Being a home mum for a couple of decades I understood THAT talent as wife, mother, daughter at the time. Then years into empty- nesting I began to really suffer terrible anxieties about using- investing my talents. I had some, but none that I saw as talents that served God. My anxieties were terrible that I had none to invest and please God. I became quite distraught! Doors closed everywhere I offered my only known Christian talent, service. I don't have actual observable talents, but I finally understand I do. Ridiculous amounts of capacity to pray, and word prayers. Presently, I suffer hope and pray, and try doing so in a joy. That's petty much all I understand that I have. I hope I'm investing God's sweet and wonderful talents to His delight. Ave Maria

This was a great message! Thank you so much! I love that you used this Parable (well both of them are two of my favorites). I love the Parable of the servants and 10, 5, and 1 talents. Not because of the story itself... though it is good... But what hit me was the set up. This was something Jesus said... Which made my heart finally understand... God KNOWS! Jesus knows that some of us have 10 talents... and some of us have 1 or few talents! He knows this, so its not the number of Talents you have, or even being the best. It's what you do with the one talent you've got. I've often thought that I was put on this Earth to never win. To always fail, but yet not give up.. lol... And maybe that is the case. I don't know... But I have taken Jesus's direction to.. "Try... Strive." to heart, because it seems like all I can do lol I also have learned that being Grateful for what I do have turned the Negative outlook into a positive one. Since I have started that, and actively praying more, and trying my lousy best. I've had Holy Moments, and even small moments that just help me to remember. He's there... Even if you don't feel Him.. He's there and always will be. God is on my side...that means even a nobody like me is doing ok! Viva Cristo Rey!

During a mass several months ago, the readings said to bring your talents. Being a crafty person I knew what I should do. Earlier this year I made pens with a picture I drew of our church's patron saint. Our church is pretty small and I made about 50 pens.

Hello, Father! I want to tell you how you help me everything in my process of conversion. I “lost everything”: health (need 3 organ transplants, which doesn’t seem feasible); career, beauty, independence, etc. A night I was desperately praying to God for help, I “heard” His Voice: “you are still resisting…” From that night on, I’m on a quest to grow closer to My Love- the First, the Best Love. You keep my company every night, most of those hours that pain keeps me up, and you bring me consolation and hope! thank you, and may God continue to bless you in you own quest!

I was meditating on this parable once, and something draw my attention: when the king scolded the bad servant, he told him that he at least should’ve put the talent on the bank for it to gain interests. And I wonder, in real life, what would be the equivalent of putting your talent in the bank?
@alisterrebelo90134 ай бұрын
I assume it would mean to get married and have kids. If you think you don't have talents, but having kids and catechising them well, you are multiplying the 1 talent (of the gift of life) that God has given you.
@adamvano34594 ай бұрын
Id say most fundamentally it means: if you dont activelly culticate it, at least dont hide it and it will have some return effect. Put it ou there and share it passively with others like 'this is what i have, do with it what you want'. So that it will literally gain peoples interest and they will make something out of it. Just like you lend money to the bank and let them do whaterver they want with it in exchange that they will return you some bit more. That way others will use it and cultivate it instead of you and it will multiply itself in a larger body. Concretely this might look like you being given a spirit of cooking and you dont try to cultivate it to be any expert chef but simply offer it to people that you can cook for them and you are a cook in a kindergarden. It is that you at least recognize it and put it to use. A more passive exaple might be that your child has a good voice and a potential for singing so you put them in a choir, or give them to someone to teach them. Or this might be a good example: you have inherited a field from your parents, but have no intention of using for growing anything so you dont just leave it abanadoned. It is better to offer it to your neighbour to plant and cultivate some crops there maybe in return of sharing some of the harvest with you or some other courtesy. And a closer relationship btw you two might come out of that. Or if you are afraid to be generous you can rent the field for a fee or even sell it and buy a larger land to pass down to your children. Not doing anything with what we have been given is a deep ingratitude.

What if you don't know what your talents are? Or feel like you don't have any? Seems as if so many of my peers around me have clear, God given talents and dispositions that steer them towards a vocational trajectory. I on the other hand, am left just looking around and scratching my head. I don't necessarily seem to be 'good' at much if anything. Trades, academia, business, etc.
@EustaceKirstein4 ай бұрын
Ah, then you should be deliberate about discerning what your "talents" are. You may have no natural talents (you probably do but theoretically you could have none). But we are not primarily talking about earthly talents here. "Without [God] you can do nothing" anyway. We are speaking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit given at Baptism and strengthened for mission at Confirmation. If you are Baptized, you DO have gifts, and if you are confirmed then those gifts have been FORTIFIED for the building of the kingdom. God has given you your specific set of gifts for specific purposes that he has designed for your life. He has made a special path for you to build the kingdom in a way like no one else can. Your vocation is going to hinge upon these gifts. Finding out what your gifts are and following them is going to be your fastest, happiest, and most joyous route to your calling in life. Look into "Called & Gifted" from the Catherine of Sienna Institute. This is a program for discerning and applying your Baptismal gifts. See if you can find a way to join a virtual group, or if there may be any near you. Surely they will get you access to a group to join and discern with regardless of any barriers.
@pinkpaprika84104 ай бұрын
People always seem to think talent is this amazing God-given gift that everyone else envies you. But in reality, it is often some small thing you love doing and keep coming back. Maybe you are good at listening to others, or improvising a good meal with leftovers… those are also “talents”, in Jesus’ sense of the word, when you put them at his service.
@alisterrebelo90134 ай бұрын
I was in a similar place as you and still kind of am. Speak to your Parish priest/pastor, just ask him what he needs help with and do the best you can. As you help the Church and meet people, the Holy Spirit will work through them to help you find your talents. Edit - Remember that marriage, having kids and catechising them and leading them to God is also an extremely important vocation and a pathway for yourself.

My reading of this parable has always been that it favored, if not salvation by works, then damnation for lack of work. It's not enough to repent and believe, you have to work as hard as you can or you might still be damned for failure to exploit the talents you're given, even if you can't figure out what they are.
@kkurova93454 ай бұрын
Well, that's quite a depressing and stressful take
@ctmcatholic4 ай бұрын
I don’t think we have to look at it that way, but as Catholics we don’t believe in “saved by faith alone” - we need faith, and to act faithfully, to live a good and holy life. I don’t think it’s a huge sin to not use your talents (or maybe even a sin at all), but on a human level it does seem like a waste and contrary to what Jesus calls us to. Katie
