I was on Irbesartan and Amlodipine (AE inhibitos). After I began Keto and lost weight (about 30 pounds), I ditched both meds. My doctor (who appears to be in his 70s) insisted that I remain on low salt. Later I learned that I needed more salt to have balanced electrolytes. I do understand that physicians in clinical practice often rely on the knowledge that was available when they graduated, but I am still disappointed that he has not updated himself with information critical to the obesity epidemic. YTers such as Dr. Fung have been invaluable, and I am grateful. I now follow Keto and IF and plan to do so indefinitely.

I had borderline high blood pressure and when I went low carb, lost the weight, it went down. I hate, hate taking meds so I was willing to work with diet and exercise and it works. Who woulda thunk? Lol! My pressure is even lower than the norm. Doctors are just so quick with the drugs and most people don't know and don't take the time to research side effects.

I agree 100%. I have elevated BP and my doctor immediately put me on meds and only told me to lower my salt intake and basically said I will have this for life. Since being on Keto I have cut the dose of the meds in half and must eat more salt. My BP is still a little high but I think if I continue to lose weight it will go down.

Yeah that's crazy I was on a BP med and I noticed ankle swelling. My dr prescribed hydrochlorothiazide instead of changing meds. I thought the diuretic was excessive and didn't do much, changed to losartan, and haven't had that problem since. You're the only doctor I've heard actually address this After being off keto after I had a bad diverticulitis episode requiring surgery, I gained back 50-60 pounds, and my hypertension returned. I was on lisinopril and developed a chronic cough. It went away when I quit. I also suddenly got my energy back. I’m quite annoyed with the doctor, as I told her my bp has been manageable with a simple diuretic. She told me that was what she was prescribing, but it wasn’t. It was a beta blocker. It took me months to figure out that the bp med was behind my cough. I had to figure it out for myself, but it is well known and published. The doctor should have taken me off it when I complained about the cough. Needless to say, I’m not going back to her. Not because she made a mistake, but because she lied to me about the nature of what she was prescribing to me.

Take your blood pressure monitor to your doctor's office next time you go so you can check your monitor against his to see if yours is accurate. However, having a higher reading in the doctor's office is so common that there's a name for it: "White Coat Syndrome." People get nervous in a doctor's office, which raises blood pressure. Also, if you were a little late and were rushing to get there, that can raise blood pressure also. However, speak to your doctor about it rather than relying on advice in the KZbin comments section.

@JoeBtfzplk Жыл бұрын
They're aware. They just know that most people won't do it, or at least won't stick with it. My previous primary care physician (previous only because he moved out of the area) had a drawing on his exam room wall. It was of a large room with two desks, and a physician sitting behind each. One had a sign over it saying "Lifestyle Changes" and the other had a sign that said "Pills and Surgery." The Pills and Surgery desk had a very long line. The Lifestyle Changes desk had no line at all. Probably fairly accurate for most patients.

I would seriously consider moving to a more evenly-based diet, or animal-based. We need all the nutrients we can get and every meal should ideally be as nutrient-dense as possible. Since the highest amounts, and most usable forms of nutrients are found in animal foods, it makes little sense not to include large amounts of them in the diet.

Even with all of my metabolic numbers "in the green" the one thing I've never been able to get rid of is my BP meds. If I don't take them every day, it jumps way, way up the next day.
