It was the fact that they died at the same time that caused this effect. Now, Ranni wanted to physically die. If the knives normally fully kill, the timing can not be an accident. Which means it was orchestrated. Which suggests she's very deeply involved, but exactly how isn't known(yet). At the very least she was riding on the coattails of a murder plot.

But on the other hand it would of been insanely cool to see what Melania would look like and be If she blossomed once more and became a god, same with miquella if mohg hadn't been such a bitch, also same with ranni and godwyns death. It’s my personal take that Ranni planned the death of Godwyn to happen at the same time she killed herself so that her body would die but her soul would live. I think the reason she chose Godwyn was because she knew he was Marika’s favorite and she wanted to cause her as much pain as possible. Either she knew Radagon was Marika or she blamed her for stealing him away from her mother and leaving her mother heartbroken and insane.

Marika seems to have helped as you notice a phantom states Godwyn wasn't that loved for Marika as many believe and the Black Knives are very close to Marika as stated before thus many theories suggest she actually helped Ranni or pretended not to notice to shatter the ring as she doesn't align with the greater will either. Radagon seems to be Marika other half and probably uphold order so these two sides of the same god conflict each other.

Dude, i thought the same. The death of Godwin looks like a terrible crime, there is not a single character that cheerish that event. Just like Baldur, Godwin was loved by everyone. The intro video when you start a new game, plus the first trailer, basically give up some of these tidbits. You can see the black goop writhing out of Godwyn's body and his eye opens before rolling back, showing exactly that spread you mentioned. Though I think this was caused BY the corruption of the black knives + the fragment of death used to kill him. Godwyn becomes the prince of death against his own will. Ranni definitely planned for someone to die along her. I assume she only told Marika a part of her plan, the part where she kills herself in order to defy the Fingers and Marika, who wasn't happy with the Golden Order, agreed to help her with obtaining the Rune of Death from Maliketh (hence why some items state that Marika betrayed Maliketh). What Ranni DIDN'T tell Marika, though, is that Godwyn was supposed to perish as well. Or maybe it wasn't supposed to be Godwyn at all but someone else, we don't know. Either way, he died and Marika, who didn't expect that she would have a hand in death of her favorite son, snapped and shattered the Ring (which Ranni may or may not have planned, that too is tricky)... I doubt that Marika knowingly arranged and intended for Godwyn to die, there was no reason for that, it makes no sense. I believe that her ties to Numen and the assassin order were simply the means to provide Ranni with a way to die, no deeper scheme there, and Ranni somehow tricked some of the assassins into killing Godwyn too. That might explain why the assassins keep going after Ranni throughout the game - they too were deceived by her, along Marika, and wanted revenge. Our lunar princess is not a nice person...

Ranni cared for nothing else other than to separate her soul from flesh. If there was something greater planned, I highly doubt she would have remained hidden for however many eons she did, disguising herself as Ranni the Witch, no less. And she seems less than pleased about the way the realm has decayed over time. This coincides with her mentioning how she wishes to rid the realm of the Greater Will's influence. It doesn't really make sense that she planned Godwyn's death or Marika's madness. Her association with the assassins was only to produce a blade capable of "killing" a god, which she ended up using on herself, then simply vanishing and going into hiding, cutting contact with the rest of the realm. It's highly unlikely she was involved with the plot to kill Godwyn or any plot to bring about the end of the golden order.
@LastSecBloomer
@LastSecBloomer 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheConspiratorist I'm inclined to think so as well, the JP translations portray her as much less ruthless than EN lines, more interested in her own vision that tearing down the Golden Order (though, she doesn't hide her hatred for it). But that leaves the question who was supposed to be the other recipient of the cursemark of death, because it appears that if she was to receive the full one, she would have suffered true death, in both flesh and soul. For her plan to work, someone else had to die as well. Unless we misunderstand the whole cursemark, death and separating flesh and soul thing... On the other hand, if there was a separate plan to have Godwyn killed, the only one who could have done it is Marika, and that opens a whole other can of worms. I don't know, maybe we have to accept that Ranni is not so innocent. One more thing: Ranni was a Carian princess. Whether Rennala was her birthmother or stepmother, it must have been painful for her to watch Rennala lose her mind over Radagon's betrayal and she had Marika to thank for that. So, that's another strong reason to fool Marika and have Godwyn killed. I don't think she expected Marika to go as far as to shatter the Ring, though, I think that caught her by surprise...
@brentgarrison6245
@brentgarrison6245 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree. I don't think Ranni chose Godwyn at all, I think Marika did. The Black Knife Assassins are all Numen like Marika. They came to the Lands Between with her. And one guards her bedchamber before you face Morgott. They still serve Marika, even now. Then there is her ideology. We know what Ranni's is because she tells us (even if it's completely spoiled by awful translation and makes her look evil when she's actually out for the greater good in every way that counts). But what was Marika's? What was her cause, her ambition? Look at her dialogue, via Melina, at the Battleground Site of Grace in the Capital Outskirts. Look at the ideology and fate of the Crucible Knights, who once served Godfrey, First Elden Lord. It sure looks like Marika is a big time believer in personal growth and/or evolution through conflict and struggle. Marika breaks the Elden Ring specifically to bring about the Shattering. By tempting her children with fragments of power in hopes that they will clash to claim the rest. She knows she'll be imprisoned or destroyed for her actions by the Greater Will, taking her and Radagon off the table. Why kill Godwyn? Probably because he was the literal Golden Child. The perfect heir. Maybe he can end any conflict merely by asserting his rightful claim. By removing him, you not only help hide what Ranni has done (killing her body to escape the Two Fingers' control), but you remove the greatest potential obstacle to all hell breaking loose. Which very much appears to have been what Marika intended when she broke the Elden Ring.

