One of the reasons Arnold admired Sergio was because unlike Arnold who had Joe Weider as sponsor with Joe paying Arnold apartment rent, car and University education, Sergio worked full-time in a very hot industrial plant sometimes working double shift and still continue to get better as a bodybuilder.

Arnold and Franco worked building construction after training for years until 1974 when Arnold booked the film Stay Hungry. After he retired in 1975 Arnold mainly lived off speaking tours and merchandise sales (books, clothes, posters etc) until Conan.

It is the GREATEST bodybuilding photo of ALLTIME period. Even Arnold knows he lost that Olympia. To this day nobody can touch the Myths proportions. A 59" Chest tapering down to a 27 inch waist. 22.5 inch guns and 30 inch quads. They broke the mold with the MYTH.

I honestly think Sergio would’ve done better now w/ modern resources at his disposal than he did then. He has more of a cartoonish, Phil Heath type of look. Arnold’s structure for his day was just unbeatable, like Bumstead in classic today.

The pic of Sergio & Arnold side by side in a double biceps pose shows Arnold's glaring leg deficiency. It also shows one of his greatest strengths, lats that damned near start from his waist. I'm not sure where "cartoonish" comes in on Sergio, I see a very balanced, symmetrical physique. Arnold, if anyone, has what cartoons depict as a muscleman's body...huge beefy upper body with relatively thin legs.

Arnold had better overall conditioning, and more favorable posing, but even the man himself admitted in his book Education of a Bodybuilder, that Sergio was in a different class than anyone he'd ever faced..... @@jsims1617 the cuts are down to his conditioning not his genetics, if Sergio had worked anywhere near has hard as Arnold he would have always beat him, Arnold recognized this himself, unfortunately for Sergio he just didn't have the workrate and passion that Arnold did, similar to how Dorian Yates was able to beat Flex Wheeler, Dorian said himself he had to outwork Flex because he wasn't as gifted genetically, Sergio's genetics for bodybuilding are arguably the best EVER, he just didn't fulfil his potential despite him still being a legend.

Arnold was the better bodybuilder. Better conditioning and a superior poser, just overall better presentation. But sergio was no doubt genetically superior! His proportions were pretty insane head to toe and sporting an incredibly small waist! If he had that flair that Arnold had, being able to get conditioned enough and have the ability to out-pose him, then he probably wouldn't lose a show ever again. The way he looked at that time period was mind-boggling! Sergio in the off-season had that Victor Richards type mass, only 3 decades earlier! A genetic marvel!

@Lucien Yeah, for all of those reasons. From what I heard, he only started to care about what he ate 3 weeks before the Olympia because it was so easy for him to win. He treated it like an additional paycheck from what I see. He didn't live and breath bodybuilding like Arnold did, nor did he have the chance to like Arnold did.

In 1973/74, Sergio challenged Arnold to face him in an international contest held in Mexico. In the 73 contest held about a month before the Olympia, Arnold was in the audience and was scheduled to do a posing exhibition. After winning the competition, Sergio challenged Arnold to come on stage and face him right then and there. Joe Weider was also in the audience, took to the stage, and announced that Arnold would only compete in defense of his title, and Arnold's exhibition was cancelled. However, Franco Columbu was also in the audience and agreed to face Sergio on stage in a posedown that Sergio won (I'm not sure if other bodybuilders were also involved in the posedown). Upon hearing the complaint that he tried to pull an unfair stunt to face Arnold not at his peak, Sergio responded by challenging Arnold to train for the next year and face him in 1974 on neutral ground, but of course Arnold chose not to face Sergio anywhere but at Weider's Olympia. Sergio won the International title held again in Mexico in 1974, and the split with the IFBB continued for many more years. Arnold pulled a stunt to trick Sergio to momentarily walk off stage at the 1970 Olympia, and then seeing Sergio in superior shape in 1972, he talked judges into using a back room for prejudging that had brown panels in the hopes that this would wash out some of Sergio's conditioning. Even so, Franco Columbu, to his credit, always claimed that Sergio got flat out robbed by Weider/IFBB in the 72 Olympia. Instead of protesting the tricks/stunts used by Arnold, Weider praised Arnold for his cleverness and "strategic" thinking, but Sergio's challenges in 73 and 74 outlined above were promoted as unfair stunts.

