When I was growing up, my grandparents on their farms and my father on ours, raised family gardens. We raised potatoes, beans, squash, okra, tomatoes, peas, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, cabbage, onions, peppers, garlic, multiple kinds of all of these. We had chickens for eggs and meat, pigs for meat and lard, cattle for milk and beef. We also had an orchard with apples, plums, peaches, grapes, blueberries, and an acre of strawberries. We had chickens for eggs and meat, pigs for meat and lard, cattle for milk and beef. My grandpa had a tractor but refused to plow it. He plowed with a big half breed draft horse, Tony. When my dad got a break from medical school, we would go see our grandparents. Daddy would plow with the horse. His shadow, I would try to step into his footprints in the plowed dirt. My legs weren’t hardly long enough. My little brother still wore a saggy diaper. He skidded, on his butt, over the big dirt clods, behind me, trying to keep up. By the time Daddy would lay down the plow, at the end of the row to make the turn around, Brother and I would catch up... and follow, saying, “Gee and haw”, just like Daddy. We came to the house filthy. My mom, sisters and grandmas, all canned, “put up”, preserved the biggest part of what the men grew. My parents moved us to a mountain in East Tennessee. It was girls, inside, boy’s outside...mostly. I joined the Army and moved more than 30 times over the years, ‘till I retired. I raised small gardens, not near the size of those I grew up on. Over time I got away gardening. Looks like I’m going back. At least I know what to do. Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. Texas

I grew up in Germany in a little farm town. I still remember going out on the tractor fertilizing the crops. We didn’t have hot water we had to boil it on a stove that you had to put coal in it. We had a well and an outhouse. We finally got a flushable toilette. We had a big cow and pig stall with at least 50 cows 50 pigs. They all became my friends. We had rabbits, chickens. We had fresh berries growing in the woods. My grandpa would hit me with his cane if I touched a poisonous berry or leaf. I learned real quick. That was the best tasting food I’ve ever had in my entire life. It was also the best living in my entire life I would go back to living like that in a heartbeat.

Growing up in Bronx New York on a 50x100 lot - my Father used whatever soil there was for his vegetable garden. We didn’t play in the yard but in the street. It was safe and I remember it fondly. But it was a different time. Even today, In his late 70s my father still has that garden and continues to grow his veggies, figs, peaches, persimmons and grapes. He handed that love of gardening down to my son; who turned my back yard in New Rochelle (just north of the Bronx) into a similar garden and a apiary. I will always appreciate that garden and the connection it made between my father and my son.

That's the price we pay for living in a society that willingly accepted that some people need to be obscenely rich for no reason whatsoever. WE don't work for ourselves, or our benefit, we work so they enjoy the fruits of our labour. I'm talking CEOs, easy money celebrities, politicians like Putrid, Cheeto in Chief, Ballsonaro et cetera, rich nuisances like Bezos, religious leaders like the human-skin-on-demon who claims to blow the Covid away with his super powers (even tho the Bible claims to deny false prophets and all that), the list is big, yet...for some reason, nobody is doing anything about them, even if the are the source of over 60% of our modern day problems. Everything from fabricated wars (operation Northwoods) to pandemics (1977, China/Russia/adjacent area), to fabricated prices (the real value of blood diamonds) and more. We can't possibly be prepared for disasters when we let our governments get scott free with everything they do, let rich people pay cents for stealing billions, false religious leaders (or plain rapist or thief religious leaders) oppulize everything around them in the name of one of the Gods in whatever religion one might choose to abide by. When this whole Covid situation ends (that is to say, we have a vaccine, not like last time), if we don't do something about it, we have learnt, nothing. And therefore, we should complain about nothing too.