@@CNNBlackmailSupport Pal you are confusing things a little bit. A fragment of the rune of death stolen from Maliketh was used to create the knives with wich Ranni and Godwyn were killed by carving a cursemark into their flesh. This mark was supposed to appear as a whole circle in the body of the first demigod to die. But it was split in half because two died at the same time, one died in body, one in soul. At the end of fia's quest you get the entire hallowbrand, wich is the rune carved into their bodies to kill them. The half rune you keep referring is this hallowbrand or cursemark, not the rune of death. The rune of death is unleashed into the world at the end of the game and has its very specific form. The rune of death is currently with maliketh until you defeat him. Destined Death is not what you think, it's the very opposite of what you just said and here's why: in the current eldenring, the rune of death is absent since Marika removed it and gave it to Maliketh to preserve it, doing so she removed death from the cycle of life and every being gets sent into the erdtree to reborn into its gold ray. The undeath is caused by the corpse of Godwyn that spreads the undeath trough the erdtree roots thathe has contaminated. Destined death is death without being reborn into the erdtree, is just absolute and everlasting death of body and soul. I hope it's more clear for you now.

Overall fantastic video, but I can’t help but feel people keep misunderstanding the Duskborn ending. It is patently NOT an era of destined or proper death, but of LIFE WITHIN DEATH. It is an era where the undead become part of the natural order and there is no sacred immortality for some and eternal death for others. Unless the rune Fia birthed went WAY off track, there is no way a woman who specializes in bringing the dead back to life would want death to simply be “back to normal”.
@mochimochi4179
@mochimochi4179 2 жыл бұрын
Yea that's actually what I thought it meant, reinstating the cycle of life and death. Still, going by what you said and what the video is saying, if undeath is a state caused essentially by the erdtree's unequal treatment of people, then making undeath a norm would be more equal than what we currently have.
@ZeFourmis
@ZeFourmis 2 жыл бұрын
@@mochimochi4179 Depends on what you call "undeath". If by "undeath" you mean "not dying" then it's because Marika gave the Rune of Death to Maliketh, specifically to prevent people from dying (or at least, I assume that's why). It is, I think, her first attempt to derail the plans of the Greater Will, that siphon the souls of the deads through the Erdtree. If by "undeath" you mean "being an undead creature, aka skeleton or zombies" it is a direct byproduct of Godwyn's death : his assassination by the use of the black blade birthed the flowers that rises the dead from beyond the grave.
@mochimochi4179
@mochimochi4179 2 жыл бұрын
So I had an epiphany that while we always obtain the rune of death in order to kill Marika regardless of ending, there's no confirmation that we too use the rune of death in the reforging of the elden ring. The fact that we don't need to have all possible great runes to reassemble the elden ring, the fact that we have a choice of a mending rune, implies to me that we can actually choose to just not use it. The age of fracture is supposed to be a shoddy attempt at returning things to the way they used to be before the shattering, aka the age of the erdtree with marika's golden order. So how does it make sense that Fia would want to restore death? Simple- undeath is unnatural, because DEATH is unnatural. Usually things get reincarnated by the erdtree, and although not explicitly mentioned I would assume that souls rejected by the erdtree for reincarnation probably aren't lamented. If I'm not wrong what Fia wants is to bring back the natural life cycle but with an added touch of optional immortality, the way it is in the world outside of TLB.

