The thing is a prolonged depression usually ends up with you having a horrible life. You cannot continue in your job or studies and in worst case you lose your friends and loved ones cause you have no energy to care of these relationships. Then when you are finally trying to come back from the depression you have a lot of obstacles to face while still probably having pretty low mental energy. And a vicious cycle begins. Building your life from the ground up is possible though and who knows maybe you will end up in a better place you otherwise would.

Short and direct into the point of the question, for a month I was taking anti-depressives because I thought I was with depression, but when I look back at my life what I thought was a depressed life was just a bad embased life, that's why the anti-d. weren't working. The hardest part at all is to assume your life is horrible instead of taking medicines and think it will solve every thing in your life. I'm glad I foud your channel, you're helping a lot, keep up the good work, you're awesome

'Guy with Engineering degree has to work as a janitor because his mom's got cancer. He's getting alcoholic and secluding himself from friends. He DOESN'T have depression. It's just a really "horrible horrible life" Guy has an awesome life but doesn't feel like getting out of bed in the morning. Now he's got depression' WTF dude!!!! You've confused depression with an existential crisis. I don't know about you, but a lot of people out there get Depression WHEN THEY HAVE A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE LIFE, not when everything's peachy. People don't just wake up in the morning and get depressed, they have to have a serious problem in their life for depression to get triggered. "The real cure lies in taking responsibility and putting your life together". Try doing that when you have depression!! And if you went through some really horrible shit and you're in a constant bad mood, you should meet a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist without trying to "take responsibility and put your life back together" all by yourself which, if you have depression, would only end up making things worse

Depression and being sad are two different things. Sadness is a natural reaction that occurs in response to a tragedy in real life. Sadness is temporary, but the potential to see happiness is greater than that of someone who is depressed. When someone’s depressed, their emotions are not properly regulated. Although there’s not necessarily wrong with someones life. Depression is not natural. Being sad in response to bad situations is natural. Although in cases where bad things occur on a daily basis, depression CAN manifest, but there are people that can recover when the bad things end. Although a person may not have a particularly bad life, depression can shift the persons perception in thinking that their life is bad when in reality it isn’t. Think of it like this: If you were in a dark room and happiness was a lightbulb, being sad would simply be turning off the lightbulb with a flick of a button. When bad things happen, flicking the switch off is the natural response. If you were depressed, once the lightbulb is out, no matter how many times you flick the switch, the lightbulb wont turn on. It needs to be fixed. The point is, you’ve lost control of the ability to regulate your emotions if you’re depressed. It is true that depression can manifest from a series of bad things, but it is also true that when bad things happen you can simply just be sad as a natural response.

Mom Skirt I have major insecurities about myself on many different levels. I have finally worked up the energy to tell my depression to suck it. Slowly, I’ve been changing small parts of my life. (Working out, changing eating habits, seeking counseling, getting financially healthy, etc.) Yes, I understand deeply how draining it is every day, but I keep giving myself pep talks and kicking my own ass to change my ways. Basically, if you hate yourself, take the things you hate and get rid of them one step at a time. Yes it takes effort but it’s worth it.

There's a third category to me, people that feel "depressed" because of the world they live in. In that case, it's not life situation you can do something about nor hormones, it's on a rational, existencial and philosophical level. And in that case, would that be called depression ? I'd rather have them sorted as "type of depression" than "it is, or it's not", what you describe in that video is clinical depression.

Luckily for me it worked splendidly the first time, which is very uncommon apparently. The same medicine made by another company doesn't work for me at all, so I was very lucky. Thinking back on the time before I took my medicine I can't believe that I pulled through with it. I'm thankful that I have help now. The only downside is that if I've been drinking the medicine stops working for a day or so.

I sort of agree. Most of my problem came from escapism. Just want to go home and spend all my time with my computer, be it programming, watching anime, checking some subreddits daily, or else. People say that I'm dull -- I am -- but so far I enjoy my time alone. Can't stand being in social interaction for too long. Although depression is not always black and white. Just because someone have a relatively perfect life, doesn't mean they're automatically depressed when he/she have the symptom, vice versa.

I think it gets at least a few basic points down. Depression is a complicated subject so there was no way a five minute summary was ever going to catch all circumstances. In a summary context, its points are clear in that feelings of depression can occur either in part due to depression itself or due to living a horrible life (and usually it is a mixture of the two). In these cases, you should aim to do your best to remove the horrible life aspects. You may still be left with the depression itself afterwards, but you will have at least improved your overall circumstances and that can then give you the space to focus on managing the depression.

You actually forgot to mention CBT(Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), which is a therapy done by psychologists to change how depressed people think about the things they have/happen in life. Sorry i can not understand these people who have depression or claim they have and at the same time they are doing well at many aspects of their lives which is a great thing. However this shows to me they are kind of ungrateful. I do experience many episodes of serious depression myself lately but.........you guessed it..i do NOT do well at the rest unfortunately. A combination of personal errors,unresolved weaknesses and fears and an ugly economical situation in my country resulted at my personal failure. So i believe someone who is doing well at othet aspects of his/her life is much easier to go through this.

I know this since i didn't have in the past not like this i experience now anyway So yes i may see the problem through my own eyes and beliefs but yes it does exist to people who don't have any serious economical and personal problem i know. You do have depression if you feel depressed regardless of your status or personal life.
@ariekanibalie6 жыл бұрын
I've always doubted whether low-status service workers can even get diagnosed as depressed, kind of like you never hear about people working at McDonald's or as a sales clerk suffering from 'burn out'. Could be different in Murrica, but most doctors indeed would inquire whether those feelings of silent despair and hopelessness don't just stem from having a shit job, before prescribing pills or therapy. Then again, it's the apparent inability or unwillingness to change a bad situation that might be a sign of depression. Either way, if you're one of those incel failsons who lives out his parents' basement scourging the internet looking for feminists or liberals to blame for your miserable excuse of a life, you need to take a serious look at yourself.

I have multiple friends that say they have depression, but literally nothing in their behaviors has proven it. All it boils down to is, "I'm sad because [bad thing] happened once and I refuse to become a better person and learn from my experiences. Instead I'm gonna cowtow to it in every aspect of my life until I can do nothing but act sad and talk about how depressed I am." Funny, too, is it's always teenage girls pulling this crap, who are, most commonly, full of way too many emotions and way too much drama. Needless to say, I've started calling bullshit when I meet a teen girl who claims to have depression. I would consider this a toxic point of view but I've yet to meet any teenage girl with real, genuine depression. It's like "I'm actually depressed" is a neato icebreaker with teen girls, which makes someone with real depression hard to believe. Sucks.

Lol depression isn't "sitting awake in bed all night thinking your life is going nowhere" ....it's more of an unconscious wave of despair but mostly for no reason at all, most likely accompanied with uncontrollable and unpredictable anxiety often leading to intense crippling conditions and irrational fears such as social anxiety. Your body is in a constant torment of pain, you literally can't exercise no matter what which then only makes everything worse. (Actually) Depressed people often get physically illnesses from the constant weight of their depression, others see taking their own lives as a better solution than to keep going. So yeah....
