On this episode of Art Minute Gabriela takes a closer look at the relationship of the Yanomami, one of the largest indigenous communities in the communities in the Brazilian Amazon, with the photography of Claudia Andujar.
When Andujar met the Yanomami in 1970’s, these differences brought her closer to them, which resulted in a longstanding commitment to the protection of the Yanomami. Claudia Andujar sees photography as an artistic and political tool. Her work is characterized by the strong sense of responsibility, with which the artist is involved in the Pro-Yanomami Commission (CCPY) for the protected areas along the Brazilian-Venezuelan border.
You can find Andujar’s work in the exhibition CLAUDIA ANDUJAR | THE END OF THE WORLD, which is on view at the PHOXXI until 11. August 2024.
The wording that Andujar lived with the Yanomami for 7 years is misleading. Adujar's stay was not continuous for seven years