@simonwahlen7150
@simonwahlen7150 2 жыл бұрын
Well it is a bug caused by Ranni and the night of the black knives. The sealing of the rune of death means that nobody truely dies and when they "die" they are buried and return to the erdtree to be reborn. The true killing of Ranni's body and Godwynn's soul means that neither Ranni's soul or Godwynns body can return to the erdtree and reincarnate. The failed burial of Godwynn spread through the erdtrees roots and thus those who live in death are physicaly not allowed to die even though their bodies are already dead.

My reading is that the Mending Rune of the Death Prince brings life in death, an age of the undead - though perhaps with their souls intact - not true natural death. That is instead embodied in the Rune of Death which Maliketh reforged within his own body by consuming Deathroot, and the mending rune which governs the default 'age of fracture' ending - hence requiring completion of Faram to get the normal ending instead of the game letting you bypass the Erd Tree's wall of thorns as soon as you burn it.

The Cursemark of Death (in it's completion) looks similar to a YinYang, thus I speculate that a male target of equal bearing must have been chosen. ranni dying in body and godwyn dying in soul is due to each one having one half of the rune of death, as it seems that both halves have to be for the rune to be complete and take effect (hence why they die at the same time). so it could be that the reason godwyn was killed was because ranni wanted to lose her empyrean body but needed a soul to die alongside her body. also have you noticed that basilisks (idk what they are called in this game), look a lot like godwyn corpse (specially the eye, since their eyes were somewhere else in darksouls)? another observation ive made is that the dead giants atop the mountaintops of giants seemed to have died from the "death" effect (being impaled by a thorny spear sprouting from the ground). i personally couldnt make much of this other than that marika couldve used the rune of death against the giants in the war(since i read somewhere that she "cursed" the giants)

I still do not understand why it was Godwyn who had to die, why not another demigod, and still do not understand why Ranni did all of this, why did she murder Godwyn in such a dreadful way and cause the Shattering, she literally brought chaos and terror to the Lands Between just in order to free herself out of the Greater Will, it's insane.

Godwyn seems to represent the biggest threat to maintaining the Golden Order post-Shattering. Miquella was nowhere to be found; Malenia and Radahn crippled each other; Rykard was still "weak" according to Lady Tanith; and Godrick is, well, Godrick. Ranni doesn't actually did all of this. She just forged the blades with the rune of death and let the assassins do what they want - which is to break the Golden Order. Whoever demi-gods they chose to assassinate, Ranni would be free from her Empyrean form and the Greater Will's influence.

his real body, the fish thing, is infecting the erdtree because of the rune of death. that face in stormveil is an offshoot caused by the infection. the infection is also whats causing the undead in the lands between. i think they should have put more of them in the game to show how far the infection actually has spread instead of just one in stormveil.

At the end of all the catacombs, and Graves of Soldiers, after their bosses there are corrupted tree roots with people’s corpses intertwined with roots, and some of these rooms give Deathroots as rewards. I think these are the souls of people in the Lands Between, who once their soul is separated from their bodies, they return to the Erdtree roots, and rather than being reborn or whatever, they essentially rot and materialize in the roots like that

@@koruzhuv2.087 Yeah the whole point is that the current ruler Marika wanted to maintain their era forever so they removed death from the elden ring. It's very obvious that the erdtree is an abomination to the natural order which can be seen by how the whole lands between seems to be in a state of slowly decaying and how the Marika bloodline was being cursed as a sign that their reign would end soon.

