The 2 Sherlock Holmes movies by Guy Richie have quite a similar feeling of the Victorian time period and are well worth to watch too.

11:17 "That whole scene made me realize that Jackie Chan must be an amazing dancer" Did you realize that that whole scene was in reference to a classic movie? Everything -- from the music and singing to the umbrella (and maybe even some of Jackie's moves) -- was a riff on the most famous dance number from Singin' In the Rain (1952).

Yes, Jackie Chan is an excellent dancer and there are a few dance scenes in "The Tuxedo", which I just got done watching for the umpteenth time last night.

That’s a pretty blazer! It matches your outlook well. If you ever consider action-packed movies, Jackie Chan’s Hong Kong movies are unparalleled (you can skip over his cheesy Hollywood stuff😂). Thanks for the reaction!

11:23 Bear in mind as you watch this scene that _fight_ training and _dance_ training tend to have a lot of crossover.

"The English are not very friendly." "They're just sore losers." "What did they lose?" "A little thing called the American Revolution, Chon." "Never heard of it." "I'll give you the highlights. They came over with about a million men. We had a bunch of farmers with pitchforks and beat 'em like a drum." Fact Check: True! ✔️ Fun Fact: In the film, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is portrayed as an Englishman, when in fact he was Scottish. When Worlds Collide Fact: This movie marks the first on-screen battle between Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen, who both have had success in Hong Kong, but had never fought each other before on-screen. Location Location Fact: Shot largely at the Barrandov Studios outside Prague in the Czech Republic with a predominantly British crew, filming was frequently held up as it was in the midst of a World Cup. The crew would disappear for 90 minutes to watch the English home team matches, much to director David Dobkin's bemusement. Casting Notes Fact: Director David Dobkin had a difficult time choosing a suitable Asian actress who could do movement work, emote well, and speak decent English. He then saw clips of Fann Wong's videos Heroes In Black (2001) and Legend Of The Snake Spirits (2001) and requested to audition her in London, which she did attend. She subsequently got the role and her number of scenes was increased by thirty percent.

Given Doyle's social class and roots in England, it's entirely plausible he would have spoken like an English gentleman. Not that I know one way or another.

It's crazy to think Aaron Taylor-Johnson played Charlie Chaplin in this but might be the next James Bond.

Jackie is actually an excellent dancer..in one of his 1st on screen dancing, he was in his early 20s and performed disco in a program called dance with me. He danced onstage with Anita Mui ....performed a James Brown routine in the movie " The Tuxedo" and most recently in 2024, at the age of 69, danced the swing with a talened young woman on a Chinese variety (charity?) Show.

Sherlock Holmes was played by Basil Rathbone in the 40's movies and Aiden Gillen played a guy named Rathbone.

3:59 A good movie, but it just didn't live up to the first. First, what happened to Princess Pei Pei and Falling Leaves? At the end of Part 1, Pei Pei was with Wang and Falling Leaves was with O'Bannon. They _explain_ what happened to Pei Pei, but why could they not manage to sign Lucy Liu and could they _really_ not manage to bring back Brandon Merrill? Had the first one left her with _that_ bad of an experience over the whole "acting" thing? Second, you can see this movie struggle with the same thing that _typically_ undercuts the performance of sequels. Part 1 was an action _thriller._ That means a _plot-driven_ story as opposed to a _character-driven_ story. That means they started with the _antagonists_ and got them _all fleshed out_ before they even _touched_ the protagonists. They made them superior in _every_ conceivable way but then gave the protagonists logical ways to _defeat_ them; in this case, _kill_ them. So they're not available, anymore. The _first_ movie in an action series tends to _rock,_ because it involves _protagonists_ adapted to _antagonists._ Sequels tend to _suck,_ because they tend to involve _new_ antagonists being adapted to existing, established _protagonists._

5:22 "China. My sister followed a _murderer_ to _London."_ That part doesn't make sense to me. Why England? We've got the US, the UK and China. Three countries, and the UN, nowadays, recognizes 195. If the murderer had to come from another English-speaking country, why England? Why not India? India actually _borders_ China, so that would make a lot more _sense._

Because then the murderer wouldnt have been 10th in line to the throne....or been abke to make a deal with a jerk who wanted to be emperor of China.
