And the best thing we can do for the environment, is stop buying new stuff and keep the old stuff going that we already have. A bit like what Mike (and many of us) is doing. The cost to the environment to build one of these environmentally friendly cars is horrific.

My thoughts exactly! I did read, many years ago, that a regular car takes 3 times the energy to make it than it will use in its lifetime. I wonder if anyone has calculated the energy to make an EV start to finish?

A recent road test done in Australia, from melb to Sydney with 2 new BMW 7 series....electric version vs the petrol version. The electric version took 2hrs longer to get there, due to having to re-charge and cost A$132 in charge costs. The petrol version cost A$128 in petrol. Surprisingly, this made it to the mainstream news.

HI Mike. I recon that we will all end up driving steam cars, the only problem to solve is how we raise the steam. It will not be by an open fire but by a heat fuel cell which will be lighter than battery's or oil. So get your thinking cap on and solve it quick before we all have to live back in a caves. OH and dont worry about a flat battery as you can always drag a diesel generator around and static charge your motor at the side of the road. I like to ramble while I have a pint in my hand. Couldn't agree more, Mike. Electric vehicles have a place and in many ways makes sense. For a Defender, it's more of a pet project than anything to make economical sense. As for the farmers in Europe, I hope they get justice. They're the backbone of civilization. All around the world, despite the efforts toward the contrary by respective governments, people are finally taking notice and making an effort to stand against what clearly seems to be tyranny. From the farmers in Europe, to Brexit, to Argentina's first libertarian president, to Texas taking a stand against the Feds' lack of responsibility toward borders. I hope it's not too late to allow reason and common sense to take over once again.

Similar situation in Australia. A couple of blokes recently drove small BMWs from Sydney to Melbourne, one electric, one petrol. The petrol car needed one petrol stop which took eight minutes. The electric needed multiple recharging which took over two hours and cost seventeen bucks more than the petrol version. Oh, and the company that makes and services the public chargers has pulled out of Australia. Plus the first electric cement mixer in Australia caught fire in its first week and took days to extinguish. Not a lot going for them here!

@BritannicaRestorations 9 ай бұрын
Yes, I saw the cement mixer - did you see the London bus on fire last week? I forgot to add to the video that if £24,000 would get you 115,000 miles, you would have to charge the EV 1,150 times to do the same distance And didn't I read that the Nullarbor Plain highway had diesel EV chargers?

Before I got my Ninety as a daily driver. I had a Nissan Leaf. It was okay. Of course early electric car. But big range loss in the winter. The heater then failed and the bill to replace was £3,000-£4,000. and it's a well known issue. Newer EV's use better means of heating but still the cost of buying a modern EV is huge. The big issue is, yes you got fewer parts in a way. but each part is worth way way more. And if one goes wrong. you're looking at a big cost.

When my 300tdi finally dies (it’s quite high mileage) it’s going to take $10k to rebuild it. For $15k there is a local company that takes wreaked EV’s and drops all the running gear into old cars.

Couldn't agree more. Electric for larger vehicles just doesn't work with the fixed point recharge approach. Until your vehicle can recharge as it moves along the road surface it's just not practical. I've read that the heavy vehicle manufacturers (JCB etc.) are focused on hydrogen and quite happy with it. I do some volunteer work for a 4x4 Response charity which can involve driving off into the wild blue yonder (well, Dartmoor) and having to limit my journey to 50 miles each way and then waiting for an hour to recharge with search and rescue guys sitting in the back playing Solitaire doesn't seem like a good idea to me.....

I’ve had another thought on Ev if and when we are all forced to change our vehicle, the demand for electricity will be huge. So does that mean we will need to build more power stations and install more transformers stations in residential areas to make the demand. Can you imagine the outcry from the right on nimby’s 😅😅😅 nuclear power here we come 😂

Just think of all the money wasted in building wind turbines that last 20-25 years, the infrastructure and all the solar panels. You could have had many compact nuclear reactors for that money - reliable, and energy 24/7

Hi, I'm with you concerning that electric rubbish the lobby pushes. It is ridicules its electric utopia as John Cadogan a youtuber in Australia calls it. And the worst of all is nobody speaks oft synthetic fuels. Humanity is able to manufacture that, it costs a lot oft electric power, yes and needs water, but in this planet there are spots where you find a lot of sun and a bit of water to make fuel out of solar energy water and CO2 taken out of the air. The advantage is that you can transport it and use it like the petrol. You don't need to change anything on the existing mobility and infrastructure and that is the problem the lobby can't make big money with that.

