@@claytonhodges7098the blockade wasn’t why, it was just an excuse for their navy being inept and minuscule the real reason was the lack of infrastructure and manufacturing, they couldn’t produce anything in high enough quantity or quality to fight back. they got plenty from the Brits and French, but couldn’t produce their own due to the lack of investment by the government in it!

I just stumbled upon this channel and I love it! I've recently gotten obsessed with the Old West and really want to write stories set in the time. As such, I'm finding a need to know everything and anything, so these videos are great! (and I greatly appreciate the little jokes and editing, very fun). In some of my obsessive researching I've found histories on coffee and cigarettes in the West, and all these videos are super interesting but I was wondering if you would ever make a video on what it was like to be a kid in the Wild West? (That is, childhood and being a child in the West, though, you know, I'd equally enjoy an entire video about 'The Kid' ;] ). Really do love and appreciate these! Thanks so much! They're great!

Without doubt the lever action rifle was the ultimate firearm to accompany the single action revolver in those times. Of course other manufacturers like Marlin & Remington produce near identical copies of the famed Winchester or Henry, but they were no match for the popularity of the Winchester brand. Sorta the Cadillac of the West. I love my anniversary'66 Yellow Boy

Well, not exactly, S&W made a much better revolver in the Schofield model and the Evans rifle was in many way much better than the Winchester series. Colt and Winchester faired better in most markets due to both their ruthless dealings with competitors and ability to spend much more on advertising and sales promotions than the smaller companies. Winchester and Colt came to an understanding that neither would step on the others toes by introducing competitive models. Iirc they came to this agreement after Colt designed and began outselling a lever action rifle and Winchester started doing a revolver line. The companies bosses met and agreed to take them off the market and not to fight each other. Winchester bought up several smaller companies after they introduced better designs, as did Colt except S&W wouldnt knuckle under and directly competed with Colt. They actually did better than Colt by moving into the European market and made millions of guns for them. The Czarist Russia actually adopted the Schofield and made a bunch more pistols than Colt ever did just in Russia.

Thank you I really enjoy your channel. Umarex USA, and others, are creating replicas of these rifles and pistols in the form of airguns. There are both BB and pellet versions of these guns. There are pistols and rifles that have fake bullet cartridges that you insert the BB or the pellet into. These bullets are then inserted into the gun the same way as the actual firearm. In the case of some of the rifles the discharged bullets get ejected when the leaver is cycled. I am not suggesting these should be used for reenactments but if you're interested in planking and target shooting they are great fun.

Thinking of the one found in eastern Nevada, it’s easy to get carried away imagining how it came to be there in the first place. I doubt they could get any DNA of it. Today they don’t have to have a relative to compare it to. They just need to map the sequence and feed into a database and if any relative no matter how distantly related could be discreetly contacted. I doubt anyone in a healthy state of mind would just forget/leave a rifle behind.⁉️🤔

The Rifleman used an 1892 Winchester which is a gross error given that the show begins in 1878.

I have a Henry, they were the first and I believe the best. The Henry and Winchester chambered for the 44 or 44-40 round was due for the reason people wanted a round they could shoot in either a rifle or handgun. Thereby not having to carry different rounds with them.

I find this rifle ironic and more complex compared to the Lancaster reapeater and the Evans repeater but there's a time when I was going for cartridges for my bolt action rifle for buck season I noticed the Winchester was on sale I though of buying it and see if it's any different from the Lancaster repeater but then me and some other cowgirl touched it at the same time and it was kinda embarrassing so I gave it to her and tipped my hat as a sign of respect and left the store with my new cartridges and now I lost the chance of trying the Lancaster but well it's better than being exposed to a cowgirl 😭🤧😇

It can be argued that the British Bull Dog revolver won the west or at least was the most popular gun. But a double action swing out cylinder made by the British might not be as romantic as a Colt, or Winchester. Personally I'd like to see more firearm diversity in westerns. Since like now people carried/owned a wide range of firearms. But enough rambling, another excellent video. Also much respect with having a new video for us every week. I really appreciate it.

The Henry repeating rifle is truthfully the first "assault rifle" while it doesn't fit exactly with the modern definition. The Henry, Winchester and other small caliber lever actions rifles were used in a much similar way to rifles today. It set in motion the philosophy of Small arms to this day. And we can never forget the man who designed most of the Winchester line of rifles. John Moses Browning.

Chuck Connors in the '60s tv western show "The Rifleman" opens the credits while strolling down the street hip firing a '92 about 12 shots in 10 seconds, so fast its difficult to keep count. So the politics is nothing new. Enjoy the episodes.

Absolutely, I truly believe that maybe with the exception of a huge "charge" coming at you, you could do just as well probably even better with a lever or pump action rifle the only thing that would get you is the magazine capacity or not having such a quick reload availability.

How about a video on firearms more common to the working class of Old West such as trade guns, revolvers made my Hopkins & Allen, Iver Johnson, Herrington & Richardson, Marlin, etc. as well as those Belgian imports and copies of Webley RIC revolvers. Also shotguns like the Zulu (breech loading shotguns made from French converted muskets-the 'Trabatierre') that I've seen in gun ads/catalogues dating to 1870's and as I understand, quite the common farm/ranch shotgun. Most old-timers could not afford the expensive Colt but could afford an Ajax .44 revolver at 1/4th the price. Ian at "Forgotten Weapons" did a book review of wholesalers' record of gun sales in old west era that was quite enlightening. Anyway, these old less know, but still historic guns are around and VERY affordable to those interested but on more limited budgets who want a part of the Old West. BTW: One older reference, maybe contemporary to era, referred to the less expensive revolvers as 'smokers', possibly due to more lax tolerances in manufacture, resulting in in more sideswipe between gap of cylinder and barrel. A guy in our collector's organization actually reloads and shoots these. He was a re-enactor for years and made point to never carry a Colt or Winchester, but one of these oddities. He used a Merwin & Hubert for a while I recall as his main sidearm as well as earlier mentioned Ajax. BTW2: If you do decide on this video, check out the 1939 version of Stagecoach, with John Houston's character handling a 1875 Marlin Tip-Up revolver.

Totally forgot to mention the Bulldog revolvers, both authentic British and the Belgian copies, as well as those solid frame, cylinder pin guns that were labeled in 20th Century as "Suicide Specials". (BTW There's a great book on them by that title. It also lists the 100s of names the relatively few basic makers would stamp on guns such as "True Blue", "Young America" and my favorite, "Tramp's Terror". I could just imagine the polite, Victorian lady, in Denver, San Francisco or Dodge City, buying a "Tramp's Terror" to feel some security, thinking about the vagabonds and vagrants inhabiting her fine city.) Also don't forget the pin fires, that must of had some level of distribution, since pin fire cartridges were listed up to WW1 in many US mail order catalogs indicating there was still some demand for the rounds.)
