As a customer, i can tell that this video is 100% legit ! You've summarized perfectly pros and cons, that's a good video sir ! If someone saw this video and is still not convinced, i'm gonna tell about my experience with my Landroid. I've purchased one last year and it works pretty damn well. I was not convinced at first glance, like he said in his video. "C'mon how those little blades cutting just a few millimeters would actively mow my yard ?" "How does a randomised pathfinding would work ? i'll have have some parts of my yard mowed and others not !" And well i was both right and wrong. I've got an 1800 yd² terrain and sometimes, as i expected, not every parts are mowed properly. However, the solution is very simple, since the only thing to do is to make it works longer ! 4 hours a day, 6 day a week and my lawn is mowed everywhere without any disproportion. But yeah, only real problem is price, as you said, a bit too much expensive, i can't argue with that. So if anyone can afford it, don't worry, it works fine, as long as you've followed installation instructions and upkeeping advices.

Back in 2007, I installed a Lawnbott brand which is the American-branded version of the Italian Ambrogio company. I chose this because it claimed to do slopes well. Back then, there were not many models on the market. Lawnbott fit the bill. In my case, I needed a solution to my elderly mother's lawn. She lived way out in the countryside and there was no one around to even hire to mow the lawn. I had zero experience with these units but I did my homework and took the chance. It works great, to this day. It's been serviced over the years with improved motors and an additional battery. We have two zones and have it on full-automatic with only some time restrictions. We don't mow before 10:00 a.m. because we live in an area where there is a lot of dew on the grass in the morning and mowing wet grass is never good. Otherwise, it runs all the time, even at night with its blinking light. Installation was a chore because we had two zones and more than an acre of lawn to deal with. While I was aware of a "trenching" device, I had no idea it existed on a small scale. In retrospect, I should have thought about the installation of invisible dog fences but it didn't occur to me. Thus, it took all weekend and 3 people to lay the wire by hand. But, once done, it was over. The mower, as you said, does a great job. Even with falling leaves, the mower mulched those. The lawn looks like a putting green and we use it more these days because there's no grass to track into the house. I am very impressed. Now, true enough - not cheap. I believe my unit, back in 2007 was close to $2,700.00. But, maintenance has been minimal and there no gas or oil to buy. Electricity supposedly in $10 for the season. I have no complaints. I did have to chuckle. Mom made the local newspaper with photographs of her sitting in a lawn chair while the mower did its thing. Mom's older male friends would come over, see this, shake their heads, and remember how many years they pushed a mower around! It was such a novelty at the time that locals would stop and watch it mow. I printed up a fact-sheet to hand out to those interested, as I was asked the same questions all the time. I know the new stuff has many improvements. When ours finally wears out, I will certainly buy another one. Thanks for the video! An excellent explanation. BTW, in all these years, I've never seen another robotic mower in action! I think they are pretty rare, at least in my area.

I had the Landroid on order when I discovered iRobot Terra, it was still set to be released so I canceled my Landroid and was waiting but within a few days iRobot made announcement to cancel the Terra due to Covid lockdowns. Man was I bummed. The Tara has some really compelling features, the remote control and the wireless boundaries were the two features I most looking forward to using… One with hand remote control lawnmower, as I said I’m a gardener and some parts of my yard have some tricky spots that may need maneuvering with the remote or training the robot to get into those areas that the wireless boundary markers cannot detect. Anyway, I seriously hope iRobot get their act together and is able to release the terra lawnmower, if not… sell the idea to a different company that can.

We’ve had a Gardena robomower for just over 6 years. It’s great! Just have to weedwhacker the edges every now and then. Maybe replace the blades twice or trice a year. But other than that, haven’t needed any maintenance at all, haven’t even cleaned it. Our neighbor has one too, they had to replace the battery after 5 years, easy repair, you order the battery, it arrives, you undo a few screws, swap the battery, screw it back together, and it works just like new. Well worth the price, durable and all replacement parts are easily available and rather cheap.

