It is sad but true. My son is biracial and my daughter is not. People always make a point to mention how handsome my son and his hair is and overlook my daughter. I always make it a point to say that I'm blessed with 2 beautiful children. Then they agree like "oh yeah, your daughter is pretty too". Get the heck outta here with that bull! People can be so shallow and self loathing. It's stupid.

Well, you got it half of it right. Let me rephrase it. Being "light" doesn't make you pretty, and being "dark" doesn't make you ugly. What makes you beautiful is how the features of your face is arranged regardless if you have European or ethnic features.

Do people not understand that a mixed just doesn't mean mixed with white. Any two raced can mix, and people don't get that mixed isn't necessarily light skin, green/hazel eyes, and curly hair. A mixed child can be dark skin "nappy hair" and dark eyes.

Exactly, I am mixed with Filipino and Spanish, although I just say I'm black and identify as black, since my parents both have Black in them, my dad is a half, but he still considered himself a black man. Anywho, I just wanna say that I have light brown skin, but my hair is not all loose and flowy, it's just normal curly and my eyes are brown, plus my sister is darker skinned and her hair is looser and waiver than mine, although she is darker, mixed people come in all shades and hair textures. We are not all biracial with White! Also all light skinned people aren't necessarily mixed. So I don't think the topic should be "Stop fetishisizing mixed children" and instead "Stop fetishisizing stereotypical mixed children"

Thank you. Glad someone finally said it. My mom is light skinned and my dad is dark skinned. people always approach me asking "What are you?". I tell them Black, and they ask "What else?". To that I reply "BLACK, AFRICAN AMERICAN, NEGRO, etc." and they laugh.

I ran into a post on Facebook today about Blue Ivy being compared to North West and in the comment section below, our own black women were being very very negative towards Blue Ivy. Never-mind who her parents are. That was uncalled for. Some women were writing saying, North West is cuter, which is fine but to say Blue Ivy has an ugly father, her hair is bad, she doesn't look like Beyoncé, she never has her hair combed, North West is lighter, more beautiful, good silky hair, we were expecting Blue to look like a light skinned baby with soft wavy hair and light eyes. It was just....absolutely disgusting to read so much negativity. Blue is a brown girl. Her parents are both black. Her hair is in its natural texture and it's their right to keep it that way. This is what we looked like as brown girls coming up. Get over it. So because she's not light skinned, her hair not silky, she's not beautiful? What does it matter? I can't understand why people are so hateful and negative towards children. These are just children. They don't even know what's going on and they don't deserve this. Nonsense.
@TinaMarie

And you know the funny thing is Beyoncé don't even look like Beyoncé until they fix her up. Blue is beautiful and so is North. People get on my nerves teaching self hate. Also last time I checked Kanye is not all that or Kim.

+Miss J I really agree with you. I just don't understand how people can do and say these things. Black people praise North West so much, a child who is of mixed race but Blue Ivy, a child who comes from two black parents they hate on. These are innocent children that have not hurt anyone. Blue Ivy didn't do anything to them. If I see posts about her on instagram, I don't read them because I am 100% sure that the majority of the comments will be hateful. How can they be black and hate on a black child?

I just talked about this with my husband about his family. Most of his nieces and nephews are mixed and his aunt even went and adopted mixed children and her son did also. Her biological grandchildren are all mixed too. There is no variety of color in the younger generation, but all the older ppl are on the darker skinned side. It's very odd to see. The light skinned kids are constantly praised for their hair texture and skin color. From the outside looking in it's weird.

I definitely agree. People think I'm biracial because of my hair and skin color but both of my parents are darker. When my mom had me, the nurses asked if she was sure my dad was my dad... But clearly I'm a lighter, spitting image of my father... Growing up lighter I never thought I fit in. Black girls hated me and the white girls didn't accept me either. I'm also a mom and one of my boys is lighter with curly hair like me and the other is darker with coarser hair like their father. They're both beautiful and I hope to instill in them that black, no matter how light or dark, is beautiful!

That is so true with the whole parent thing. My dad is dark skin & my mom is light skin but every time me & my mom are out somewhere & I get introduced as her daughter they don't believe it. For a very long time when I was younger I started to think I was adopted because of how people who question whether I was her daughter or not. People need to stop looking on the outside & start looking on the inside. Scientifically genes do matter people! Dominant traits!!

It also comes down to media representation and portrayal in films, tv and music. For example in black cinema we often see the light skin guy as the more lustful and desired (at least sexually) and the dark skinned man as the 'fall-back, second choice or the guy you know is good for you but won't decide to be with until the end or sometimes not at all.

