish it ! The show was cut ! Now I'll have to rewatch the entire run (it's been almost 20 years !) With his final ending (I'm glad he got the chance to actually finish it under his terms a few years later) ! Also, the segment where he talks about how he got such a big best place for getting lots of assistants to come and learn and chill all together, like in good old times, and now it sits there completely empty because as the age changed with Internet, everybody is now working from home. That part completely depressed me ! Here's a man who lived his youth through the camaraderie in the studio of one of the most famous mangaka of his time, Nobuhiro Watsuki, the author of Kenshin the Vagabond, working and chilling with some of the soon-to-be most influential mangakas of our era, and now having made it big and being able to recreate that for himself in his own studio, the age changes, and this period of time he tried to recreate for the next generation just vanished into thin air in front of him... Heavy stuff ! But he seems to have adapted himself, which, kudos to him, may have actually brought him some needed peace. I wish him all the greater things to come for whatever comes next to him, either in his career and his life. Happy 2020, Hiroyuki sensei !

I live in Argentina. My first contact with his work was trough the anime adaptation. And I think is an underrated GEM. I know Shaman Kings isn’t as popular as some other shonen. But who cares. He created and incredibly world, full of very interesting characters, a great story, an amazing mix of cultures and religions... what he made, what he envisioned... it’s outstanding. I bought the manga when a publisher from my country bought the rights. Unfortunately, in the middle of publications he changed publisher so the manga here it’s been in the fridge for two years or so. I had to finish it on internet. Regardless, I HOPE, WISH someday we could have a faithful anime adaptation of the manga and maybe (this is wishful thinking) a movie. I grew up with Shaman King. Thanks for make me believe in your world, Takei.

Most people working in the lower levels of the hierarchy can't afford the rent for Tokyo, so they live further away. One to two hours commute per way isn't unusual, so I can relate with wanting to spend more time at home and with friends - especially considering that Japanese people tend to put in long hours. Thank you very much for this! Hiroyuki Takei has always been my favorite mangaka (mainly because of Shaman King, but I enjoyed his other works as well), but I just now realized I've never really seen him or know much about his career. Although I haven't really been able to get into the sequel series which he has penned after Shaman King, I definitely support his notion that Shaman King deserves more recognition. To me, it is one of the best Jump series, but it certainly does feel like it has become a forgotten classic of sorts. I think his musings on Shaman King and his own position in the world of manga is very interesting. I feel like Shaman King has always floated somewhere between the mainstream and the alternative, especially the further it progressed. Always being somewhat rooted in Shonen characteristics generally and Jump traditions specifically, such as rival characters, tournament structures, battle centric plotlines etc. but also pushing back on those elements and playing around with concepts which seemingly have no place in a Battle Shonen Jump Series. Kind of a dangerous position to be in: best case scenario, it will be able to appeal to different audiences; worst case scenario, it won't appeal to a specific audience hard enough. The latter might be exactly why Shaman King waned in popularity, but those same elements which might have made it hard to stick around in the rankings is also precisely what I loved about Shaman King.
