Spot on. I think a big aspect of why people get back injuries is improper bracing as well.

Matt was deadlifting 801 at birth. He actually got weaker by training deadlifts years later. It's science. You can't argue with science. Don't be a Matt. Only Mike O'hearn walks on water.

To me, as a Bodybuilder at 56 years young. I would say yes, the risk to reward is too high. When I was young I deadlifted a lot and it def. built my back . But now I prefer to stay on the safe side

I'm 52. I've been deadlifting for around 7 yrs. My back is fine. I have never done sumo. My job requires standing and walking all day. I do mixed grip, but I alternate each Rep.

I think deadlifting every other week is the most that I can handle , but not every session I go max effort . Just like Matt said all the other muscles have to be trained other wise for me it feels like I had hit a wall until I started doing some of these back raises or reverse hyper extensions hamstring curls upper back developement seal rows even farmers walk and heavy sand bag for the floor to extension seems to help on off weeks but that’s what help me get past a very long standing sticking point even though it was 11 lbs pr I’m still happy with the results and the journey. Great video

Matt you talk about building strength using nordic curl, ghd etc but what would you use as a safe deadlift variation for max effort day?

I feel like people don’t know how to brace. That’s why the low back is always shit on for people. Teach em how to brace properly and you can pull just about anyway safely

What do you think about mid-high level powerlifters pulling mix grip? Or do you recommend hook? Or is mixed good for guys that have a decent idea of training. I have pulled 675 mixed grip

Matt, I'm a 65 yo lifter. I mostly train for hypertrophy but I also want to be as strong as possible. Especially on the "big three". I deadlift once a week. I'm 160 lbs., and about 11% bodyfat. Just started deadlifting(conventional) less than a year ago. I don't normally do singles but my best deadlift so far is 270 lbs. Obviously I'm not a competitive lifter. Just want to look good and be fit to do the activities I enjoy. Would you advise me to change anything?

Do Maps Anabolic or Maps Powerlift
@edmondwright5589Күн бұрын
@@ho2673 I have already done MAPS anabolic. Doing MAPS aesthetic now for the third time. Great results but that wasn't the point of my comment. Thanks for your reply.

At 6' 180lbs my best DL was 315 for a triple. And I'm not even a very strong guy. I was somewhere around 25% bodyfat back then, this was a year ago. Now I'm around 20% bodyfat and cutting. I guess the question is are you willing to get a little fatter? 11% is a great beach/pool physique. Deadlift is just a number, you already are strong enough.
@edmondwright558913 сағат бұрын
@@K4R3N You're right it is just a number and I do think I'm strong for my size and age. I have weighed as much as 200 lbs. when I was younger and I was a lot stronger. But I wasn't lean. And no, I'm not willing to get fatter. I prefer being lean. I get a lot of compliments on my physique. Thank you for your reply but I think everyone is missing the point. My question was specifically aimed at Matt. He didn't really reply but that's okay. He's a busy guy. Thanks again!

I switch my mix grip between each sets. I heard if you switch your mix grip then it helps balance out the asymmetry. Would that work?

I'm worried about you Dr. Matt....Dead lifts bad/wrong/unnecessary? I've broken my spine in multiple places, and would run Deads, and the many, many variations over Skwat any day, because my spine sucks, so my rump needs to be tip/top, also influencing the chain to keep me in line [mechanically, and neuro- mechanically]. Technique is everything in the Dead, not weight. Until I watched the vid, I was a lil worried about you, big guy. In all truth, the warms, and accessory work [sleds, hypers, belts, rack pulls, shrugs, uprights, rows, good mornings,glute ham raise, viking curl] are much more crucial than running a periodized [aka bullshit] approach to the Dead itself. We know you love the Dead, Matt. I watched you compete back in the day, and I can comfortably state ''Matt in comp, violently loves the Dead.'' Your Dead was as close to flawless, as possible.

Most pro strength coaches in the NFL and D1 colleges, don't allow their athletes to perform straight-bar dls. They allow use of trap-bar dls because they offer less risk-to-reward. Trap-bar dls are safer because they remove the knees as an impediment for the lift, and allow less rounding of the back. Unless you're a powerlifter or strongman the trap-bar is a better choice for everyone else.
@WenningStrengthКүн бұрын
Not exactly correct - in many ways the trap bar is more dangerous