Yes I needed a video Iike this discussing Colorism issues for my college paper. I feel that people difinitely still have that mindset that the lighter or the brighter the better. I was given backhanded compliments all my life. Me being dark skinned with very thin/sleek hair texture and very slanted eyes, most people assumed I had to be mixed with indian/Asian,or from a foreign country. It amazed me of how people felt that I couldn't be beautiful as an all African American woman.

Yes!! I totally agree I kind of argued with someone recently over Blue Ivy lol I know we have all seen the meme that says "this is what I thought Beyonce's daughter would look like" and it pissed me off. Both of her parents are black so why would she be a pale skinned, green eyed, curly haired girl. And why does she have to be those things to be deemed beautiful to society. Black people producing black children seems to offend people and its really sad!

I don't understand why people simply won't refer to those who're biracial as biracial. If your parents are both black, you're black. If both of you parents are white, you're white. If 1 parent is white another black then you're biracial. How and why would you consciously cut off one of your parents by saying I'm black or white, say you're biracial and honor them both. I also wish that people stop using slave law or notion that if you have a drop of black blood in you then you're black, black people actually quote this, smh. We sometimes make simple things difficult and in my opinion, this subject is one. I often here couples who are black and white say that their kids are black when they look completely white . I rarely here a white man who's with a black woman say that his biracial kids are white, they say biracial most times.

I am interested to see part 2 and read as many comments as I can. My mom is very light, my dad is very dark. My complexion is somewhere in between. I have always thought that my dad was a good looking man. I still think that he is. And I think that's a big reason why I have always been attracted to on darker men. I married a dark skinned man who reminded of my dad (only physically). He turned out to be an abusive monster, so I divorced him. Now I am dating a white man. He's beautiful. 6' 2", great physique, blue eyes, nice tan...gorgeous. What's sad and kind of sickening to me is that NOW people want to know what my children will look like with him if we get married. I have a lot of the same friends who never raised the question of what my kids would look like with my black husband. It IS a sad thing, and I wonder if it's a bigger issue in the south. l'm in Texas. BTW - I always thought that Pam was way better looking than Gina on Martin.

YES many people are doing this. While some people get into relationships for love, MANY are getting into them because they want their child to have an "exotic" look (which won't always happen of course). But I see it all the time just as I see how many times interracial relationships are praised over Black relationships. You're spot on about the TV shows. You can never see a dark skinned Black woman being the love interest.

People are so color struck and suffering from self-hate and anti Blackness. Very sad.

My dad is light skin green eyes nice hair and I had a lot of issues within myself coming up bc it seemed like my other siblings were favored over me bc of my darker skin. Skip to my kids now my son is light skin brown eyes and my daughter is pale with ocean blue eyes. People gauk all over my children and they always say I wish my kids were mixed and I am like excuse me. You can't help who u love. I would love a child my color but it will never happen. Great topic!!!! Too common in the black community. Parents teach your child/ren to love themselves "light, brown, or dark skin". Teach them also how to love others "light, brown, or dark skin". So many hide behind the "My Preference" line it's sad. Stop accepting what society wants us to believe is beautiful.

Thank you for this!!! I can definitely say, living and dating in Texas, colorism is a HUGE ISSUE. So much so, I had to take a break from dating black men because I felt very fetishized by them and offended by the negative things they would say about "black women" (as if I'm not one). I can't date a person who obviously carries deep rooted self hate anymore than I would date a racist white man. God finally blessed me with a beautifully minded black man who is not colour struck. It's very heavy down here in the south and very sad when my fellow light skinned/biracial/Latina/Caucasian sisters take this stuff as a compliment. I see as a warning sign of mental disorder.

I have always said until we start to embrace all hues of black amongst our own community.. no other group of ppl will embrace us. Art mimics life they can only portray what we give. I am ALL for all loving regardless of race ethnic group or sexuality. I just want the world and mainly our community to know being in a relationship with a dark skinned person (to be petty darker than a brown paper bag) will not be detrimental to your life or how you live it in real life or a portrayal on the big screen! :-)