Shawn, I am stuck in Afghanistan and can't get home to do exactly what you are doing. I have tried to get my wife to take this as seriously as I am. I ordered and had delivered $200 worth of heirloom seeds of almost every common vegetable. Previously, we had a very similar setup in our subdivision with a garden and chickens until April 2018. We sold the house and bought 83 acres and began building a house. It is now within about a month of being completed. Now I'm trying to convince my wife to focus on establishing a garden because you only get one time per year to sew seeds(for the most part) and that time is rapidly approaching. You are one of my top 4 channels on youtube, and the first channel I ever subscribed to. The others are Mr. Chickadee (you would love his antique hand-tools and techniques), Wild Wonderful Off-grid, and Fall Line Ridge. All things/channels I think you would find interesting and useful. You keep doing what you're doing, and when the dust settles from this thing, you and your family will be set up for future successes.

If we all grow a little bit of our own food, it reduces the demand of commercial farming and therefor reduces commercial farming pollution. I have been watching you channels for a few years now and have learned a lot. I start my self reliance journey this fall when I retire from the US Navy after serving 21 years. You have inspired me. I bought 20 acres in rural Missouri and will build my own homestead.

For many years I have advocated being ready for an emergency, having equipment and supplies to last a minimum of 90 days. Many I know blew me off. I was right, unfortunately, but I was expecting something other than basically biological warfare. If this world wide situation does not improve we are going to no longer be talking about SHTF, but living it. At that point each family group will be on their own against the rest of the world trying to live just to see the next sunrise. Folks like you do more than just give us info, you also provide us with a calming influence, that helps to reduce the panic rising up in peoples minds. That panic is what will trigger the SHTF. Keep it up Shawn, you provide a solid touch stone of reassurance for us all. Old Muttly gives you a double snappy salute. ;-)
@lakemichigan65984 жыл бұрын
Your family alone cannot keep the wolves at bay in a SHTF situation. You'll need to band (and bond) with neighbors and friends, sharing along the way, because group protection will be the only way to make it through. Humanity has always chosen this method as its means of survival - and it has stood us very well.
@robertweldon79094 жыл бұрын
I agree with all comments made here about what I said, but eventually a decision must be made as to self preservation, do I and my family eat today or the association group. When SHTF happens, then resources are limited. The bigger the group the more thinly the resources are spread. This is why our hunter gatherer ancestors where always small in group numbers, and had conflict with other such groups. If a group gets along well, it is because they all know each other VERY well. If not, trouble will soon follow. It is also just our nature. Be ready to go it alone and hope you never have to. Thanks for so many thumbs up, it is the largest I have ever had on a subject.

Shawn, I'm an American. And since January, I've been witnessing the death of my country. The u.s. will never be the same. Millions of small businesses will never again open their doors. All of the employees of these businesses will be out of work and competing with millions of others who have lost their job. The few farmers we have left will be hard pressed to feed the country. We will be trillions of dollars in debt from the stimulas package. Not so much the money given to the people, but the millions of dollars given to plan Parenthood etc., That has nothing to do with the pandemic. Right now all the doubting Thomas's are trying to play catch up or they are still burying their head in the sand. I'm afraid...of the pandemic and the aftermath it will have on myself and my beloved country. Stay safe and healthy.

People were growing their own food similar to the hippy movement in the mid 60's. At the end of last summer, I found a pretty 6 acres near Barry's Bay. Partially cleared of trees. Mostly mixed trees, some bush and evergreens My son and I drove to meet the realtor and look at the property. I have lived in the Ottawa valley in the late 60's and had an idea what to look for. Within 5 minutes I put in an offer. The mobile home is high and dry. The driveway is firm. The soil is firm only at the edges a bit of a swampy area. Maybe half an acre. It came with a trail. The lot has a septic and a dug well. Enough for an old lady like me. I won't be living there but heading up soon for a spring cleanup and will be staying there till Nov. I consider myself very fortunate to have found a place away from the city. Especially now with that pandemic. The poor non-conformists predicted it back in 2011. Its so sad that those living in the city will be faced with food shortages and the community gardens are not allowed to be used this year.

