In this deep dive, we unravel the science behind one of the world’s most devastating but silent epidemics: depression. Drawing on Robert Sapolsky’s groundbreaking lecture, "The Biology and Psychology of Depression," we explore the intricate dance between brain chemistry, psychology, and the relentless grip of this disease. Depression isn’t just a fleeting sadness-it’s a catastrophic condition that can hijack your thoughts, strip away joy, and leave you drowning in your own mind. From the role of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, to the revolutionary yet dangerous promise of ketamine, we break down the facts with raw honesty.
This isn’t a feel-good discussion; it’s a wake-up call to recognize depression for what it is: a medical crisis. Whether you’re struggling yourself or trying to understand someone else’s battle, this video will change the way you see mental health forever. Dive in, and let’s tackle the silent catastrophe together.

The most mind boggling thing to me is.... How many actually lack empathy. In it's truest and most simplest definition. The ability to understand someone else's point of view. Without ridicule or selfish tendencies to voice how their able to understand... Just be supportive! Thats it... Just listen, and "get it"! Perhaps understanding what it means to be supportive in the first place.

The painful part about stigma - it's part of how people get status freebees (or status poaching) for free. The vested interest in being 'better than' or superior to is a big part of why stigma dies so hard and even lasts after laws change and after people have already known most of the science for a decade or more.

can't believe the timing of this. because i have been feeling these symptoms since past few months and didn't even know that it is a depression. i have constantly trying to figure out by myself that what the hell is wrong with, what did i do to experience this state i am experiencing. constantly stuck in a loop of figuring out the cause of this. can't believe how blind and unaware the world is. thank you so much for shedding a light onto this!

It's commendable that you are beginning to recognize and articulate your experience with depression; self-awareness is a crucial first step in emotional healing. Many individuals struggle in silence, often feeling isolated in their suffering, which underscores the importance of open dialogue and education around mental health. Remember, seeking support from professionals and connecting with others who understand can be pivotal in navigating this challenging journey.

this one is helpful. Though have you ever did any video on disinfo? Like how to hijack the prefrontal cortex by disabling it with emotional content and inducing hypothalamus to work (i may have confused the names of the structures). Can we also tell people that if someone is telling you that you need to hate something - it is your enemy ? Yeah, much to ask for but just sharing the intent.

I was getting ready to say the same. People never learn about personal boundaries and comfort zones anymore. Makes it unfortunate for the rest of us who prefer to be solo, I don't think the time of lone wolf will ever be over, I will be like one in til my death, so many things prevent me from seeking complete solitude, improving one's physical surroundings is sometimes enough. Don't talk about things you have no clue about, be respectful and come to realize that we humans don't understand or appreciate everything about each others especially if we don't even know one another.

@@NURJMUHAMMAD19then stop watching videos like this that dive into philosophy and psychology, problem is that everyone wants to know the information or you wouldn’t be on this video. Some hit a point of existential crisis but the only way out of that is discussion with others to try and work out a mutual understanding and experience of life. Lone wolf lifestyle means no internet connection watching other people, if you still watch peoples content you’re still under the influence of societal thoughts which can be said any sentient being including our ai friend here.

Also thing is ppl that have only mild depression see things more realistically, even severe depression can cause distortions, sometimes it is not happening without reason tho! Like that you are not just thinking negative in distorted ways! Most compassionate/smart ppl in history were also the most depressed like for instance Schopenhauer, or Tolstoy - they saw life for what it truly was! Depression is also like call to change something in your life or when something in environement is wrong (it can be evolutionary functional "not mental disorders"!!! that is just BS of idiotic field of bio-psychiatry)! Framework of consciousness how life is experienced is different during depression it is change in consciousness itself and how one relates to the world! Then there is also existential depression or called existential boredom which is mostly from meaninglessness of life, because life is truly meaningless! There is nothing to gain! THere is no free will, no self, everything is nothingness! Most depression is caused from this world and individualistic society! This is what 99% ppl+ don't understand... Hell is other ppl... YOu cannot give yourself: compassion, love, understanding... No one wants to be responsible for other beings: ppl don't even react to homeless yelling for help...

So when the economy is really bad we call it a depression. And a tropical storm is a depression. English is funny like that. But from the Latin De- down, and Premere - press. So technically it’s an action. But I don’t know anybody that would consciously decide to not enjoy life. Personally I found that diet was a huge factor, environment has a big role too, and the free time to ponder. My brain could not think clearly when I ate the typical American diet. My body did not want to function either. And free time to ponder takes money. But when I decided to eat real food 25 years ago, my brain started to function better, my body too. Which made it much easier to get out of bed and earn enough income to have some free time to ponder, and change my environment, my perception, and attempt to be a positive influence to the people around me. Cuz if I don’t take care of me first I am no good anyone else. “ I think therefore I am.” René Descartes. And “ I got tired of feeling like shit so I turned on my Happy Switch.” SNFU. I recommend both philosophers.👆