For the moment yes, but if there will be a mass production the price will go down like with everything on this world and if gouvernements would sponsor this like they sponsor the purchase of EV's here in Europe or make synthetic fuel taxfree that could help. The factories must be in countries near the equator to have enough sun and countries in this regions mostly poor could be sponsored for the construction of such factories for example but thats politics and politics only pretend to protect environments and do it only if their economy can take a profit. I wonder why the Arabs, from where we get most crude oil, still didn't have the idea to invest in future

Pretty much the Defender EV has been built by Munro Vehicles (Scotland) At least, they've built what the Defender could have been - and it aint no Grenadier! Been interesting watching development from the early Mk1 prototypes. Sure EV's are niche, and Canada isn't the niche they'll conquer any time soon; but I wish Munro well, they're pitching in the right price range for more temperate Europe where it should do well. Will it do well? Who knows; EV's and EV Utility vehicles may be the future, but not my future. I might be able to afford one when the LX infrastructure collapses and they put the call out for anyone with old diesel donkeys - then I can charge them an arm and a leg for the services of a draughty 110. There's might be nothing I can to plug it into. but I bet it's easier to retrofit an EV to a Diesel lump than the other way around... Well I don't know... PTO to an old bicycle dynamo and a couple of wires to each wheel motor* or something - do I have to think of everything? 😄 *Yes I know the Munro is direct drive... even easier.

And I support all farmers who are fighting for their survival!! Winter with snow: 4WD is essential. The price initially announced was expensive achievable with sacrifice (69.000€)...now it reaches, "on the continent" 90,291€ for the M170 and €106,925 for the M280! Really (very) too much expensive...😲 Have a good day !

@@Moussavoie Not every location will suit an Electric Vehicle obviously,.and like Canada,. if your winter temperatures are always extreme, it's not suitable. The price for the Munro is reasinable against the price of other electric vehicles in general. It's also purely an utilitarian vehicle, its not for driving about town, and commuting. It's certainly twice the proce of a new L200 But the same price as a new Landrover Defender. Any business with a corporate 'Green' image and ethos,.or Government organisation etc. is going to be taking a close look at the Munro when buying new fleet vehicles. I think that's the market they are pitching to for the moment. Economies of scale, if they can gain some traction (ha!) in the market they may be able to scale production and reduce costs. We'll the market will decide as always. 🍺

Hi Mike I looked into converting my 90 a few years ago, what an absolute joke that was. I’d watch a few videos on KZbin of people who claim to have done the conversions, what they really mean is they were paid by to production companies or something similar to have these land rovers converted, then proceeded to tell us what a great guy they are for converting A land rover to EV . Well I say BOLLOCKS to that. They are lying twats (in my opinion) Most of the company’s claiming to do kits for Land Rover never got back to me , and the one who did reply to me quoted £75.000 as a starting price. He didn’t find it funny when I suggested that he misunderstood my inquiry, that I only wanted a price for a kit , not to buy a converted car. It’s unfair to LR enthusiasts to be misled by presenters claiming to be one of us.

Completely agree, total con by gov and big business. I did a rough calculation, it's hard to be accurate as so many variables and the figures are hard to get but running my old D90, I avg 28mgp (11.92 km/l) and I do under 6k miles a year, so its at least 11.5 years just to pay back the manufacture of the new vehicle, when you then calculate the difference in CO2 produced by the landie and a new hybrid its more like 25 years and I think my landie is more likely to still be running in 25 years than a new hybrid. so in short I'll be probably dead before new hybrid or electric is more environmentally friendly than my old diesel. So best option to help the environment is keep my old diesel running. I do agree that there is a big climate issue that must be addressed but selling us new crap just isn't the way. There is a place for electric and hybrids ( thinking local delivery, e.g. milk floats etc) but also synthetic fuel and hydrogen. As you say its all geared to making more profit for the already rich and not addressing the issue. Farmers can make huge changes and are trying to do so but they need support and funding, not hitting with crippling taxes and supermarkets ripping them off. rant over, time to refit my electric winch 🤣

A regular domestic vehicle had a 'life' of 9 years - after that, a manufacture was no longer obliged to supply spares, whereas Volvo, just kept going, and I did read that they received the same amount back as the initial purchase price, in spares and servicing over the car's lifetime

On that note, a ev Landrover is not an economically viable solution, no overland vehicle is for now. Just as it would have been useless to build a diesel horse way back when. I did consider to build a RR ev, for laughs and giggles, but no kit, source and build everything myself. Not too difficult but completely useless😂. As for European farmers, i know a few.. not much going on apart from that they need clear rules from the government, and the cartel power of the huge distribution companies needs to be broken. They are the evil ones, not the farmers. The gov has been sleeping and letting things turn into a profit grabbing, lobbying horror. We need to give the controls back to the farmers.