I suspect that even if I produced the mag and the quote that you would claim Franco was misquoted based on your irrational insistence that he never said such things...even though I have pointed to where such evidence of him doing just that can be found. You have nothing supporting your bogus claim. Nothing. In any case, others more honest about this, and who may also have copies of Muscle Builder/Power (later Muscle Builder) and/or other Mags wherein Franco's comments were recorded will likely recall what Franco said, and they do not have a problem with it as you seem to irrationally have. Some of the specifics that I do recall include Franco quoted as saying in an article that he could not believe how Arnold was given the decision because while they were all warming up, he said that he could almost wrap his hands completely around Sergio's waist, and that his chest was ripped and super thick while Arnold was not at his best. Nobody touches the MYTH. Those proportions are unique to this day. His chest was 32 inches bigger than his waist. Arnolds chest was 23 inches bigger than his waist. Sergio Oliva the GOAT.

Sergio had the better frame with a better shoulder to hip taper and his arms were proportionately larger than Arnold's. That's it. Sergio was never very defined. He had very little detail in his quads and his abs were always smooth. Arnold was huge with pleasing lines and much better definition.

In Arnold’s autobiography he states that there was only one bodybuilder over the course of his entire career that he legitimately worried about and had to change his mindset, training, diet etc in order to beat. Only 1 guy ever that had the edge on him. That guy, was Sergio. Arnold would not have reached the level he did if it wasn’t for Sergio.

For me Sergio wins hands down, his incredible genetic advantage is very obvious. Arnold looked great but it was clear that Arnold was a heavily financed and groomed star for Weider and Hollywood. Arnold had all doors opened to him because he was white, and the Weiders had a racist agenda. Some may disagree, but ask Robbie Robinson, he knows all too well what game the Weiders were playing with their token treatment of very few black champion bodybuilders on their payroll. Sergio was pushed to on side after he cleaned up at the Olympia in ‘67, ‘68,and ‘69 when the Weiders realised Arnies image could be marketed easier and make more money in the blatantly racist era of the early 70s.

The Superior Poser argument is shear utter NONESENSE. Back in the day, ALL Bodybuilding Contest were PRE-JUDGED. That is a series of compulsory poses were used to decide the placings. NOT Free Style poses. These poses presented the body in a clear manner and all were done identically too. SO THERE IS NO BETTER POSER! Only a better BODY to decide. The Pre-judging event was also a way for promoters to earn extra money. Since a separate viewing fee was charged to the public to see the event. The evening shows had Lighting Effects, Free style posing and Pose Downs just for entertainment purposes. The placings were already judged and decided upon. Hence the term PRE-JUDGING. The 1970 Olympia was also Pre-Judged. The Weider Magazine made up the Fairy Tale about Arnold tricking Sergio into walking off a Dias prematurely that allowed Arnold to win the show. Yes, it did happen, but it did NOT affect the placings. The contest was PRE-JUDGED. But you are RIGHT about Sergio NEVER losing a show. After Sergio was thrown out of the I.F.B.B. in 1973, he did NOT lose a contest in over ten years until the 1984 & 1885 Olympia, when he was well past his prime.

Sergio Oliva was a one of a kind bodybuilder for his time. Arnold himself admitted that Sergio was phenomenal. In 1972 Essen , West Germany Sergio definitely was the better bodybuilder. When the two men were able to compete with each other Arnold won the Mr. World in 1970. Sergio was definitely smoother. Arnold was a fantastic bodybuilder, but he had defects in his physique. He had long limbs that at times didn't match his upper body. He was his best in 1975. Everything fit together at its best for him. And yes, Joe Weider definitely had his hand in the decisions between Sergio and Arnold. He knew which one of the two men was best for his business and he made sure that he was on top of the bodybuilding world.

