This song is about their guitarist who sadly passed away from cancer. The visual effect (where the band members sort of break apart into particles) grows throughout the video showing how cancer can start small and end up encompassing your entire body/life. I believe some of the lyrics reflect this feeling too as they had to watch him steadily get worse and worse, as the cancer took hold, until his passing.

This one came out shortly after Tom had passed. Such a terrible time for the band. Tom was the primary songwriter and guitarist. The album right before this was all very grim and pessimistic. The album was released, and the band were supposed to embark on their biggest tour to date, and they cancelled all the shows, and said nothing as to what was going on.

Oh my god YES. Older Architects was actually something else- I don’t particularly have a problem with the newer stuff like a lot of others, but their older stuff literally redefined metalcore. Lost Forever // Lost Together, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, and Holy Hell (this album) all especially are dripping with so much emotion that it’s insane. As others have mentioned, their lead guitarist Tom Searle (who was also the twin brother of their drummer Dan) passed away from cancer in 2017, and in the timeframe that they were dealing with that the music they put out was absolutely drenched in emotion and passion. AOGHU particularly deals a lot with Tom basically coming to terms with the fact that he was going to die, and Holy Hell deals with the rest of the band picking up the pieces in the aftermath and learning to accept his death. They are genuinely two of the most beautiful metalcore albums ever, and I cannot recommend more stuff off of both enough!

Don't forget about daybreak! All the songs there were such a banger, hollow crown was a good metalcore/mathcore album
@levisalazar80318 ай бұрын
Tom actually wrote all the songs for them. All the lyrics were his and Sam sung them. Tom was very much the producer and main songwriter for the band. The reason for their new stuff sounding different is because Dan has filled that role. And of course Sam and Josh contributed a lot as well. On Holy Hell they finished some of the songs Tom had started writing already. Doomsday was one of them. The first song written for the album and the last to be recorded.

Love this song, I'm sure someone else will explain the meaning behind it (the band coming to terms with the death of their lead guitarist / songwriter Tom to cancer; he was also the drummer Sam's brother, iirc.). You should check out the Piano Reprise version the band put out for Doomsday to get a bit more of the feeling & context behind the lyrics. I think I read somewhere that the main riff for this song was one that Tom was working on before his death.

The concept for the video was heavily inspired by a movie called The Fountain with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. The more recent songs that mix in more of the clean vocals provide so much more depth for me although there are many long standing fans who have had difficulty in what they see as a softening of Architects sound. Well worth checking out more. I’d like to see what you think of them playing the song ‘Animals’ Live alongside an orchestra at the Abbey Road studios.
@Wagwanfam698 ай бұрын
It’s not a softening of architects sound that pisses of long standing fans. It’s them having piss poor song writing now. Terrible riffs, uninspired lyrics and the most generic “dad rock” type chorus’. Especially compared to anything prior from them. They’ve been on a major downfall since Tom died and holy hell released.
@scifimonkey38 ай бұрын
@@Wagwanfam69 and yet their record sales have gone up…………Not knocking Tom as the work they did whilst he was still alive was brilliant but I think piss poor to describe what they are doing now is a bit of an exaggeration. They have evolved but clearly you haven’t (and there is no reason you should).
@Wagwanfam698 ай бұрын
@@scifimonkey3 yes because it’s generic, radio friendly rubbish.. as I said. Generic radio friendly shit is more accessible than metalcore. Doesn’t mean the music is good. Nothing they’ve written after holy hell even sounds like architects

Have you went and listened to earlier architects? They had catchy singing songs. It's nothing new for old architects fans but if you like the new stuff that cool and I'm not mad at them for trying new stuff. It's just not for me so I keep my mouth shut and listen to the old stuff. I just wish fans would have the same mentality. Fans that made their thing the blegh made Sam stop doing which was petty but hey I get it. Then they wrote seeing red trolling those fans lol.