@Trainboy1EJR4 жыл бұрын
The Huskevarna ones are $3,500, this is $1000, so the price has come down, but with so few players in the American market, it doesn't make sense to make it any cheaper until we have a few dozen brands to buy from. Then of course there is the Landscaping Lobby, because its America, and we can't be losing jobs to machines XD. All jokes aside, how many do you see in your town, there isn't a single one here, and it costs money to make a product, and it it isn't sold in high volume, it will cost more. I mow at maximum deck height, so I only have to mow once every 2-3 weeks on average, 5 times so far this year, I'll only have to mow 2 more times. At 1.5 hours to mow, thats only 11 hours a year. If I value my time at $10 a hour, thats only $110 of value I'd be getting out of a robot mower. Compare that to vacuuming at 15 minutes a day, or 91 hours a year, and a Roomba will be $910 of value. Picked up an E6 for $250, set it to run daily, floors have never been cleaner. Still have to take 30 seconds a day to clear the rollers of 20" hair, but that's only 3 hours a year I actually have to "vacuum". Technically still need to hit the edges once a month with the Shark so 4 hours a year, for a total of 7 hours a year vacuuming, down from 91. But considering most people don't value their free time... $250 / 84 hours = $2.97 for an hour of free time, and surely an hour of free time is worth that much.

Great video, thanks for posting. When robotic vacuums first came out (Roomba by iRobot), they randomly bounced around too (mindless wall bangers), then somebody noticed that was very inefficient, took way longer to vacuum the house due to repeatedly going back over areas that had already been cleaned, meaning batteries had to have many more charge cycles, and unnecessary excessive wear. Then Neato came out with their version that actually navigated intelligently around so it would get done faster, do a better job cleaning, with many less charge cycles and less wear and tear. Anyhow, once Neato showed everybody how it was done, navigating robot vacuums then became the defacto standard method of cleaning. (please pardon me if I got the history wrong, never researched it, I'm just citing this from my own personal experience using robotic vacuums.) I kind of see the robotic lawnmower as being along that same path of evolution. I feel you were spot on when you questioned in your video the longevity of the current generation of robotic lawnmowers because of all the mindless duplication of work going back over areas that have already been cut. It is that very issue that has kept me from making the investment into the robotic lawnmower technology. Regarding the claim that robotic lawnmowers that can navigate will make wear path's and trails in the yard and that is why the manufacturers opted for random operation, I say BS. It is not that hard to add a level of randomness to navigation code that insures the robot's shift over a little bit this way and that in the paths enough to prevent those hard tracks from occurring. I feel the real reason the random element is used is to accelerate the wear cycle so they wear out faster and boost repeat sales. Since I don't share your enjoyment of cutting the yard (much dislike but I'm also a cheapskate so I still cut it), this has motivated me to clean out my workshop out back I have been using for junk storage and get back to tinkering with and developing robotic lawnmowers, it is something of a quest I think will be fun, and since my wife will know where I am I'll stay out of trouble too. :) Cheers!

I know what you mean! I had like the first romba and it did that exactly 🤦🏾♀️ this works alot better than that however I have a more imperfect yard with dips , holes,dirt patches, old plastic border, and it does dig into the dirt and get stuck occasionally. I just pick it up and move it. It goes a different direction every time it comes off the docking station. Eventually the whole yard gets cut. But in the beginning I watched it with a critical eye like u missed a spot and I hope you go back and get the huge weed u just went over and missed.😂 But after using it for 2 weeks the grass it has maintained low. Oh of course I bought mine used on Craigslist for $500

@@zfran5059 Thanks for the Craiglist tip, I've been watching Facebook Market, but I still haven't seen any for sale. I have watched quite a few videos on KZbin and it seems most of the yards I see them bouncing around in, have already been cut, I wish there were more where we could actually see a difference is grass height when it cuts the grass. I've read if the grass is too high, you need to cut it with your old gas mower before releasing your new robotic mower on it, probably because to limit the amount of damage it could possibly do should it get into something it shouldn't, it is purposely made less powerful than it would need to be to handle high tough grass. Hopefully soon we will see some company come out with a smart mower that really is smart and powerful and doesn't have to babied so much.