Its sad 99% of us have had to deal with colorism and hate within our own community and society as a whole. As a brown skin black woman I remember growing up and my mother trying her best to instill that I was beautiful. She didn't even allow me to buy white dolls, all my dolls and barbies had to look like me. I thought my brown skin mom with natural curly hair to her ass was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. But outside of home I deff grew up knowing society didn't see me as beautiful or the most desirable. In school(and I mean all the way to college) the girls all black boys chased were pretty much either light skin, mixed race or of Latin descent. Kids got made fun of for being dark. I remember being a kid and being thankful my skin wasn't THAT black smh. I grew up with black people(relatives and not) telling me more or less that lighter skin was more attractive.. my hair wasn't good enough..it was too thick..too nappy and I needed perm. My hair was coarser than my mothers and I wished I had hair like hers. Images put out in the entertainment and fashion industry pretty much mimics the same sort of hate and preference. Now that im 27 and have been through some things I think ALL black is beautiful despite those idiotic experiences. Smh its just really sad and I don't know if this will ever change. I have a fine ass chocolate Bajan man(if I do say so myself) and I cant wait to pop out some chocolate kinky haired babies but I also think I don't want my kids to ever feel inferior.....but I know what will be waiting for them so I know I will have to prepare them...its really heartbreaking.

I honestly had no idea about the 'lightskinned' and 'darkskinned' debacle until college. I went to a private school with mostly white girls and boys beforehand, so I wasn't aware. True story. Two girls got into an argument in labs one day, and when class was over, one of the girls was telling a girl that was in the argument, who was lighter, that she 'automatically wins because you're light skinned.' I was so confused, and even hurt, because it made no sense to me. Beauty has nothing to do with how light, or dark your skin is, in my humble opinion. What's really sad about it is you will hear older people spewing the 'good complexion/good hair' shit more than anyone, and it's pretty disgusting and disheartening.

Justin, you are so on point! This is not your first time raising this issue, and I don't want it to be your last. Many Black people are ignorant of our history as slaves. There is a remake of "Roots" in progress, which is very much needed for the now generation. Many are brainwashed and/or bamboozled into believing things about ourselves that are just not true. My first knowledge of "dark-skinned" being a problem came from family members who made disparaging remarks about other Black (dark) people. Justin, it's messed up and I could write a book. You should continue to beat that drum because it's needed. I am listening and I never get tired of hearing it. Thanks much.

This is not just a "black issue." People all over the world are bleaching their skin and having cosmetic surgery to look more European. The biggest market for skin bleaching is in Asia. Asians also get double eyelid surgery. White standards of beauty are not going anywhere so it's up to the individual to recognize their worth.

+JustKen Stupidity? I think not. My comment was an attempt to bring to light this is a worldwide epidemic and more far reaching than just Atlanta or even the United States. Another problem in the black community is we always feel the need to insult and bring each other down. What positivity and enlightenment are you bringing to this discussion? Or are you just scrolling the comments to see who you can insult?

It's interesting because I just read an article on froharriet.com about the same subject. An I am glad we are having discussion about this, because I believe we do festishized mixed children. Personally speaking as a young child, I felt ugly because of my dark skin and it took awhile for me to love and embrace my skin, and I understand how it be can be differcult can today. There's so much issues within our community that we need to address for babies. All shades of BLACK is BEAUTIFUL !!! Tell your sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mamas, daddies, aunties, uncles, cousins that!!!I am so GRATEFUL Justin that you spoke on this subject, because it's something real that needs to discuss. I love her and all, but I always want to tell her coils and kinky hair is just as good as mine.

Everything you said in this video is so true!!!!!!!! I completely agree with you. It was not only our family who shapes our views of ourselves, its also the media, friends, history and what we learned in school. It irks me when people make such a big fuss over lighter children and ignore the darker ones. That right there sets them up to believe that they are less than. I could go on and on about this but I won't. I do want to let you know that you ARE NOT the only one. Thanks again for opening up the dialogue for this discussion. Let's have more.

I am black and mexican, yet I was never taught to think of myself as better then anyone and i was never taught to just accept one thing of myself. I dont consider myself black as I am not, I am half, as I am half mexican. Why should i negating all the other things that I am just to feel accepted and make people happy with calling myself black? People will forever justify certain things, responses when it comes to racial fetishization. The crazy thing is we all play into this concept because we all say and do things that really disclose our deep rooted thoughts, biases, insecurities and preferences. I have done it too. Thank you for highlighting what folks continue to deny. We all have done this and when we make these comments, it validates our insecurties and what we truly think is beautiful. And yall, the MEDIA PLAYS ON THIS VERY WELL AND PUSHES THIS AGENDA. We all should acknowledge this and open our eyes to accept unique beauty. Everyone is beautiful. BUT SPECIFICALLY, OUR BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL ❤️❤️❤️

I also talked to my mom to tell her how I feel. maybe she didn't notice she treats me and my other siblings different because their lighter. my ex's left me for more lighter women. I hear all the time your pretty for a dark skin girl but I Dont date your type. I'm trying my hardest to make sure my daughter know she beautiful even if sometimes I Dont feel that way. I grab dark skin dolls and pictures for her to see. and call her my lovely chocolate cake that taste so great. I do everything. this is an issue that we have to address.

