Nice buck. Probably a once in a lifetime! I would leave it like it is. But I would look at finding an artist that could paint a picture of it with missing tine put on. That would be cool. Good luck deciding. Cheers. By the way I’m 68 and just picked up a 6.5 PRC. Absolutely loving it.

LOL its amazing how over gunned some guys want to be these days. 7 prc with a 180 grainer in a tree stand back east ROFL. Just bring the gun you use for deer back east, it will be fine. I've seen plenty of elk tip over with a .243 and a 85 grain barnes. The important part is putting metal through the vital bits. Other than that it really doesn't matter if you are using a .50 bmg or not, its gonna run off and you probably wont find it. If you are from back east and have never shot farther than 200 yards please don't buy a 7 prc and think it makes you Quiggley down under unless you have actually practiced and can read mountain/plains winds. Just remember boys, there are bow seasons for all the same critters in all the same places and grandpa did it with a 3030. New rifles are great, but you cant buy yourself into being a good shot unless you count purchasing ammo to practice with.

I completely agree. I think *most* people have unrealistic fever dreams about harvesting game at yardages greater than 400yds. At the distances 95% game is taken (even out west), a .308Win pushing a 150gr bullet with a G1 of .4 is going to do the job if the rifleman is capable of doing his.

Those antlers tell a story and let them speak it every time you see them don’t cover them and loose that. I know my first moose rack has a broke off tine from using the antlers as a lever to drag it out of a swamp and I always think of it fondly every time I see it. Your words on not needing a ton of velocity rings very true to my experience getting far more game with cartridges in the 30-30 to 6.5 Creedmoor range than many of the cartridges 30-06 and up that I have used. I am not personally a huge fan of Bergers, eldm and eldxs, but that is because of the significant amount of failures I have seen from all of them with people not understanding how they work or shooting far beyond their capabilities because they have a bullet with high bc. There are many benefits to bullets that work like that, but with my 15 years of big game hunting in central AK and never having a need for a shot over 300 yards high bc is nice though not necessary. Sorry for the rambling, but felt like I would put my thoughts out there while loving my new 7prc with 175gr ablr loads right at 2800 fps.

I have lived in Soldotna - Anchorage - Palmer and Wasila over the 30 years and my only work was from my guiding fishing and hunting from SE AK to all the way to the Arctic Reserve around the Red dog mine in the breaks of the Noatak R This is my own experience with clients that bring deer guns and deer ammo like the deer gun 30-06 and crap lead core bullet, I was nearly killed by a bull moose shot by a 30-06 that got back up as a approached it then it charged me and I was hit in the face by the horn as I rammed the CZ 550 9.3x62 into the brisket and fired killing the moose that landed on top of me. I have east coast idiots bring a deer gun 30-06 on a brown bear hunt in SE Alaska that every time it turned into life of death scare for us to finally find the bear shot and then kill it. The next common failure is all brains of lead core bullets than blow up just under the skin of Moose and large bears and even black bears they fail. I can't count the times Moose have just shrugged off being hit or gotten back up because a brand name lead core bullet frailer to even go into the vital organs it just blew up on the ribs. This was always such a problem I became very warry to walk up to a moose and one moose that could killed up I told the client shoot it again then the client refunded so I shot the moose and that 71 inch horn spread bull got back up ran 100 yards and crashed! If we had touched that Moose who knows what could have happened. We found only fragments of the Nosler AccuBond bullet in the neck just enough energy to stun the moose to fall down and lay there You should see the look on a client face when I feel the moose or bear isn't dead, I then shoot it again and the animal jumps up then crashed back down! I am really thankful back some 15 years ago when the owner of the Muldoon guns shop offers $200 dollars for the CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser to me because there was no ammo. It replaced the 338 win mag I had been using and the 9.3x62 Mauser with Barns TSX 286 grain bullets kills everything with one bullet

On the rack, my vote is leave it as found. I hate these scorings because they don’t allow for that massive beasts history. That rack tells a story. We don’t know the exact details of that story but we do know that it was a live beast that walked this earth and met with something that took that tine. The story lives in our imagination now.

Started hunting elk 5 years ago, shot two five point and 4 six point bulls since then. First two with 139 7mm interlock and dropped in tracks at 85 yards and 291 yards. Lost one with a broadhead and then our gunsmith convinced us to switch to ELDX. Most accurate bullet I have shot, we get 1400 yard 3 for 3 hits at a 24” target at 1400 yard, with a 30-06. BUT since the switch we lost 3 huge bulls two of which we dropped in tracks only to see them get back up and run away with no blood trail. One was upside down for 15 minutes. I then tested at same range we lost last bull and recovered 4 bullets from talcum powder dust backdrop. 3 of the 4 turned to lead dust and copper bits. If you hit a big rib or shoulder they can explode, dumping the energy outside vitals and that is essentially what a police less than lethal bean bag round does. It will knock them down or out but not kill them. I am now switching to accubonds

I have several 7PRCs. All shoot 3005-3015 fps with the 175 ELDX and 180 BergerVLD with 70.0 grains of H1000. All have 24" barrels but one, which has a 25" Brux barrel. These combos shoot half MOA or less. Brass is either new ADG or 1x fired nickel Federal. Your experience on that mule deer buck with your son's 7PRC just launched my confidence much higher. In my experience you are correct, you do not need peak velocities to kill. I have an old but very accurate 30-06 load that is also extremely accurate in multiple rifles but extremely slow - 185 Berger VLD, Lapua brass, 210 match primer, Varget. It's around 2450fps in my Tikkas and 2600 in my Brux barreled Rem700. Out to several hundred yards, it drops deer and passes through

Personally, I have found that ELD-M bullets have better terminal performance than Bergers, especially at lower velocities. I've had VLD hunting bullets pencil on more than one occasion. When recovered, they were just bent a little bit. The Hornady bullets alway mushroom perfectly. Just my experience, not a large sample size. I think the Bergers are very accurate, but kind of need magnum velocity, and maybe a little bit of shoulder bone to expand well. Others certainly may have different experience.

Repairing the tine is personal preference. It can't officially be added to the score but will add to eye appeal. Either way, the deer is a giant. What state did you shoot him in? Congrats on the deer. With berger bullets, do you find the hybrid target or the vld hunting bullets to expand better on game? A custom-built 7mm rem with a 1:8 twist will generally outrun a 7 prc in 24-inch barrel, and you can run them a bit hotter. My friends 23 inch, 7 prc likes 2825 to 2840 fps with h1000 and a 180 gr berger or eldm. It didn't shoot well at 3000 fps, and the load is way over 65k psi. I am actually a fan of the 7 saum in a medium length action. They will almost run with a 7 prc, and handloads will usually outshoot the 7 prc factory loads, especially in sub 22-inch barrels for guys shooting suppressors. Have you ever done load development for a 7-300 prc? It's quite fast and more efficient than a 28 nosler.
