I feel like the art community has changed the image of bullet journaling. The original concept was a minimalistic organisation tool. It was meant to be fast, simple and flexible. Artists put a lot of creativity into bullet journaling, but I think they've also made it off-putting for people who don't have the time to elaborately decorate a daily planner. My bullet journal is very simple, I don't decorate it at all. Writing out to-do lists helps me remember, and ticking off my tasks is surprisingly motivating. But I'm not busy enough to use a daily planner, so buying dated planners feels like a waste for me.

I'm an artist, and you're so right of us changing the image of bullet journalling. Bullet journaling in every way is an art! It’s unlimited, personal, and a fun creative way to feel organized as well as have somewhere you can put your thoughts and things together. Lettering alone is an amazing art form, and so is drawing! 99% of bullet journaling is both of those things, so for me personally, I can’t really comprehend how people don’t think it’s hard? For me, it feels like people are trying to police creativity and I feel that that takes away from art and it’s true purpose...fun!

Ehh, depends on the bullet journal. If you actually go to the site by the person who designed the system, bulletjournal.com, it was actually designed to be very rigid, organized, and straight to the point. If you spend hours decorating each weekly spread, yeah, you're definitely procrastinating while pretending to be productive and organized. But if you utilize bujo for it's true intention, which is an effective, slightly customized to fit your needs method of organizing the things you need to get done, it's the literal opposite of procrastinating. Bujo helped me get stuff done because I'm very forgetful and unorganized. I rarely have the subconscious thoughts of "this needs to get done and it takes this long", so I force myself to remember by putting it in my journal. For example, I add a small chores list to my weekly spreads with circles to fill in so I have a clear, in my face goal for what I need to get done that week in chores. Before then, my room would always be a mess and I'd find myself with little to no clean laundry. tl;dr because I went off on a tangent: it depends how you use it and wasn't designed for pretty procrastination.

@rmgalardo6 жыл бұрын
Yep. Literally the CREATOR of Bullet Journalling is a minimalist with his BuJo. This is NOT a good example of bullet journalling, neither are all of the planner-crazy folks. I love what they create and they can use BuJo, but originally it was created as a very minimalist style of journalling that is adaptable to include more. My best bullet journal was barely more than a to do list and it kept me updated and productive.
@shannons47306 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Galardo Yes, this is what I wanted to say! REALLY, bullet journaling is just an organization system. There's nothing wrong with making it pretty (I enjoy that), but it doesn't have to take any time at all. That being said, I'm kind of like Kasey where I find many aspects of the system unnecessary for me. However, I've taken some parts and love it.

To me bullet journaling is less “making my to-do list pretty” and more bribing myself into actually using my to-do list and planner. If I spent so long on it I HAVE to use it?? Right? Right. It’s super not about relaxing or taking care of myself. But if I don’t do my spreads myself I just forget my planner exists. Lol. I’ve never been able to keep myself organized before bujo-ing and I have planner phobia from all the failed pre printed planners I’ve had. Bullet journaling is not about the trackers, but a different planner system. And you can make it pretty if it inspires you but it’s super not necessary. You can literally bujo with one ball point pen.

I see a lot of "what is bullet journal?" comments so... *rolls up sleeves* A bullet journal is a mix of a planner and a running To Do list, where you make all the layouts yourself so as to best work for you. An index at the beginning is suggested to be able to use for reference, but you don't have to. A future log is a great place to list out future events you know are coming, as bujo are blank notebooks you build on daily rather than an already laid out planner. Some people draw in a calender at the beginning of the month, some just list 1-31 m-s down the side of the page, and this is a place to put events for the month you know are coming up. I personally list my bills and any school events like PTA meetings. Then you get into weekly/daily spreads. Some people will list their events for the week and then go off into daily to-do lists, and some just have a to-do for the whole week. How to lay things out is your choice. More complex/artsy bullet journals will include habit trackers with their monthly layouts, to help keep track of things like "hey when was the last time I watered the plants/ actually went to the gym/ had my period? Did I take my pills yesterday? Have I been good about drinking enough water/ getting enough sleep?" You don't HAVE to include trackers if they don't help YOU, but they're good tools for those who need them. Stamps, stickers, washi tape, doodles, etc are all for decoration and you don't HAVE to decorate your pages if you don't want to. Think of it like doodling in your class notes, or decorating a binder. Sometimes you just want something you're going to be looking at a lot to look cute.

