Alternatively we can solve this problem using another formula without calculating semiperimeter. Area of isosceles triangle is A = b/4 √4a^2 -b^2 a= common side ..here 12 b = shorter side..here 6

Absolutely right. But keep this formula in mind as well. Heron's formula can be used in finding the area of any triangle if the sides are provided.
