A lot of people think the team was called the “black” Sox due to the scandal, but in reality they had the name well before the scandal. The owner was so cheap, that he made the players pay for the washing of their own uniforms (a bigger insult due to the low salaries they had). To protest this, the players refused to pay and in response the owner refused to get the uniforms washed. This caused a standoff which led to extremely dirty uniforms. Their White Sox became black, and the nickname was born.

@Leotv19

@@theawesomeman9821 it was actually created by F Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 when he included mention to it in the Great Gatsby. His hope was to inspire W. P. Kinsella to write “Shoeless Joe” because he knew that it would someday be adapted into the movie “Field of Dreams”. That was his best bet to see Kevin Costner play a farmer who meets the Ghosts of his fictitious Black Sox. Sadly F Scott Fitzgerald died in 1940, some 49 years before his long con finally came to fruition

@@Leotv19 Few people know that, due to his untimely death, Francis Scott Fitzgerald couldn't introduce Sharon Rae Tedrick and William Costner to each other, as he had planned, but tasked his wife with taking care of it. Ultimately, the task fell to their daughter, Frances Scott Fitzgerald. So, in a twist, Sharon Rea and William were introduced by a F. Scott Fitzgerald, after all, and little Kevin was born, as planned. Long cons have twists and turns.

Thank you for reminding folks why the 1919 White Sox did what they did. Their nickname, Black Sox, came before the scandal since they came from a protest of Comiskey's policy to charge players for their laundry. Baseball was, and continues to be (especially in the minor leagues) a rough business and guys like Comiskey make it that way. As you said, it's a wonder it didn't happen before.

Carlin was always 'savagely-honest'. It was delightfully-painful, and he was just amazing in so many regards. For the rest of my days I will recall him as the man who taught me how to say something using almost ONLY the F-word and a bit of intonation. "F the F'ing F'ers," and stuff. Not lessons my mother would have encouraged me to seek out, but enlightening nonetheless! Also...Thomas the Train?! I had no idea. That's funny! ...which, I suppose, is 50% of why he would have taken the task on. He does have a good voice for oration, however!

@@EShirako Carlin is one of my comedic heroes along with one of my top free-speech icons along with Larry Flint. I wouldn’t say Carlin was the one who “taught” me how to get my points across with swearing and some voice inflections/intonations; but he was certainly one of the ones who helped me understand that the puritanical and über stuffy ways of speaking aren’t the ONLY ways to get your points across. Also, YES! When I learned of Carlin working on Thomas the Train I was flabbergasted, but also quite intrigued as to why he took on the job. I’d also agree that his voice is perfect for oration and narration.

Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, former Gambino family capo [correction: underboss] turned KZbin star, says there are two types of organized criminals: gangsters and racketeers. Rothstein was the racketeer's racketeer. Someday you should do a story about Gravano. He pled guilty to involvement in 19 murders and that's just the ones he admitted to. He most famously engineered the hit on Paul Castellano that made John Gotti boss of the Gambino family. Now, he's one of the best storytellers on KZbin and he remains basically unrepentant of his past life.

Now this is what I’ve been told by family members over the years and a weird saying my great uncle had, but I’m almost certain in some way my great uncle was on his payroll for bootlegging. He got busted once and within the hour of being arrested was released. He always said “it was the ol benefactor” and said nothing more than that. Plus he lived in Maryland at the time so close enough to New York to be in on it. Again, could be wrong but given he was the main player in bootlegging in the area and my great uncle got instead of a probable year in prison, under an hour of irritation I think there’s some truth to it.

I remember hearing this tidbit about the 1919 Black Sox: many of the ball players came from Southern farms and barely had any type of education. Most couldn't read or write. Some of the smarter players asked for the money to through the Series up front however the rest were told they'd be paid after the Series. The ones who waited never saw a dime. I'm not sure if Joe Jackson had really agreed to the scandal or if you was just guilty by association. He had decent stats with a .375 batting average, .455 slugging percentage, and a .388 on base percentage, scoring 5 runs, and knocking in 6 RBIs. He also a 100% fielding percentage, 16 put outs, and 1 assist. It was suggested, suggested mind you, that there were some balls that he might have had a chance to catch but didn't "run" hard enough to get them or that some of his throws may have been off target, kind of akin to points shaving in basketball. But all that, if true, could have been over compensating for the other players who were throwing the games, or sometimes you just have a bad throw, a sprain or tired legs, or a bad day.
