Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
In 2007, the British Army placed an order for 582 AI Arctic Warfare Super Magnum rifles chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, formally adopting the model as the L115A3 sniper rifle. This followed special forces use of the .338 Accuracy International rifles in Afghanistan, where the A1 (fixed stock) and A2 (folding stock) models had both been given designations.With the adoption of the L115, the British retired all of their remaining L96A1 rifles, and moved to the .338 cartridge for all of their sniping equipment. At this same time, the SSIP (Sniper System Improvement Program) was improving and updating all the ancillary gear used with the guns - scopes, bipods, ballistic calculators and training programs, spotting scopes, and more. These remain the current British sniper weapon today, and they are quite formidable kit in properly trained hands.
Thanks to Steve Houghton for providing me access to this rifle! If you are interested in learning more, I highly recommend checking out Steve's newly released book, "The British Sniper: A Century of Evolution". It can be found at:

The reason for AI not offering fluted barrels in their regular catalog is because they did a big lengthy study into barrel harmonics and temperatures effecting accuracy and consistency and found that all fluting does is slightly decrease the weight for a larger profile, but has big issues with uneven heating/cooling of the barrel (much the same as why tanks main guns have thermal sleeves/shrouds) and that the top and bottom of the barrel would heat/cool unevenly which would shift the shape of the barrel and effect its point of impact consistency, whereas a non-fluted barrel does not exhibit this anywhere near as strongly.
@discostu1uk
@discostu1uk 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, was hoping Ian would go into more detail with the fluted barrel issue but this has scratched that itch. Nice to see someone contributing to the the conversation in a meaningful way and not just turning the comments into a "your riffle doesn't hold the record anymore!" guff.
@Ihasanart
@Ihasanart 5 жыл бұрын
@Stephen Carran It's not going to be any less accurate a barrel, it just heats and cools differently, as long as your aware of that and give it time to cool properly and don't expect it to have the same POI when its real hot compared to cold then you'll be fine.

Followed by 1 for the receiver of the gun, so he wouldn't have to keep shooting each person who came up to re-crew it. It's not, IIRC, quite a case of '3 Rounds, 3 Kills' as he zeroed the rifle and perfected his aim on a rock close to the target immediately before engaging the actual targets. In the environment of battle the enemy didn't notice those extra shots.

The LMG crew as you say, were 2,475m away.

I have an AEMKII in 308. I wish mine had the 3 position fire selector and the rails in the front. The reliability and accuracy of these rifles is unbelievable. At 500 yards, even with the 308, it gets boring because you just can't miss.

What this rifle means is that a typical British sniper has a range and power advantage over any other sniper they might encounter. The only thing that beats .338 Lapua Magnum is .50 BMG, and only in terms of energy, as few .50 BMG rifles have the required precision at extreme ranges.

Our section had a GPMG operator who loved showing his accuracy with 7.62 NATO at a range of 435mtrs. He recorded unbelievable groupings at that distance with iron sights. Never found out why 435mtrs was the golden landing zone. But we would've relied on him as a DMR type if we were stuck.

To be honest I'm kinda surprised to see the lack of Counter-Strike related comments. Anyhoo, I'm guessing the AWM is very similar in handling and overall performance to the SAKO TRG-42, which I had the privilege to shoot while I serving in KFOR. Truly a "point and click" rifle, it was completely impossible to miss to under 600m.

@@hooligan_dub If we go by CS 1.6, the "AWP" in that was actually an AWM, as there never was a .338LM version of the AWP (go check what the ammo was that you were buying). This is the actual "AWP" of the game.
