After riding in a Model 3 performance, I shared Alanis' same concern that people who never drove anything faster than 9 sec to 60 all of a sudden are in something that's way faster and are more at risk of causing an accident. It was nice hearing someone else say it

My boss, an old mason in his 60s who has always driven slow diesel work trucks, recently got in an accident and totaled his late 90s truck. He went to a Ford dealership to test out a Ford F150 Lightning, and he was used to the slow build of power in a diesel not the immediate power of an electric drive train so he pressed the pedal almost to the floor expecting to chug gears for a few minutes like in an ICE. NOPE, the thing rocketed to 60+ mph in the blink of an eye, so fast his head flew back and cracked on the head rest giving him minor whiplash. He said that was one of the only times he's felt immediate fear while driving. That's exactly the point Alanis is illustrating. New drivers who are growing up with the faster powertrain of an electric car will be fine, but we'll have significant overlap with older folks who only know ICEs who are going to be a menace in these cars. My prediction? We're going to eventually have a lawsuit of some kind and car makers are going to start putting software lock out limiters on the acceleration curve of electric cars to make them mimic a normal ICE.

As a model 3 performance owner I completely agree. I rarely if ever bury the petal because you will break the speed limit of a freeway faster than you can probably react to a situation. I love it but will always be careful passing on the highway. Even with the plateau in performance above 80mph, it’s still pulling around 300hp at its lowest output.

@@te86aAltima owners are typically born due to the systems at place. We have poor law enforcement for distracted driving/road laws and poor enforcement of driver education. Driver education is a 2 fold issue, you have traffic being jammed up by bad drivers, and then the Altima owners blow your doors off trying to navigate through them in a poor manor with a lack of skill. All of these issues, even including the Electric far too fast issue, would be resolved by driver education and harsher penalties for distracted driving and road laws IMO, such as left-lane for passing only, etc.

It is so refreshing for legit "car people" to be having this discussion. I want a fun car, but I also want it to be efficient and good quality. I don't need my hatchback to be capable of reaching 200mph or beating a Demon from a stoplight. And your average driver, and young drivers, really should not have that much power.

I think a big part that is missed by many automotive reviewers when it comes to this topic is location. If you live in an area with access to nice curvy roads, yes, slow car fast = fun. but if you live in an area with nothing but long straight flat roads (thinking Florida), slow car fast is boring. You need a fast car to have any fun. Its like comparing a fun track car to a fun drag car. You can have a fun track car that is slow but you need a fast car to have a fun drag car. I don't think you need a car with a high top speed (doesn't hurt tho) but you need something with good acceleration to have fun on straight roads.

My last couple of cars have been 370-380hp and i honestly think that's borderline too fast for the road. If you're 'enjoying them' in a legal way you're at the top of second or sometimes into third, you don't get much chance to go through the gears and you've got like 2 or 3 seconds of foot to the floor before you're well over the speed limit. Slow car fast is the way.

I agree with Alanis. I've got a 625hp supercharged 2010 Camaro and honestly, I'll NEVER be able to use it to its fullest, outside of a track. But it's my daily driver. I've got gigantic tires, reworked the suspension and brakes. It's damn-near as good as it gets for a daily, but the power still overwhelms and is only good at running down other cars on long freeway stretches. It would be a better car, all around, with 100hp less, tbh. And most people can't even handle a 250hp car.

90% of what makes daily cars great is simply the freedom; that feeling you had when you got your license and that first car (plus a radio and working A/C or heat). The other 10% comes from a car that's fun to drive. 0-60 in 5-6 seconds is a sweet spot, but it's more about steering and handling.

I had more fun and memorable drives in my old Gen 4&5 Preludes than I did in my 987 Cayman S. It only had about 315 HP with some light mods but I really couldn't responsibly use it anywhere beyond a corner or two when the second gear redline was above 70 mph. I'd get another but the Preludes were more fun. I could feel like I was driving them above 80% all day. I don't know if I ever did in the Porsche. And they Cayman is now considered "slow," while it was as fast as a top dog Testarossa that I lusted for in the 80s. Last week I had a Tesla launch from my right blind spot. I've been to dozens of F1 and Indycar races, and I've never seen anything accelerate that fast. Never mind that it was 100% silent. Dude had to take to the shoulder to keep from hitting another car about 100 yards ahead of us. I feel I know what I'm doing and wouldn't know what to do with that speed. After seeing that, I was like yeah, govern that acceleration. We aren't trained well enough to handle that, much less expect it from outside the car as a third person. If I see that Tesla 100 yards away, I'll never expect it to be in my space in 2 seconds.

