Arnold was hugely different between 1974 and 1975 so some pictures of 1975 look a lot smaller and less muscular than his pictures from 1974. Arnold was packing on 18 lbs of lean muscle mass more in 1974 than he was in 1975. It shows in overall fullness, thickness from side and leg size and conditioning superiority of 1974 over the 1975. I think all pictures of Arnold should be from 1974.

Arnold himself said at the 2019 Arnold Classic Q&A that he weighed 248 lbs at the 1974 Olympia and 230 lbs at the 1975. He did not gain the same muscularity back in 1975 because of the "Stay Hungry" movie when he shed most of his muscles to go down to 200 lbs for the movie.

Yeah it's a shame the 74 arnold was not captured on film. When we think about him we automatically have the footage of pumping iron in mind where he was not at his best. He was supposed to retire in 74 actually but the pumping iron movie made him compete on more year.

From what I have heard, he was unreal (and it is clear from pictures). A few years ago, I saw a grainy black and white video of Arnold on stage with Lou Ferrigno from the 1974 context in MSG and he looked huge in that video. That video is no longer there. Not sure why it was taken down.

I’m sorry but it’s clear that Arnold would still beat them because what he achieved on way less drugs is unreal. He beats Haney in a lot of poses and the incredible part about that is that Haney was a full time totally dedicated bodybuilder until he retired. Arnold has a really nasty knee injury in 72 and what he achieved for 73 is ridiculous for the tune frame. After 74 he lost all his gains to do a movie and only came back at the request of Pumping Iron filmmakers but partied throughout the whole time. Had Arnold continued to build on the 74 physique and pushed on up to 79/80 he would have been unreal. Haney peaked in his thirties whereas Arnold retired at 28. That’s a huge difference.

Arnold is such a master at posing. You can see he spent hundreds/thousands hours perfecting his presentation. Look for ex at the pray mantis pose, the way he leans back. He knows how to magnify himself and project a magnificient image. Haney does not possess that ability. He's hitting the poses but there's no magic.

I am 66 years old and grew up in Bethlehem, Pa. I worked out at a gym where we would go to NYC to watch all the major shows. I was at the 73 and 74 Mr Olympia, and Arnold was bigger in 73 but more in shape in 74. I saw Lee Haney at the 84 Olympia, and I thought and still do that either the 73 or 74 Arnold would have won the show.

Lee Haney was Dorian's height so he never was 5'11". He was more around 5'10" and Arnold standing beside Lee had around 4 inches on him back in the younger days when Arnold had not shrunk at the 1997 reunion of all Olympians. Arnold had a much bigger frame and his chest, arms, calves, overall lines and shape were simply unbeatable. Lee was competing in a much more modern era when a lot more emphasis was on legs so Arnold in the same era would have had been a lot better. Like Ronnie said, if Arnold competed in the same era, no one would have touched him.

This was an Arnold fanboy video. First of all, this is 2 completely different era's. Arnold himself said he had wide hips that's why he always did a ton of twisting poses. Haney didn't have to twist to the side even though he did in some poses but it wasn't to hide weak points because he didn't have any. All those who say Haney had under-developed arms and legs, but it sure is funny how balanced and proportionate Haney was from every angle. Haney had the symmetrical qualities of the smaller guys like DeMey and Labrada, but still out-massed and outclassed the rest of the fields he competed against. Arnold's back was average, Franco's back was much better. His delts were also kinda weak, especially his rear delt. Another weakness Arnold has that no one points out was his triceps, and his legs were shit, and he had a wide waist from the front again that's why he always twisted to the side. Find a pic of Arnold doing a front double from a STRAIGHT ON ANGLE. Lee Haney was 250 pounds with a short, compact torso with a 27 inch waist, not mention small hips and tiny joints with Phil Heath roundness and muscle bellies are you f*cking kidding me? How can you compare Arnold to a man that was 3 inches shorter than Arnold but competed 10 pounds heavier and in better condition? Do we even have to bring up the rigged Olympia victories courtesy of the Weider boys? Did Lee Haney have to cheat like Arnold to win? Did he lose one contest during his reign? I ain't even a big Haney fan (Actually I'm a Heat fan) but I recognize greatness and he was the best.. Even Ronnie said it.

Both great champions. Very hard to judge since the picture quality is lacking. I would LOVE to see some high resolution, color shots of them both in all of these poses. Arnold's pure size, body structure & muscle shape are hard to beat. Haney's beautiful taper from wide shoulders & monster lats down to his tiny waist equally hard to beat. Haney's V-shape is truly amazing, very much like The Myth, Sergio Oliva. Hard to say which is superior. Both were the best during their respective careers.

Arnold of 1974 was his last hurrah as he was not going to look past that. He would not allow himself to be defeated, so he came in at his most thick and sculpted. Only the Pumping Iron documentary brought him back to the stage. The film needed Arnold to train for one last shot. And Big Lou was to be his nemesis.

Imagine taking 74 Arnold and giving him a modern trainer, nutritionist, as well as the latest supplements, equipment and technology etc. Arnold would have looked absolutely INSANE. He also didn't have the luxury of looking back on decades of Mr Olympia's and learning from them. People like to harp on Arnold's leg size but back then people probably didn't know legs could even get to the size which they did later on. I am sure if Arnold could have seen what Ronnie Coleman-calibre legs looked like he would have built his a lot bigger. It simply was not needed to be Mr Olympia in the 70's, although his legs in 74 were pretty impressive.

Arnold has always been my favourite bodybuilder, as I started following the sport in 1980 when he won his last Mr O. However, Lee does compare very favourably with Arnold. And may be the only Mr O who does? Lee has a small waist and small hips, and really doesn't have any weaknesses? Sure, some might say his biceps are a bit small - but that's only compared to Arnold. If you look at Haney's front double bi at 3:20 his arms look pretty good, and same goes for the most muscular at 10:00 or the lat spread at 4:20. Haney's front double bi is really impressive! His shape and those lats - WOW!! I prefer Arnie to Lee, but I'd take Lee over Dorian, Ronnie or Phil anyday.

You can't really do anything to alter the type you have- some people are super lucky to have super-uniform abs such as Dexter and Lee Priest. There was picture that used to hang in the (long gone) San Gabriel(Ca.) Astro Gym of Arnold hitting a Front Lat spread taken at sort of a side angle, it looked beyond human. This was long before "Photoshopp",& retouching was pretty obvious. The picture looked legitimate supposedly from the 73 Olympia. 73-4 were supposed to be his best where he showed up in the high 240's and diced. I had a buddy who was an Olympic Lifter, his Dad was an old time lifter and former Olympic teammate of John Grimek who brought him up around the strength athletics. They attended the 73 Oly, & John always swore that picture was authentic, that Arnold was his most insane that year.

Recently went through my 1991 magazines, showing some 1980's fotos. 2nd time watching this video of 2 of my favorites and 2 of the very best. Again i find myself giving total-lee the edge. But bodybuilding is probably the most subjective sport there is especially from a fans standpoint. Like for instance when comparing their back double bicep and some people loving the 🎄 on arnold whereas i find it slightly detracting. While impressive in order for arnold to attain the 🎄 and hold it in this pose suppresses his back width and outer lat lines. My goodness lee's rear delts and traps running into his rhomboids is insane. Lee's legs tie in better with his body better proportionally speaking. The oak is a beast though and i can see why many would give him the nod as well.
