My skin improved greatly when I started including plain Greek yogurt into my diet, regularly. I also started taking Dr Formulated Probiotics for mood. The combination of gut and mental health has undoubtedly supported healthier, less inflamed, skin for me! Although, it did take at least 6 months for me to really start to see sustainable change. To add: I would not recommend drinking Kombucha for a primary source of probiotics. These drinks tend to be high in sugar-- which for me, has caused inflammation in the past.

My skin greatly benefitted from SK-II Treatment Essence - more of a pre-biotic, as it is a ferment, but anyways: great results! Much less acne, the pimples are far less deep, take a much shorter time to surface, and in turn, now I have really nice skin, after 15 years of acne :) I think Missha also has some fermented toner that is cheaper (not actually cheap). Have also tried the SK-II Clear Lotion, and don't recommend it - the effect is not the same as with the essence.

I started taking probiotics because I suffered for more than two decades with ulcerative colitis-making it difficult to maintain my body weight as well as keeping me in a state of anemia. I also suffered from eczema during this time. The first clue I received that indicated an improvement in my health was a healing of the bleeding eczema behind my ears (which had been quite painful). It actually took a couple of weeks, taking probiotics with each meal, before the bleeding of my colon lessened-and never resumed!! One of the individual probiotics I always look for in a probiotic product is “rhamnosus” (as well as acidophilus and the better known varieties). Rhamnosus is good for the immune system, and is NOT included in most probiotic preparations, so you really have to read labels to make sure you are looking at a product that contains a wide variety of strains!

I recently started taking a fiber supplement on the advice of my doctor to improve digestion. One unexpected side effect has been that my skin is actually consistently clear for the first time in my adult life. Turns out fiber is considered a "prebiotic" (not probiotic) because it apparently nourishes and supports the "good bacteria" that may be already present in your gut. Fascinating. To be fair I'm still inclined to think that most supplements are pure unfiltered marketing....

Thank you for covering this. I just quit taking Hum skin probiotic formula a couple of days ago because I think it was making me worse. Most probiotics are inflammatory for anyone with *histamine intolerance,* like I have, because so many strains produce histamine. I can only take "low histamine" probiotics, but I have no idea what, if anything, they're doing for me. I don't see any change in my skin or histamine condition for taking them. I know I have gut disbiosis; I took 2 Thorne gut tests in the last 1.5 years that say so, anyway. After fasting (IF and prolonged) and eating ridiculously clean for a year my test came back WORSE. I'm discouraged at best. Oh, and I thought any probiotic blend that said it was to reduce inflammation in the skin wouldn't produce histamine but I think I was wrong based on the result.

But I don't think there was really any research on probiotics and the intestinal flora in the 90's with eczema patients. Fast forward 20 years I developed IBS-C at 21. I had it really bad for about 2 years, but it's gradually improved with every year with a combo of consistent probiotic use and lifestyle changes. But definitely not overnight

I've had bad acne since puberty (I'm 35 now) and a few years ago one dermatologist suggested dairy as a cause. I try to lower my dairy intake to a minimum especially since the pandemic began, because wearing a mask makes my breakouts 10 times worse. Recently I went through a 4 week elimination diet to fix my intestinal flora and it was the first time in my adult life that I had clear skin without antibiotics. The diet called for probiotic supplements and probiotic rich foods like sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir and kombucha, which I ate keeping some days in between each. 2 days after having yogurt my face was covered in cysts. I added the kefir later because why not, and it got worse. Sauerkraut and kombucha didn't have a visible effect. I was hoping that this reset would help my acne, but sadly it didn't.

I’m using the Vichy 89 Probiotic Fractions serum which I really like. This product is said to increase “skin immunity” which for me as acne prone makes it worthwhile to test it out. Ofc I don’t know if this term came from a marketing department etc but I decided to support the product just because I keep hearing dermatologist refer to acne as a disease nowadays, so I’m always like, if it’s a disease than why isn’t my immune system taking care of it? Lol. Anyways it also has niacinamide in it which I love… I hope companies and labs keep investing in pre/pro/postbiotics, it does seem promising.

I recently started using this as well. I have been using Vichy’s other serum 89 with HA for a couple years and my skin loves it. I don’t know if the serum with probiotics is doing anything different, but so far so good. I use 89 HA in the mornings under my make up. And use the probiotic one at night under my thicker night time moisturizer.

