I have an Oneida Compound bow on my bow rack. I have had it for 24 years. I stopped using it about 20 years ago when I returned to "primitive archery." I switched from a long bow to a compound in the 1970's after 20 years of shooting. I became disenchanted with compound bows when I discovered the need for a bow press and other specialized tools. I am much happier shooting one of my horse bows.
@davisrs12 жыл бұрын
You don't need a bow press or any specialized tools for an Oneida. A set of Allen wrenches and a screwdriver is all you need. Been shooting one since the '80s as well as long bows and Indian and York recurves.
@davisrs1 Жыл бұрын
@The Banned I've replaced many of those with standard SAE bolts. And I have scraped out many a longbow with glass shards and steam bent the tips. I'm done doing that at 82.

@@davisrs1 at 82 I’m glade to see your still shooting 👍 I started on compounds in the late 80’s as a child… but lost interest bc I only shoot fingers and instinctual. Over the years compounds got shorter and shorter until my last one a PSE was only 38 inches ata. Nowadays they are 27 inches and a 36 is considered a long compound. I want to start again with an Oneida but they are expensive in NZ at around $2500 nzd

@@alansutton2858 Find a good used Aeroforce. They were one of the first adjustable Oneida bows and the draw curve has not changed much over the years. It's a good fingers bow but heavy at 5 lbs. I shoot a Screaming Eagle at 50 inches 31 inches draw, but those bows had no draw length adjustment.
@fiatcampagnolaadventures2 жыл бұрын
Hi Armin. I am very familiar with Oneida bows, I bought the first one in 1988, the Screaming Eagle, which was the fastest compound bow on the market at the time, 228 FPS AMO if I remember correctly. I was one of the very few in Italy to use it, I also hunted a lot. I still have it fully functional! Then I bought an Aeroforce X80: faster, but also heavier. Finally in 2003 I got a Black Eagle ESC which looks a lot like the one you are using and with which I have hunted several wild boars. I love the Oneida but now they are no longer the fastest compounds: soft traction curve, usable with the fingers, if the string breaks when hunting you can easily replace it, they looks so beautiful!. As a rest I have always built a rounded wooden "L" attached with the double-sided tape on which the arrow slides. The big problem of all Oneida for seexperience are 2: the Yoke cables (the steel cables with a larger diameter) break easily at the point where they make the angle on the cams (the maximum peak load point of the bow to be clear) due to wear: bend after bend the metal will fray and break and it is not easy to get parts from the USA. The second problem is that the inside face of the limbs tends to splinter with the shots, it seems not to withstand the forces in compression. I used 600 grs heavy hunting arrows with the bow set at 60# and 30" draw length. Greetings!

Its been 2 years but I figured other might want to know. The reason he was shooting to the left is becuse his arrow rest was attached too far to th left. The true center of the bow is about 10-30mm to the right of where his shelf was located. To fix this buy a screw in shelf that allows you to ajust the position left of right. Once you get it right in the center your shots will ring true every time.
@strydyrhellzrydyr13452 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. just use the shelf they gave you.. I think it looked like u shot a bit Less to the left... Meaning a bit more towards the center, when u used the regular shelf. Gosh what a lovely thing... Someday. I'll get one.

You are right. The arrow was past the center of the bow and there is nothing you can do to make the arrow go straight. Shooting with fingers the arrow has to go on the outside of the bow centerline.

I shoot an older version of that bow, and at first mine always went off to the side too, and I found the solution was to use a stiffer arrow. Much stiffer spine than you would use for a recurve bow with the same draw weight. Maybe try using arrows with a stiffer spine and see if that corrects it for you? My Oneida is set at 50 lbs draw weight just like my 50 lbs recurve, but it needs arrows with a much stiffer spine than my recurve. Also, I shoot mine with a wire flipper rest, but I'm shooting it on the inside of the bow with a split finger draw.

I've been shooting compound (wheelie) instinctive with bare thumb draw for a few years now, just got my first traditional (a Kaya) a few months ago. I shot way to the right with the trad in the beginning. And likewise, when I switch back to the compound I shoot way to the left now. Mainly shoots the trad now, because then the arrows won't go through the barn walls or disappear into the ground on misses.