I remember when I was 7-8years old growing up as a very light skinned boy and as I attended school in 1st or 2nd grade, the other dark skin black children would ask if I was mixed or if I had mixed parents and say things like "I wish I had your skin tone" or "it's not fair that your so light skin and I'm not" and I was just in shock over that because I didn't understand what the problem was with their skins tones and I didn't realize that overtime mentality made me realize that dark skin was looked down upon and it just wasn't right. But it also influenced me in a bad way because one day when I went home and my little sister and I got into an argument and I said something so hurtful to her that I regret, I said "well at least I'm not a dumb dark skin". At that moment she started crying and then my mom gave me a BIG OL SLAP that knocked some sense into me lol. She told me that just because I'm Lightskin doesn't make me better than others and that all skin tones are beautiful and at that moment I realized that the things that other me people have said and say to me negatively influenced my thinking and way I saw skin color and race itself and its sad that this is the world that we live in.

This topic's been bothering me for the LONGEST. I was JUST watching the vlog of a beautiful interracial family, just because, and in the suggestions was a video titled "Mixed girls: HOT OR NOT", or something like that. The fetishization is disrespectful to other women, but the OBJECTIFICATION of light black bodies (because, let's face it, no one's talking about half asian, half white, or anything besides diluted African features) is utterly disrespectful to them too.

And that there is no such thing as good hair or bad hair. Thank u for using ur platform to speak on this matter. Can't wait for part 2.

I am a mixed person myself and it seems like people have one of two reactions in regards to my skin tone. One is that they compliment me and ask if they can feel my curly hair or they belittle me and say I am not black enough. I have never been one to brag about how much lighter I am than the rest of my family nor have I been one to say that my hair is better than anyone else's so it really bothers me that people have made ridiculous comments about how dark skinned girls "shit on light skinned girls" or that "Chocolate is better than Caramel"... like really it shouldn't matter what your complexion is, we are all people of color at the end of the day. I have been told by black people at my high school that I wasn't black enough to join the NAACP group and that and I have been called racist slurs such as "half-breed", "high yellow", "yellow bone" and "zebra" by some of the white and black students at my school. I was raised by my mother (who has beautiful dark skin) that complexion doesn't matter, it's your personality and attitude. It used to hurt seeing those rude stereotypes about how light skinned females are arrogant, cocky, and never text back because we think we're better than everyone else.... News flash I know dark skinned, light skinned, latina, and white females that have those traits, but light skinned females are the ones that are stigmatized. What hurts the most is that a majority of the slurs come from black people. It's not fair to categorize someone into a group based on their complexion.

I can honeslty say that my family is very open mined. I'm from jamaica so i grew up in a family that is mixed with so many different races. I was not raised to see color or who has the better hair or prettier eyes out of my cousins & I. I was taught that we are all human. One thing that I do notice in some closed minded black people is that once you date or marry somebody outside of your race. Most black people feel like you no longer have the voice to speak on black issues. Which I feel is very disrespectful. Yes my husband isn't black. No I didn't sell out to my white oppressors. It just happened that my soulmate belongs to another race. Once we stop put each other as basic humans beings in different subcategories so that we can judge & degarde them. Then we as an overall society will evolve into better people. We will have more love & compassion for one another.

If you examine many celebrity's children (particularly the african american performers of this newer generation and that of the recent past, the fetishizing of mixed raced children is quite prevalent. This has been reflected through media as well, (i.e My Wife and Kid's eldest daughter replacement, The Family Matters mother replacement, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air mother replacement, etc ), entertainers such as Lupita Nyong'o, and of our first lady's beauty has been diminished to beauty as a black woman as opposed to just being beautiful women. It seems to be quite perpetual. However, I find that the best solution is to take these discussions and implement them into our action regarding the matter in the future. Know your beauty and culture is beyond physical constituents which make every bit of who you are and the human race as a whole, that much greater. Great video.

I love you so much! I won't ever get tired of this topic. It is very sad, but true. I grew up thinking light skin, long hair, and white features were better. Over the past couple of years, I have really fell in love with what I look like. Now I'm a girl that has never liked light skinned guys, and I always wanted me a tall, dark skinned man. My family would always say, "Oh, you want some dark babies huh?" Why is that even something we think about? I agree with you, we should start wondering about if the child will be healthy and happy. We need to start loving ourselves and what God gave us to work with. We need to stop separating "good" and "bad" black people features. We need to stop separating light skin and dark skin.