I eat some probiotic foods and they don't do anything wonderful per se, but they are easier to digest than highly processed foods or fast food. They tend to be a part of many traditional diets. Pickles are easier to eat because they are fermented, cucumbers are pretty hard.

I just started making my own sauerkraut and fermented veggies. I’ve been consuming them daily for about a week, and I stopped breaking out. I just started my period also, so about a week prior is when I started eating my probiotic rich foods. I’m blown away actually. I breakout daily, always on my chin area. I’m going to continue eating it daily and see how my skin behaves after my cycle as well. Note, I have not been eating the cleanest outside of my sauerkraut. I’ve still consumed some candy (highly inflammatory for me usually), cheese, and some processed foods. I highly recommend you make your own fermented foods rather than buy a supplement . It’s easy and WAY cheaper! I’ll try and remember to provide an update on my comment, about 3 weeks later so I can say for sure this isn’t some coincidence.

Thank you for posting this video very helpful! I had a stool test done where it showed I didn't have any growth of lactobacillus, no yeast issues. My issue is hormonal acne chin jaw line area (I'm a female in my 40s) (I've cut out dairy a long time ago, i don't eat alot of sugar). My hormones are for the most part decent (male ones where tested and they are in good ranges for the most part). Do you think taking probiotics would help with my acne? Or first try to eat probiotic rich foods then see if that works, if not then move to supplements probiotics wise?

Hi Dr. Dray! I've recently switched from Cerave Hydrating Cleanser to the Cerave Hydrating Bar to reduce plastic. I found quite a lot of difference between the cleanser and the bar, even though I think the ingredients are the same. Could you do a review of facial cleansing bars? Maybe compare Vanicream and Cerave and some others? I'm worried about the fragrance in Cerave's bar as well as the "film" left behind. It also seems to be drying.

I've been taking just a kids probiotic and I think it's been helping keep my UTIs at bay (I got them monthly for 2 years straight). I can't say I've noticed a difference in my skin. Honestly if anything it looks a little worse.

I’m sure you’ve already explored every avenue, but just in case, have you been checked for interstitial cystitis? I was misdiagnosed as having chronic mysterious UTIs (typical E. Coli tests were always negative) for like 6 years. Took insane amounts of antibiotics that contributed to autoimmune disease and turned out to be unnecessary. I just want to shout this from the rooftops because so many women go through this. I’m so sorry you have and I wish you all the best.

@@ashleyeayers I recently went to a urologist and she gave me an antibiotic that I hadn't heard of before. It took care of my most recent UTI and so far it hasn't come back in a few months. We think I have small kidney stones that contribute to the pain though.

You may have been taking a too strong a dose of probiotics. Me for example I can’t take any probiotic that’s above 5 billion active cultures or it starts to give me negative side effects but any that’s 5 billion and under works wonderful for me.

I tend to think at this point that probiotics is a worthy investment if you have gut issues. I wonder if the acute pancreatitis issue is just an issue because the body can't regulate bacteria as well as it should? That seems like it is a very critical time for the body and I'm not entirely surprised it was a negative result.

Hi there and thanks I'm researching probiotic skincare and internal care after having MRSA seemingly contaminating our water supply here in Irving, Texas I'd do just about anything to prevent MRSA from ever holding every space in my body again, so it looks like live culture skin products may be a very good idea. Know anything about nitrosomas eutropha?

Have you tried incorporating prebiotics? PRObiotics is the good bacteria but your stomach needs PREbiotics for the probiotics to do good. Prebiotics stimulates the growth and uptake of probiotics so they’re both needed. So maybe that’s why you’re not noticing any differences 😚

Is ectoine a probiotic? Recently I've been using ectoine allergy drops in my eyes to help with itchy eyes and had been considering using it in an cream to help treat my irritated seb derm. The available literature seemed to say that ectoine worked via supporting bacteria, but I wasn't sure if it was saying it was probiotic? The eye drops are helping me stop itching, but I hadn't come across the ingredient before. The claims seem very positive but I'm not clear on its mechanism.

I eat Greek yogurt each day for the protein. I have super sensitive skin and nothing seems to help. This past August I was diagnosed with perioral dermatitis and after 2 months of antibiotics and topical treatments, the visible signs were gone however I now have itching in my scalp, eyebrows, ears, neck, chin, cheeks, below the eyes and chest. My derm gave me rx shampoo and a vanicream z bar. I'm really miserable and pray something lets up soon.