I think Sergio could have had a better physique. This is a guy who ate twinkies and drank Mountain Do while in training. Also, his posing was very rudimentary. With a great diet and excellent posing, he would have been unbeatable. Arnold also had a great physique but what set him apart was his charisma, his posing, and his ability to connect with the crowd. He had a magnetic personality while Sergio just had that incredible physigue.

Well, I've read all of the comments and noticed that there's one common but irritating thread among most of them: The Austrian's symmetry. It’s close. Their comparative shape and proportions are different. Sergio has better back, quads and arms. Though Arnold has a great chest, shoulders, biceps and calves and conditioning looks great. But it all depends on lighting and exposure. Sergio’s pics don’t do justice to his physique. His victory pose is unbeatable. His front pose with that tiny waist and huge arms is awesome.

And he did it even with the odds and circumstances against him. 1971 Sergio was better by a little. 1972 is the same. 1973 Arnold doesnt beat the 1962 Sergio. However, Arnold has the advantage of being taller better side chest and biceps peak.

For as much as Arnie use to joke around in his bodybuilding years he had a insane dedication. Where Dorian Did more of a Hit/metzger Training Arnold went the other route, 45min for Dorian little rests Arnie did 3-4 hours 6 days a week. For all that blabbing I agree with Most in comments Arnie i choose do to a better work ethic

I am a fan of Sergio Oliva, but it seems unfair to underestimate Arnold. Sergio's biceps lack peak while Arnold's biceps (right one is better) have nice peak. Sergio could easily beat Arnold when it comes to forearms.

Sergios back was wider but lacked the detail of Arnold's back. You can also see how Sergio leaned back a lot in his side chest shot, because he knew he was lacking in chest thickness compared to Arnold. (Arnolds chest even then was known for thickness.) Neither one of them had any legs at all, to be honest. Close call.

Sergio is great but I don't see how he could even come close in these compairsons? For example in the front double sergio always looked thin since he had no big rib cage, no depth and those high lats weren't helping tbh

Sergio didnt do vacuum and this mean he didnt breath-in to expand the rig-cage like Arnold did. At least partially this is where your impression comes from.

@@seanwagoner4160 yeah, in the same state it's bigger but the obvious logic should tell you that there's a reason why bodybuilders use the vacuum - it makes the waist appear smaller and the chest area bigger. So to summarize it for you - Arnold ribcage is bigger when vacuum and smaller when not. Sergio didn't do vacuum while Arnold did. Sergio with vacuum would appear bigger than with no vacuum. Is it clear enough?

@@ryutenmen No. Arnold structurally bests sergio because of wider clavicles and ribcage. Sergio is narrow and 5’9 with a small skull that makes him appear wider. Arnold’s ribcage is bigger than sergio’s. Bodybuilding is not merely about ratios.

Sergio wasn't better. He looked very smooth compared to Arnolds best years. His biceps lacked definition and separation from the triceps. His waist looked unnaturaly small with huge thighs which gave him a weird shape.

Was no good pics of Sergio fromback them.Olympia 1972 went came out on the magazines,Sergio was lot better,we had posters at the Gym.I saw both personality,Arnold in 1974 in PR at his best,and Sergio in1985 or 86 in Miami in the way to return to the Olympia stage.Sergio was in person a lot more big,complete and impressive that Arnold,even he was much older that when he was on his prime.

buy Arnold out-thought Sergio all the time... one example, he got the background at the competition changed from white to black, to make the white guy stick out more and the black guy disappear. another was when he gestured to Sergio to leave the stage, Sergio walked off and Arnold then turned around and walked back on stage and continued to pose. Arnold offered Sergio, a part in Predator, but Sergio was still pissed and turned him down.