@@TurpInTexas well we cut our grass first but it rained soon after that it started to grow. So we had very tall pieces of weeds and because the wheels will run over long pieces and other parts of the machine will go over it but it won't cut it but eventually the blade will go over it and cut it. Hey maybe I'll do my back yard it's really tall and make a video *don't hold your breath though*. But I'm so tempted to throw my extra wire on the back yard to see if will cut my tall grass. But I haven't tried it yet

Great balanced review. I think another advantage is they are really quiet and you can schedule them to mow at night so it doesn’t get in the way of kids playing etc during the day? Apparently they work in the rain too?
@SilverCymbal4 жыл бұрын
You can cut in the rain but during my tests it makes a mess on the robot and needs to be cleaned so its best to let the sensor stop it from raining and it can delay as well to make sure the grass is dry. They are SUPER quiet. I let it mow during the day since it barely makes any noise.

I have a small 127m2 lawn - mostly weeds - in a garden that I am away from most of the time as my house is in France and I currently have to spend most of my time in England. 4 months ago I installed one of these to try to keep the weeds under control while I am away and I have to say that so far I am very impressed! I am aware that the manufacturers don't encourage using the landroid while unattended but life's not that simple as we all know and I think they would do well to maybe try to cater to remote users by adding a user override on the app to take control after it has gone into outside of wire lockdown, even after it has shut down, and directional controls to the app to try to get it back within the wire should it stray - assuming the user has visual CCTV contact as I do! My lawn is small but pretty uneven with a pronounced slope off around 2 sides and a fallen tree in one corner which is the main obstacle. I ran the guide wire on an isolated loop around this tree from the get go as I figured this would be prudent to keep the droid from getting stuck in the deep holes around the base and v-branch cul-de-sac at the other end. However, this has thrown up the only snag to my cunning plan in that if the droid goes into return to home mode automatically and hits the isolated circuit around the tree first it will just keep going around the tree in edge mode until it gets stuck. I don't know for sure if it will work out that it's on a separate loop and go looking for the outer wire circuit because it gets stuck in one of those holes I mentioned first. But that is the ONLY time it has got stuck so far and I now have 147 hours on the clock. I already had a CCTV system on my garden but I upgraded the existing static mute camera to PTZ with sound and added a second for full coverage. So now I can see and hear when the weather is good to set the droid off manually and keep an eye on it. I am now confident that there is no need to watch it while it's mowing but after 3 hours on a 4000mah battery it's time to call it home so I watch for when it's approaching the outer ring and hit the home button on the app. On the 4000mah battery sometimes it can go up to 4 hours and other times it will barely make 3 so it appears to vary the charge amount on a cycle which is why I need to keep an eye on it after 2 hours to make sure. Next spring I will re install the guide wire taking in more of the lawn now that I know what it can cope with and miss out the fallen tree. For that I guess I will need to get the OFF LIMITS kit. It does have the anti collision eyes so I might try that first to see how it goes. Hopefully then I will be able to leave it to run itself fully autonamously confident that it won't get stuck anywhere. Once on CCTV I watched it get caught up in overhanging brambles that had grown out since I last left the place. It was tugging back and forth and I thought for sure it would give up, but it just kept pulling, reversing, pulling one way, reversing pulling another over and over until eventually it was free. I have seen it get stuck in a couple of places on the lawn and work itself free, it's very tenacious! It also seems to learn as it hasn't got stuck in those places lately. So a lesson there is to make sure that anything likely to grow and overhang while you are away should be mercilessly cut back. Also, when it's really dry and the droid is in edge mode it will slide sideways on the one edge of the lawn a noticeable distance but it keeps going until it reacquires the wire and gets back on track. My garden is next to a road but has a high wall so not easily accessible for anybody with ill intent. In anycase the droid has built in security including a PIN - make sure to change it from default!! - to turn it on and an alarm which sounds and sends an app notification if picked up. This would make it not a lot of use as it stands to a would be theif but someone might decide to help themselves to the battery. One really good thing about the landroid from a security point of view is that it is so quiet it doesn't announce itself to the neighbourhood from an enclosed garden even when running. I hope to make a video about it on my channel probably early next year but in the meantime I can thoroughly recommend!

As far as the lawn striping goes, I feel like there is a pretty simply software solution to this. Given that the mower has GPS and physical boundary detection via the cable, as well as the optional radar, it should be able to quite easily build a digital map of your yard. Not only would this allow for striping, but it could also be use to optimize the mower's path to reduce mowing time.