@@koruzhuv2.087 Genuinely curious if that's true. Everything I've seen suggests the pre shattering era was a golden age, at least for humans, and that it wasn't natural entropy that ruined things, but the (probably) Ranni instigated night of black knives which led to the shattering. Keep in mind, the shattering isn't a super recent event by the time the game starts. I'd actually be a bit annoyed if they're going with the exact same plot about cycles they used in Dark Souls. Honestly Godwyn’s fate is grotesque. First his soul is murdered by his own sister because she wanted to be free from the Greater Will, then his vegetable body is dumped at the bottom of the Erd Tree roots where it somehow mutates from a shining golden prince into a rotted weird clam/fish thing. All while still technically alive on body but not soul. And Fia wants this to be the new norm? No thank you. The fact Godwyn’s friend Fortissax despite being corrupted by the power of death, still defended him from Fia and us in the dream shows that he doesn’t want his friend coming back as the Prince of Death. IMO this is one of the worst endings next to frenzied flame.

^ This is one of the main reasons (along with her murder of D and the impression that Godywn wouldn't have wanted this for himself/it goes against what Fortissax was trying to do for him) that I really can't bring myself to like Fia, tbh. Like... I don't agree with the Golden Order's unsympathetic approach towards Those Who Live in Death (because it probably isn't their fault that they ended up becoming shambling zombies) and some of the specifics of D's brother's angry rant at Fia were just unnecessary, but I also can't agree with Fia's goals or take on things, or disagree with D and his brother's opposition to her and the existence of Those Who Live in Death/can't say I agree with the take that the Golden Order, however flawed, is all bad either. But that's just my unsolicited (and admittedly kind of salty) opinion.

". All while still technically alive on body but not soul." Dunno why that's supposed to be an issue. If his soul is dead, he's not bothered by whatever is going on with his body, since he no longer exists. It's purely irrational to care what happens to your corpse after you are dead.

Godwyn's story mirrors Baulder's from Norse mythology with a more hopeless tone it seems. D doesn’t have the rune of death automatically. He explicitly tells us the first time we meet him(after killing the boat-ghost boss) that the rune of death is in that village, he probably finds it and then goes to the round table hold. Very interesting video! I've been putting off watching anything about the lore until I finished the game for the first time, and now I've finally done it, I am so ready to dig in and come up with my own theories For instance, my current theory for why Godwyn was killed in the first place is....... because he was secretly Ranni's twin brother??? Twins/other halves are a big theme in the game after all, and as far as we know, Ranni is the only Empyrean without anything really resembling one. So what if... all Empyreans are born with a twin, and the two twins are mostly independent but also to some degree the same person. One soul in two bodies, like D. After all, the only way for new Empyreans to be born is for an Empyrean to somehow have a child without any other parent, right? Maybe that is a way of saying having a child with their own soul-twin So if any of that is true, Ranni must have a twin as well, as she is definitely an Empyrean. And who better to be the secret twin of the Daughter of the Moon than the Golden Son himself? It would explain why the Night of Black Knives ended in both of their deaths, as her goal was to free her soul from a physical form to protect it from the influence of the Outer Gods. If her soul was SHARED with Godwyn, then she would have to kill both herself AND him to truly be free It is their two halves of the centipede mark that end up making a whole rune in the end, is it not?

I dunno why a lot of people in the comunity are trying to "wash" ranni's actions saying that it was marika the one behiden the Night of the Black knives . Admit it, she plotted with her Fingers to kill the soul of his step-brother just so she could betray the same fingers, kill her body and be free from the influence of the greater will. Marika had nothing to do with the black knives, it was all planned by Rannie and her fingers.
@thedarkgenious7967

So here's the thing; Ranni plotted against her Fingers; they were instruments of the Greater will, after all, and she actually murders them as part of her quest. though I could see Goddwyn's death being her fault though, since it seems that if she hadn't had him "killed" at the same time as she killed her body and freed her spirit, she'd have likely died fully and been screwed.

I think all the gods are crazy shape shifters. Marika transforms into a dude and back on the regular, Ronni went to great lengths to kill herself, rather then be transformed into something else by the 2 fingers, and of course godwin turned into, what ever he is now. Hell it would not surprise mke if the gods and the 2 fingers were actually 2 different stages of life of the same wierd species. All the towers are topped with the body of a deceased 2 fingers, except for one toped with Ronni's old body. Why put the body of a god where normally only the bodies of 2 fingers are located? Well what if the gods and 2 fingers are one in the same.
