Cain isn’t a coward. He has imposter syndrome. He constantly does the opposite of what his fear wants him to do, which means he’s brave not a coward. Bravery isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the conquest of it.

I agree, I suspect he started to be written as slightly more cowardly- but his rationalisation of some of the brave stuff he does, rings very hollow- very clearly suffering from imposter syndrome. Some of the best officers I have served with have imposter syndrome - I worry about those who don't have it, because it means they never doubt or self reflect on their decisions. Cain is also very decisive - which also reflects the golden rule of " a bad decision is better than no decision".

I think my favourite thing about your painting tutorials is how tackling a miniature with quite a lot of detail feels less intimidating after watching it broken down into simple steps - Yarrick looks awesome and just seeing the finished model I think I would feel it’s totally beyond me but watching each bit and thinking “I could do that” totally takes the fear out of it. Thanks Peachy!!

I think Cain is a good representation of a 40k Commissar, summary execution is stated to be a last resort and a Commissars main tools are words and lead by example. The Cain books say he's a bit of an anomaly but he's learned from seeing what got other Commissars "accidentally" shot. Also, not a coward just good self preservation mindset, even Psykers and Inquisitors know he's a true hero at heart. Thanks for the great video Peachy, would love to see the flip side of this and do old Ghazghkull if you ever get the time. Thank you.

I think the issue they have is while they are (on paper) ideal human protagonists (they can be anywhere the Guard are fighting but exist outside the Guard command structure so can move more freely than others). They can’t act in the lore like they are meant to on the table top (executing everyone) because I think many would be less likely to root for them in the books. Cain is also very Harry Flashman in space. Lastly the idea of Orks making Yarrick immortal because they believe it so is god tier genius! Great video and great paint job! 🍑
@Snidhog4 ай бұрын
You see the same thing with a lot of Imperial protagonists, especially the more dogmatic ones. Can't have them be hateful zealots because then they'd be unlikable, but you also can't have them not end up dutiful, loyal servants of the Emperor so you end up with a lot of very samey grey paste characters. Sisters of Battle get it particularly hard; they're meant to be fanatics, but too often you get determination and decency without any real zeal and nastiness. Once the protagonist pressure is off you can get some real ghouls though. Volpone Glory had a trio of commissars of varying relevancy that ran the full spectrum; the aggressive and overly direct cadet, the ancient and silent specter of death and the charismatic and cunning propagandist. I really enjoyed that book; even the "good" Volpone were struggling not to look down their noses at their lessers, and there were some real monsters among the main cast.

I think the thing with Commissars is they have the power to be ruthless disciplinarians when such is required but the Heroes of the Imperium that we get novels written about are not some Punishment Detail Drillmaster in a force of unruly nobodies or typical humans pushed to the breaking point. These types of Commisars are often portrayed more like antagonists or at least anti-heros in other character's stories. I'm thinking about the likes of Chief Commissar Shand in the Minka Lesk novels, Beije from the Caiphus Cain series, Hark when he first joins the Tanith or the nameless Commissar who shoots a trooper for "losing" his lasrifle to carry another injured trooper during the retreat in Cadia Stands (that one always stuck with me). Overall I just think no one has found a way to make a typical Commissar the hero (or at least the protagonist) of a story yet.

The female commissar Severina on the turntable is honestly the BEST commissar model for me. I remember Yarrik, I was a key timer 30 years ago in Cambridge GW and on my course in Notts I didn’t have a lot of money so I picked up a few lead minis and he was one of them. I regret not saving up more money so I could buy more because we got to buy it for weight rather than per blister
@PeachyTips4 ай бұрын
Yeah getting stuff by weight was a wild time lol, and I’m glad I threw that little banner too in, glad it’s if use
@redsven76244 ай бұрын
Commissars are a great example of the issue GW has run into with 40k, it is a hideously dark parody of a universe, but then at some point, they made them the protagonists. Writing protagonists that are fundamentally the bad guys is difficult so it is no wonder they have strayed. from being the model commissar. I think this will become harder for them to navigate as they become increasingly pop culture. The beauty of the wargames though is we can create our own world within the setting, something that the current model of advancing timeline makes trickier, but still possible Side note there are some really interesting stuff in the background which hopefully make the channel soon
@hopelessedgelord4 ай бұрын
Well that's it a model Commissar is an idiotic psychopath most of the time. Because of that then there's not much depth to be had in the protagonist. With why often they are secondary antagonists in guard stories. It's also why alot of attempts to make new Commissar protagonists fall flat. Like Severina Rhaine is such a boring and flat character in her book. She's just a tick list of what makes a Commissar and tragic backstory. She exists for the visual of a female Commissar and that's it. Unlike any Commissar in say the Gaunts Ghost series who all have defined edges even if they are side characters with a small impact.

