If you haven't already, I would suggest that you invest now in canning and dehydration supplies. By late summer, it will be almost impossible to buy things like quart and pint jars, lids, rings, pressure cookers, canning pots, racks, canning jar lifters, etc, etc, etc due to the fact that there will be so many trying to buy these products. The difference between preparedness and panic is timing. Buy early and be prepared for whatever may come your way.

@@jeep1070 You are right on the money with his post being a good lesson to those who read, however, I don't think he meant doomsday prepping at all.. you see the thing is with a garden so large its almost impossible that one family will eat all the food the garden produces so some of it will need to be preserved and jarred to make the most of it and avoid it going to waste. So Bill is right, buying all the supplies mentioned in his comment is definitely an investment that needs to be made rather early than late. Nothing doomsday prep about it, hope this comment doesn't tick you off, I just thought it would add some value to clarify, Have a nice day everyone! Stay safe!

Thank you for this, Shawn. You went over all the gardening basics, very well. This will help a lot of people. Here in the city, I have been sharing how to regrow food scraps since we have apt. dwellers, low income and homeless. With a rinsed out disposable container, a bit of non-toxic soil, a rooted cabbage core, people needing food quickly have almost instant gratification. The core will start sprouting leaves, which are edible right away. Celery, lettuce cores, any onions, scallion bulbs will produce new tops right away. Beet, carrot, radish leaves are edible. Let them bolt for seed. All seed from fruit plant them-every fruit tree or vine of mine came from a seed. There are YT vids on this. Get growing everybody! Sprouted potatoes? No Problem. Put in 5" of soil in a potting soil bag. when tops sprout and grow keep adding soil, leave six to eight inches of plant above the soil. Potatoes will grow roots (w potatoes) out of their stems. When almost full, you may start to see bulges in the bag. You can put a hole in the plastic and take potatoes out. No need to wait for the plant to die off. Do not eat green ones, if any. Homegrown potatoes are the best you will ever have.

Today I moved compost that I made in a small rotating unit on the patio over winter, into the large rotating unit behind the garage. Took the half composted material from the stationary bin and put it into the large unit also. Dug out my wheelbarrow sifted finished compost from the bin into the barrow, then wheeled it to the front yard and filled in low spots. Thought about it for several days, then watched this episode late last night. That got me off my duff and moving this morning! I always am living life on a budget, on a shoestring. Most of my compost materials, except for fruit and veggie scraps/peels, comes from summer plants that others throw to the curb in the autumn, and I salvage and recycle! Love watching you, have been doing so since you started the cabin 3 years ago. Inspires me to do what I can - I am limited at 76, but I still try to improve my little gardens. As always, Stay Safe!

I admire what you are doing Shawn. I am a long time watcher You are so right about major events impacting us and forcing us to alter the way we live to ensure our own security. However each of us has different events that impact those decisions. For me the first two most significant events were the gas shortages of 1974 and 1978. At that time I was living in Northern Maine near New Brunswick Canada, miles from anywhere and was 100 % dependent on my cars and gasoline to live and work. Thankfully we heated with wood. The third crisis for me was a major heart issue that required very serious open heart surgery, a week in the hospital and 5 months recovery. Those three events defined my path for security and well being. I vowed never to be dependent on gasoline again and never be more than 30 minutes from a major medical center with first level cardiac care. Forty years later I now live in a rural village where I buy 75% my food from local farmers in a county that has almost as many cows as people, you (and others on KZbin) have inspired me to grow my own veggies in an extensive container garden in my small backyard, I have one car that I drive 4000 miles a year (sometimes less) and I am 30 minutes from a first rate heart care center. Oh and the one other crisis that I never figured out a solution to was the coffee shortage of 1975. NOW THAT WAS A CRISIS . LOL

Yet another great video. Your approach to self-reliance is awesome and inspiring! In 2007, I tried an experiment to see how many lbs of tomatoes I could grow in self watering containers I designed and made from Home Depot buckets, and the wrinkle was I was using my driveway only as the garden. The idea was to test whether people who aren't blessed with land that they could grow a substantial quantity of food in a small footprint. Your videos inspire me to get back to those roots. Love what your doing and continue to do. Excellent. I to have always wanted to do something similar since i was 15, went to colorado to visit dad's oldest sister, and family. They lived in the mountains at about 8500 ft. I was hooked. However life changed plans when i met my wife to be, and had a beautiful daughter. Put up a small ranch home and lived, loved gardening and learning all i could, could hunt on my small acreage, mushrooms in the fall, canning..etc. etc. In 2002 i was hit by a woman on my Harley, typical left turn into me at a stop. Why tell this, i now am trying to get to maine. Living in southern new england now, been looking at land for over a year. Physical health issues are making this more than what my old self would be doing, doubting my abilities, being blind in one eye and many other health issues, my heart still lives in the woods.

Gardening always interests me. I'm not attempting to grow my own food, but when I moved to this small retirement home I inherited quite a few garden beds that require quite a bit of care in order not to get overgrown and overrun with volunteer weeds and plants blowing in or coming in with the birds' poop. It's just amazing what springs up year to year. I have perennials and biannuals that reseed where they may and standards such as day lilies, irises, lamb's ears, columbine, hydrangea, bleeding heart, some wild violets, wild strawberries that I should never have allowed to take root), black-eyed Susans, daisies, and plants I don't remember the names of. Quite a conglomeration. My urban front and backyards in a quiet residential area are quite a bit different from your wild and rugged homestead, but the urge to plant and grow and appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature is a commonality that nearly all humans share, even if they never stick their hands into dirt or pull a weed.

@Pink Salt most garden vegetables are annual like squashes/lettuces/other leafy greens/ so they will flower,go to seeds then die. So you will replant these every year. Especially in northern climate. Example Some people in tropical climate could have peppers growing for a few years but than production drops so you would need to replace the plants as they mature. Perrenial like Fruit trees/bushes or some vegetables like Asparagus will growback each year for years and will take a few years to many years to become productive(depending on plants and zones if you plant a banana tree in canada it will die 😅) hope this was helpful

Great video! I’ve also planted sea buckthorn and my only thought about your plan is to plant them in an area that gets a lot of sunlight. I tried planting a few on the edge and they died. They demand a lot of light because they’re pioneers. Exciting times ahead for your garden!
@davidmesser86194 жыл бұрын
Love it. This is actually my favorite part of homesteading. The old pioneers did exactly what you have done, and in the order of which you have done it. They get their shelter livable. They hunted because they needed the meat, and they couldn't plant for the first couple of years because the wildlife would eat everything. Then they gardened and cleared their first fields. Even then the wildlife would get a third of what they planted. Solution? Blast the rascals and eat them! Bwuhaha! Well, take care Shawn and stay healthy. Vaughn

Great informative video, Shawn. Thanks again for another one. I really resonated with your classification of the garden as part of the infrastructure of your homestead. I’ve long believed that if one is raising as much of their own food as is feasible, or possible, for themselves on their own land, then it is no longer a garden in the sense of an enjoyable hobby with a few rewards. It then and thereby must be approached as infrastructure just like the cabin, the driveway, the shop, or barn, or a garage. It’s has become a necessity for daily food consumption with long term goals and benefits. Great job, keep up the good work, and enjoy your journey. :-) Best regards to you and your family.

@maryblaylock65454 жыл бұрын
Excellent! My dad did that when we got close to 1,000 trees and shrubs. Bare roots plants from Willow River. Dad would make the hole, I'd drop in 2 or 3 smelt and put the tree or shrub in.