As someone who has raced cars in my younger days, I sincerely think the drivers are a bigger issue than the vehicle HP. The average driver is simply not prepared or skilled enough to deal with a car accelerating at these speeds, or handle a car when it approaches 100mph. When I see people driving on wet pavement in excess of 60-65mph I back away, because it is clear they have no understanding of what hydroplaning is and they are a danger to themselves and others.

As someone who got to drive a 550hp car as the third non-driving-school car ever - that is, before I even had my own car (and that was 10+ years ago when they weren't everywhere) ... it's definitely a driver thing. Most modern supercars aren't any more difficult to drive than a stock Corolla ... just don't floor them and you're good. Stick to accelerating at the same rate as you would with your aunt's Toyota, and nothing *too* interesting happens.

how much is 'wet' pavement? Because would it be correct to understand that you would back away when it's raining on the highway from anyone? 6:12 I'm with Alanis on that point, because I think cars are inducing confidence cheques that the driver's abilities can't cash. I am in my 50's and my first car with abs was a 5-year-old Peugeot 406. So I have had way more vehicles that have had no nannying for the driver so I knew when my car was going to lose traction I knew how to use Cadence braking as ABS was an option I either couldn't afford or it was just not available. So I remember the bad old days, new drivers have a level of confidence they have not earned and that frightens me. It's not their fault it's just that the car is doing more for them and when you add hundreds of horsepower that becomes dangerous. I believe they should restrict the power and top speed of cars for novice drivers of any age, it would be easily done with the technology we have now you could have the car do a simple biometric scan on the steering wheel and cut down the power if the kid was driving the parents car and everything is unrestricted if a parent is driving it would be as easy done as a memory seat option. My point is that we need to be responsible and teach drivers how to handle cars with such high torque and horsepower I see cars with 10x more hp than a seriously quick car had back when I was growing up over here in Scotland. I love the new format guys and girl It's way more relaxed than I thought it would be and it's allowing all your personalities to shine. All the best from Scotland.

@nirfz 11 ай бұрын
I'm in my 40's and i too remember non ABS times. And while i understand the "power limit for certain ages" argument, i don't think it would help much. There are people our age that can't bring their brain to the realization that traction control and stability control won't cheat physics. So it's not just an age thing. As bad as it sounds i think driving (operating the car) needs to be more difficult than it is today. When people are occupied with driving the damn thing, they won't get distracted so easily. And when they raelize how easily tires can slip with high hp and torque, and need to learn to deal with an emergency braking situation without ABS they might have a better feeling for the actual physical situation they are in while driving. How we could achieve that i don't really know. I could imagine putting people in cars without traction, stability or anything else-control as well as without ABS every year or 2 years on a slippery surface and let them try.

I'm driving an Ecoboost Ford Maverick with 250bhp and 275lb/ft of torque, and combined with the 8-speed auto, it's more than quick enough to get 16-year-old me killed. From a sports car perspective, I think there will always be that engineering *need* to produce bigger numbers, and most of those buyers probably are going to track them or otherwise "collect" them, but the trickle-down effect is what's more concerning. When used cars that first-time buyers purchase start having 300-500 horsepower, it's going to get dangerous for people not accustomed to breaking all four wheels loose when you punch it out of a corner.

Something to keep in mind: with all electric cars, the size of the battery pack almost directly correlates to how much power you have. That battery is 2-3x the cost of the motor and power electronics, so making a slow EV isn’t that much less expensive than making a fast EV with the same pack.

You're _kind of_ right. You can't have a great deal of performance in an EV without a big battery, but you don't _have_ to pair a big battery with a big motor. There is nothing stopping manufacturers from using a 100KWH battery with a very reasonable 250HP motor. I suspect this doesn't happen for 2 reasons: 1. Because of what you said: the batteries cost so damn much, so it's hard to convince anyone to spend $40K+ on a vehicle that takes a long time to refill. You need to offer something extra, and it doesn't really add too much cost or weight to make the motor a _lot_ more powerful. 2. Batteries are _HEAVY._ Sometimes they just need that extra power to deal with the weight. It's just... they don't need 450HP in a crossover. Once battery prices and weight come down, I think we'll start seeing more reasonable HP numbers.