Nice. Very nice video. Timely also. I have had several questions concerning the Osprey. Frankly I never considered it. Thank you for cutting edge archery reviews. I would very much like to see Oneida make an optional straight or non shelfed riser. A riser which would resemble a double bow with dual shelfs. Such a setup would be versatile, frankly, more interesting to me.

That bow looks cool.! This looks like the same kind of thing they are doing in buhtan where they shoot primitive, horse bows, recurve, compound, just about any kind of bow you can imagen. And they are shooting just about every type of draw thats out there with out a mechanical release. I think this is going to be important with all the world changes and breaks in supply lines, people will be looking to adapting to what they have on hand. I know one guy who has been waiting over 2 months for a replacement string on his compound bow thats not an exotic model. I know you can adapt to the pointing type of aiming with that kind of bow (as we do in most thumb draw kinds of archery). But it seems with a knocking point and a specific anchor point you could put a sight on that bow and be pretty accurate at distance. With this kind of bow you could also shoot a wide range of arrows plus one that have vanes..

It will work, been thumbing with super recurve ILF setup for years One thing to notice, do not use double torque technique on any ILF setups when shooting thumb, learnt a very expensive lesson by twisting a set of $900 ILf super recurve limb in a year. Hello Armin, I would very much like to see more videos of your progress with this particular bow. I am very interested in acquiring one. Which is a bit strange considering that I am an absolute neophyte to Archery. My significant other and I recently decided to take up Archery, practically yesterday ** Almost not an exaggeration. I bought a few bows already. An SAS 54” Recurve 22lb Takedown Bow/ 58” Recurve 35lb Takedown Bow * (Black Hunter knockoff), and a 60” Longbow, also 35lb takedown Bow, which I can interchange the limbs with the Recurve Bow, the risers are virtually identical. I hold the bow in my left hand, which feels natural, and all three bows have the Arrow shelf on the left side too. However, watching this video I noticed that you also hold the Bow with your left hand but feeding the Arrow on the right side, which seems like it makes more sense to my mind. I bought the three bows because they were a very good deal, and it seems like feeding the arrows across the bow was the most conventional anyway. However, if I purchase the Oneida Osprey, I am inclined to get it with the orientation of feeding the Arrows on the right, while also holding the bow with my left hand. I would like your thoughts regarding the side to feed the Arrows on a Bow in that price range. I am totally prepared to learn from both sides if necessary… BTW: I appreciate the cadence and demeanor of your videos… Thanks 🤔

Impressive how you managed to avoid destroying the white spot on your target! 😂 For a compound, it looks good. Performance wise, it's still looking good. Am I convinced by compounds? Nope! (don't tell me it's raining in Malta. I live in Le Havre, and we have another definition of rain)

It doesn't look like the bow itself does anything. All the energy seems to be contained within the pulley mechanism. I wonder why the frame is so complex? The Oneida live next to us - the people of the standing stone, part of the Iroquois Confederacy.

Thank you for such a great idea for my wife's birthday!..she is more traditional than myself, however i still love a recurve as well..but hunt with compound.

I think it is a left hand bow so you should be holding it with your right hand and pulling the string back with your left hand.

of course it is, I esp ordered it to shoot it with thumb draw

You need to get a whisker biscuit arrow rest.
@ArminHirmer2 жыл бұрын
yeah but it will not work with fast shooting :)

I'm actually making a lever action bow with a more traditional handle so shooting thumb is easier. I can tell you are impressed with the speed of the bow when you let a "jesus christ" slip out.

Great bow with correct arrow rest but £800 starting silly when you can get a ready to hunt + bear compound £380 from merlin archery 320 fps... or buy a real horn bow or hybrid and enjoy traditional archery with real skill development... saying that it is a beautiful bow but acquired taste great review as always Armin

of course. one can get a Canon camera , which takes photos or a tripple priced Leica, which still just takes photos.

My Aeroforce likes heavy and stiff arrows. Maybe Your arrows are a little bit to weak

I have an oneida phoenix that is set up for traditional western style. Please be careful shooting wood arrows out of that bow armin, especially if you take the poundage up.