I guess if a person lives long enough, the racking up of years puts enough awful (and good) things in your memory to enable you to endure whatever comes down the road and " keep on keepin on" with an attitude that this too will pass. In 4 weeks it will be the 50th anniversary of the Kent State Massacre, or the murder of unarmed college students by a scared national guard. I was a 19 year old college student who felt like I had a bulls eye on my back while my brother was fighting in Vietnam. I felt like my brother (the army) was shooting at me (in effect). That was followed a few years later by two gas shortages and subsequent rationing. One was so bad there was literally no gas available for anyone. During the first (worst one) I lived in far Northern Maine. I couldn't work, or go anywhere because my life and job depended on my car; I couldn't go home to Vermont for Christmas because of gasoline insecurity. Several years after that two of my 3 kids were born with life threatening conditions that had them in the hospital several times before they were 1. I wasn't sure if one of them would make it through, she did thankfully. I know that this pandemic is awful, I am not minimizing it. I am just trying to keep it in perspective. In its wake, my job is to lay low and read some books, do some writing, bake my own bread, spend time with my wife and work in my shop and on my silver bench. I can deal with that happily. Obviously I am concerned for my neighbors, friends and family but we can all be safe if we just slow down and use the time in a positive way. Maybe in a twisted way, the lousy situation in the world might make us a little more mindful and grateful for what it is asking us to do. We may come out of this better people.

The path to freedom from sin is so simple, somehow ppl cant understand b/c of the simplicity of it. Their eyes & ears are blinded. God bless.

I have a cabin with 80 acres but it is 6 1/2 hours away and in another state. It's driving me nuts that I can't go there. We are in a virus hotspot about an hour west of Detroit and I don't want to be the guy that spreads it to the area where my cabin is, which is mostly virus free.

I feel the same way... have a small cabin on 10 acres in the U.P. of Michigan... can't travel there without quarantining for 2 weeks...

Don’t feel guilty, if you want to go, go. This is still supposedly a free country

@@curtisep5885 The other thing I won't have the self control to not visit my family while I am there. My dad is on the north side of 80 and I am not going to bring it to him.

Thank you very much for speaking about the hard truth. Personally, i take great encouragement from you towards upgrading our gardens this spring. Looking forward to seeing and hearing how you get even more self reliant. Please continue to share with us, even about tough matters.

When I was stationed in Stuttgart in the 70s I noticed that very few people had a "lawn". Any bit of ground was planted with veggies& of course flowers ( they do love flowers). At the time I thought it odd but now that lm older I understand they went through tough times coming out of ww2. I agree with the other comments that I bet whoever bought your house wished they had that prepped garden. 😊

I have access to plenty of elk, deer, bear, fish, birds etc....staples are the issue and I will be ordering packaged food to keep at our cabin. On another note, at least here in the states, the beer delivery guys are saying every week has been like the fourth of July. Who would have thunk it, beer and TP.

I've been watching your videos for almost two years now. Thank you for producing these videos, last summer I was inspired to start a vegetable and berry garden and now that its been carried over to this year it has been so rewarding. I live in rural Ohio and in my area all local vegetables and even egg farms are all reliant on migrant workers, so locally there is not as much product as normal. With everyone panic buying our smaller grocery stores are bare, especially when people from the larger towns flood in to panic buy too. Having our own fresh fruit and vegetables to eat has been so rewarding. I have also fallen in love with basic woodworking/carpentry projects. I wish the zoning in my area wasn't so strict so I could start my life debt free. Pretty much every square inch of the lower 48 is incorporated with the strict laws, so an affordable debt-free homestead is not much of an option for most, especially for an eager 19 year old that wants to find my way in the world, building/buying a minimum 1,000sq-ft home with septic/electric/well is not an option. I have been in contact with local township leaders trying to see how affordable homesteading/off-grid living could be possible, thanks for the inspiration Shawn!

Doing it is one thing, holding onto it ios another. When things get desperate, people will flock to the woods trying to get away from it. I hope you have a plan for that.