The problem with horsepower is that you get used to it too quickly. I find myself tailgating cars without wanting to. When you get used to the acceleration and you never drive slower/normal cars anymore, you forget that it isn't normal to hit 100kph in no time at all. I drive a (heavy) Polestar with 480hp and a (light) Porsche with almost 400hp. Both do about the same 0-100 kph but in the Polestar you hardly feel it. No noise, no vibrations. I've always been a really careful driver but now with these cars I'm learning to slow down and be more considerate of others on the road. Not blaming the cars though! I blame myself for buying them and not properly realizing they are in a whole different league than most cars on the road and I have to adjust to that.

To me, the EV range vs. acceleration discussion is similar to the manual vs. automatic (in a sports car) discussion. The automatic is definitely quicker for acceleration and on the track. But if you’re not always at the track, the engagement of the manual is more fun every day. 3 pedals make even a drive to the grocery store more enjoyable.

I completely agree that a 600hp, 5000lb crossover is scary considering what kind of car a would be owner is coming from. However, enthusiasts tend to not use 100% of the loud pedal 100% of the time, so having 400hp+ doesn't necessarily matter as much until you can exploit it safely.

The truly scary part of the typical ev right now is their weight. That speed potential and the massive amount of weight along with it really places other road users in a dangerous situation. The force of a 60mph crash is 4x that of a 30mph crash. The more mass traveling at that speed is just more force. The reality of a great many cars on the road being 4000lbs+ then becomes pretty terrifying.

While not a super high amount, it's still surprising how many people have asked me if I'm going to put a turbo or supercharger in my 420HP V8 R8. My answer always is: "Never say never, but considering I don't track it, I can't see what more fun I can get from a 700HP car than what I can get in my 400HP one." Never driven anything faster than my R8 but from personal observation on how quick and easy it is to break the speed limit in this, I don't really see the point. Glad to see that this isn't just me being a horsepower prude or something and others feel the same way.

I think there's another factor here they touched on, with non-sport cars, you also have to consider the traffic around you and the speed of traffic, going "Too slow" in traffic is also a hazard, so if everyone around you is doing 80 and you're doing 30, you become a hazard, even if the speed limit is only 30. It's not your fault, but it makes it so that even low performance cheap cars have to be able to keep up, its kinda sad in a way as it encourages people to speed.

@@nahidhassan7987 Speed limit dude. Also, you've clearly never been in poverty and had a car for $400 that barely runs. Going faster than 30-35 in my first car was scary AF because the thing was ready to fall apart. The frame was basically dust from being rusted out (Yay rust belt) and it was also 30 years old. But I digress, you missed the point, it was an example, if you're merging onto the highway, and speeds at 80+ and your car takes over a minute to get to 60, you're probably merging at 30-40. Its unsafe, but some cars from about 10-15 years ago just can't keep up, even at full throttle.

The issue for me is that vehicles in North America are wayyyy oversized nowadays, they're just too heavy, and have awful visibility compared to older vehicles. Smooshing high speed, weight, size, poor visibility together and tossing the keys to the average driver is concerning to say the least.

@@donwilber1628 Roads are filled with crazy heavy and large vehicles more than ever before. Yes, Americans made some large vehicles in the 60s and 70s, but even then it was a niche market, and they were usually coupes and sedans with good visibility, and less traffic on the road to hit. Plus, the rest of the world was smaller, and even in USDM there were smaller vehicles available, where now there are almost no reasonably sized vehicles. The significantly increased weight and diminished visibility of the majority of vehicles today is a big problem now. Getting hit by 2023 SUV is a lot different than getting hot my a 1996 Civic, (and in 1996 there weren't many SUVs, so you were more likely to get hit by a Civic)

We have large vehicles because we're a large country with large cities and large highways. We don't need to squeeze into tiny hatchbacks to putter around our thousand-year-old cities. My truck has great visibility because it sits up high. I like being able to look over smaller vehicles and see what's down the road. As far as speed goes, it's easy. Don't use all of the accelerator.

As an Aussie I'm glad you brought up the topic of license restrictions for young drivers. I find it crazy that in many parts of the world a young/inexperienced driver can purchase a hugely powerful vehicle. With riding it's even worse. The fact someone can purchase a 1600+ cc Harley with virtually no riding experience is nuts. There is, however, something we are very poor at - driver training and testing. Motorcycle licenses aside (the training and testing for this license class is actually fairly good), car licenses are basically a low-speed & parking test. This is a huge problem in such as vast country where a lot of travel takes place on highways/motorways. People are not trained or tested with regards to high speed driving. You only need to spend 5 minutes on a high speed road to see the problems this causes. Our roads and modern cards are easily capable of supporting higher speed limits (highways tend to be 110km/h [~70mph]), it's driver skill that's the problem.