I love the sentiments here and think that often as main characters it is easier to get behind those charismatic commissars. In the more stereotypical commissar role is Chief Commissar Shand and retinue in the Lesk series, particularly Traitor Rock. One of them is described as a butcher and Lesk is nervous to have him with her since he is trigger happy and shortly after executes an injured trooper so as to keep momentum.

Love Commissars in the 41 st millennium. Such a great addition to the background. Also love the models, especially the three ones that came out about 15 years ago. You had the one charging forward, the one reading the uplifting primer, and one administrating the ultimate act of discipline. Each is an example of the roles of the commissar. Fantastic models. I think most commissars only kill their own side when it's the only option. There's a great scene in the book "His Last Command" where Commissar Hark doesn't fire at infantry running away from an enemy armoured assault, saving his bullet instead for the commander of a tank squadron which should have supported the infantry. He knows that the infantry had no option, and it was the tank commander's failings that deserved punishment. So well written, and sums up how commissars work in the God Emperor's Imperial Guard. Anyway, cracking video. Cheers for posting Mr Peach.

To be fair, Gaunt meets plenty of other execution-obsessed Commissars, i think it's good to have a story about an atypical Commissar, same way as Sharpe being an unusal officer... i love the development of Hark when he joins the Ghosts. Commissars haven't changed IMO. The problem is that, from a marketing point of view, every new release needs to be bigger and cooler than the last to justify its existence. The new Cadians? So disciplined their home planet got destroyed without them ordering a retreat. DKoK? Canonically execute Commissars for being a bit limp-wristed about certain death. Catachans? They face scarier creatures than a Commissar before they even join the Guard. Scions? They went to the Schola Progenium alongside the Commissars, probably bullied them for being teacher's pets. Who are the modern day Commissars actually supposed to enforce discipline on? Until the Guard get some canonically 'worse' units (Feral Worlders, PDF/Conscripts, Penal Guard etc) who can be herded into the enemy's guns by a Commissar, then as far as I can see they're basically redundant.

Concerning Ciaphas Cain, I like to compare him more to Han Solo. Bit of a coward, but ultimately very capable and lucky. Also, one cannot overemphasize Ciaphas’ reliance on his malodorous valet/clerk/batman, Jürgen. Games Workshop really should have made an Inquisitor Amberley Vail model, so we can take Ciaphas and Jürgen in her retinue.

The red sash IS the Commissar's badge of office and is in my view more important than the hat or the coat (which not all commissar models have). I ended up modelling the Cadian Castellan as a Commissar as they oddly do have a sash, weird omission.

The commisar attached to Dalin Criid's unit in Armour Of Contempt is pretty keen on shooting guard troops...can't remember his name, though.

I'd love to get my hands on that The Commissar's Duty mini, shame it was an event exclusive cause it should have been the main release model imo

In my ideal world, Commissar models on the tabletop would have a small chance to get fragged by the guardsmen unit they're trying to "inspire". C'mon, GW rules team, do iiiit!!! (Also, another fantastic video - keep it up!)

Flashman in Space for me what got me into reading 40K, your Cain model is great wish GW would release an official one for him.

For me Cain is Flashman in Space, they're even written in the same "curated found memoir" style.

To me, Colonel Commissar Schaeffer from the Last Chancers was a pretty cool commissar.

I think Schaeffer was just a colonel, I don’t remember him becoming a commissar, happy to be wrong though

On that HH vs Commissar books argument I'd say Commissar wins out even as a big HH fan. HH some amazing high points with a lot of books I love but also a lot more fluff that probably could have been trimmed. Gaunts Ghost and Cain are a lot more consistent throughout and still great. Plus doing sharpe/flashman/black adder in space was an amazing idea. Now we need a 40k version of Aubrey Maturin and Hornblower.