The problem is that people who know all three are always making comparisons. My baby was bald for a year and everyone expected her to be born with flowing hair because that's what my middle daughter has. I prayed so hard for dark skinned nappy headed children because I know I could love and appreciate that type of beauty. I knew that having children with more black features than aboriginal, would force people to shut the hell up with their comparisons. I love all kinds of beauty. Fluffy big afro hair is beautiful, bald is beautiful, flowing hair is beautiful. My girls are all gorgeous and from now on I'm just gonna shut people down. When they say things like "They got dark over the summer" I'm gonna reply with "I no longer entertain that kind of discussion"

Hi Justin, this is my 1st time on your channel and I would love to see more of your channel. I saw her video on KZbin about this topic and she did a wonderful job. I agree with you on the fetish of biracial children, I mean what happen to just having a healthy baby. I myself am a 38th biracial person and I can tell you growing up I would hear all kinds of comments about good hair and being light skin. My dad and his siblings were not treated equally because their skin was darker than their cousins. My aunt would only date light skin brothers so her children would come out light. She would say,” I will never date anyone with skin darker than mine,” until she meet my uncle who’s skin was a deep dark chocolate and yes he looked good. They had a baby together and I fail head over in heels in love with her and her skin was a beautiful chocolate color. I called her my Gerber Baby she was just too cute. I personally don’t care what color you are. I have seen some dark skin people who are drop dead gorgeous and I have seen some light skin and biracial people who fall from the ugly tree. What I do hate is hearing children of color saying they wish their skin was lighter, seeing people bleach their skin, or hearing “I want a mixed baby”. Why? You might as well say you want a Chia pet. Why not say I want a healthy baby that I can love and cherish? Just because you have a mixed or light skin child doesn’t mean they are beautiful. Trust, it doesn’t work out that way. You’re playing with a load dice just like everyone else in the baby making department. By people being color struck self hate spreads into the next generation and the next…..etc.

I've heard so many black people, so *blatantly*, talk about marrying and having children with white people just so they could have "pretty" children, basically saying that dark skin and coarse hair cannot be pretty. Colorism is SO deeply ingrained into us black people. Even as aware as I am of this, I still catch myself having issues with my dark brown skin and coarse hair. Racism really did a number on us and until we admit it, we'll never be free. ...But side-note, Justin, did you know Cadillac Kimberly just put up a new video> kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5vOm2mHo9mnhpo , and she even came for Funky Dineva, lmao; the chick is crazy but entertaining.

As a Dominican person with one black latina mother and a white latino father, the comments are insane. Even to this day. I go to Florida for my vacation and I come back, and I am literally damned because I came back a shade darker. It's not even something I think about. It's crazy. Don't get me started one people who are oddly obsessed with my hair or light eyes. Really, it's not that serious. I dont care all that much, but I always point out if someone is treating me with preferential treatment compared to another Dominican, especially if they are darker. What you are NOT going to do, Mister Dominican Person, is treat me like I'm gold for no damn reason whatsoever, da fuck? lol Treat me right because I'm a good person and pay my taxes, not because of the way I look. How superficial.

Really good topic! I don't think it's THAT deep but I do agree it is an issue of self-hate, and we should love our darker skin and courser hair if we have dark skin and course hair. I'm definitely going to go read that article by Necole. BUT OAN I really REALLYYYYY need to hear your take on this video of a school police officer manhandling a student in efforts to remove her from the classroom.

I've never heard of this light skin dark skin thing till I moved out to atl in Cali like I said we mix races it don't matter in atl its always light skin is prettier and me I'm lightskin with curly hair but I don't think my skin is any better than anyone's dark skin is pretty so is light but it sucks that within the black community there's so much hate and so many prejudices because what other race do you know does that ? It sucks especially being bi racial .... I have so much to say about this topic because it hits home kinda for me I deal with so much hatred because of why I'm mixed with or because I look a certain way and while ppl may think being mixed is cute this and that they have no idea what some mixed kids go through in the black community seriously why are we so separated within our own community but we expect white ppl to be on our side when yet we can't even accept our ppl who have a lighter skin tone like wtf ?? I'd really like for someone to break this down for me truly

You are so right... i notice it all the time and it is really sad that we as black people still have this issue of color within our own race!
