this was one of the best things I have watched on youtube in years. Real life living it and surviving it. These two people are true humans being. The courage to do this shows what we have lost. They are just happy to be alive while most of us dread waking up to go to work again. I needed to see this today thank you this was truly beautiful. I'll be 42 in the summer and boy did I waste my youth. I'm healthy and if all goes well I'll have a solid adventure before I pass on to whatever is next.

I am a retired trapper in Northern Ontario and have loved and lived your experiences in various ways enjoying nature. Like you , my age (70)has overcome my youth and I can no longer enjoy what I once did out in the wild.Watching your documentary brought me back to memories of my numerous rivers, lakes , and waterfalls and beautiful sun rises, sunsets and starlit cool evenings. Thank you for sharing your life and memories. Ray McDevitt.

Thank you, this touched me profoundly......as much as I understood your final decision it broke my heart to watch you tear down all you had built. So many of us spend our lives in jobs and/or situations we hate, not wanting to wake up and slog through another day. What an amazing life and my heart aches for the loss of your son who was very close in age to my own. Blessings to you both on your next journey.

I've lived off grid in Trapper Creek Alaska for 20 years now and I lived in Chugiak for before here for 10 years. I will never leave. It would be nice to have electricity, but I'm not seeing it happen before I get to go home to heaven. Hello Tom!!! Who I met in Chugiak 30 years ago. These two wonderful people are true hard core Alaskans, and in my opinion no one can be better human beings. 😊

I’m so sorry for the loss of your son. My older brother lost his only son in 2003 when his boy was 13 years old. He drown in the KUSKOKWIM River. I can say it was the most difficult thing he lived through so far. Parents never want to experience the loss of a child before they themselves perish from this world. So, even it had been a while back, I’m sorry for your loss. May your sons memory live in eternal.

Well the title did not disappoint you really are the daughter of the Artic! What bravery it took to start on on your first journey to the wilderness by canoe. Im so sorry you lost your beloved son, it breaks my heart to see yours was so broken. All the lovely things you built in his honor for his remembrance was touching. I dont understand why the cabins had to come down, I wouldnt have done that but to each his own. thankyou for posting this video, I watched it earnestly looking for tips and tricks of how to survive a winter up North. god bless you both.

You lived quite an experience in bush Alaska. Surviving your first winter Above the Arctic Circle on your own with no home, and not much food at beginning of arrival is quite an obstacle to overcome. I was born and raised in bush Alaska. My parents somewhat did what you guys did, except they moved to Red Devil on the KUSKOKWIM River. My dad was born in 1919 and had recently got out of the army and had served in World War II. He couldn’t handle being among regular society so he hitch hiked from Michigan to Alaska. He met my mom, an Eskimo, in Nome when she was in her early 20’s. They got married and moved to Michigan. My mom was carrying my oldest brother, Nestor, first born. My mom couldn’t handle the 90 degree temperatures and the 90% humidity. So they moved back to Alaska. They built a cabin in Red Devil, where my dad work in the silver mine during spring/summer/fall and trapped fur during the winter months. My dad used sled dogs to travel and check his trapline and haul wood. Anyway, it’s a long story, just as yours. Their lives took shape together from the 1950’s in bush Alaska. They lived a life of hard work, and had become self sustainable by harvesting fish, berries, big game, small game and survival of the fittest. They both lived their entire lives in Alaska and raised 5 children. You could write a book about their lives and lifestyle. Anyway, I’m jumping around. Take care,

Huih!... What a beautiful documentary-movie! I was wondering through most of it how first of all Jean and Phil could simply leave their cabin for such long stretches of time without apparent fear of it being raided by bears, for example, and then Jean and Tom. Then, the hunters came into the picture... And I can absolutely understand that at their age, and they didn't mention this as a reason, Jean and Tom would not want their cabins to become lodging for any of these hunters in the autumns! And that they would need to take them down for that reason too. Just very sad this finite ending of their stays there in 2018... I hope very much that they have found a new project somewhere and are still happy! Thank you for sharing this movie with us!