I like bullet journaling but I’m not a fan of stamps for me. Right now I’m using premade planner-style inserts anyway, because I don’t have the time or energy to do the entire layout by hand. But I’m getting the urge to get a notebook and try doing it by hand again! Bujo is definitely art, and it makes people who can’t necessarily draw a creative outlet that makes them happy. And/Or it gives artists a prompt to do doodles/illustrations that they can look at while doing work, which inspires people to use the planner more.
@emmybailey15886 жыл бұрын
Imo bullet journaling is art because like, it's design, design is an artistic endeavor. I do monthly budgets, and I'm gonna be really up front in that I use a lot more of my artist skills in those spreads then I do in other art (composition, color theory, and line) It's not for everyone and it's not for everyone everyday, I only do it once a month so obvs I'm not too into it. You make a lot of good points and it makes sense, but there's a lot of art forms that are can be debatable as art (calligraphy, sculptures, paper crafts, wood carving, carpentry, architecture, video editing) I think you were def right in that things are too subjective and there's certainly gray areas in everything, though. So who know maybe one day we'll have an actual definition of "art" and it will be 800 miles long

The thought behind BuJo is efficiency. The guy who started the hype does his layouts with efficiency and because bujo is customized month by month it is for everyone different. The whole art journaling side of bujo wasn't the original intend and though the "inventor" according to his website is thrilled by all those artistic layouts, he never adopted it. He still goes about it as efficient minimalist as possible to have a planning, monitoring and managing tool that meets his requirements. Many Artists turned bujo spread designs into youTube videos, so it isn't much different than doing prompts. Many bujo enthusiasts experiment a lot before they find their ideal bujo and some are far to creative to ever stick to one design and bujo template. Monitoring food and water is not a prerequisite. :)

I bullet journal and I personal love it. It is a great way to keep my life organized and help make sure I stay on task. Plus you can make your spreads really pretty by buying stickers and putting them on your page. Bullet journaling is all about keeping your lip organized. You can make it as custom as you want to, it doesn’t have to be all about drinking water or exercising. You can make it about whatever you want to be about. Like work or school or your home life. Mood trackers and all that stuff are to help people with anxiety or people who like to have that kind of stuff down on paper. Bullet journaling it’s all about you. The heart and soul of the bullet journal method is to keep track of what you need, done in an analog style. It works to suit your needs whether its decorative or minimalist. I prefer it over yearly planners because I dont go through a whole notebook in a year and can include lists of things to keep track of like how much money I spend in a month (keeps me mindful of my spending), grocery lists, university info, etc. I completely understand if the idea of creating your own spreads is too time consuming for you, you can like and dislike things all you like, I just wanted to give my piece. Also I just found you and I'm really into your art style. It's also a strange feeling because I'm from Victoria and I'm very unused to people on the internet with followings being here.

The beauty of bullet journalling is it can be as simple or extravagant you want it to be! And since it’s a blank journal you can add whatever you want, and it’s supposed to be exactly what you need (since you decide what goes in it). If something doesn’t work for you one month, you can just do something else next month. There’s definitely this whole instagram / pinterest etc community of bujo-ing where everything is super beautiful, you need to track everything in your life, and do amazing lettering. I think it can be very intimidating to beginners / people who are thinking of starting their own bujo. If you’re doing research about bujo online, it can be very overwhelming. Like, who has time to do all that? If you go to the original creator of the bullet journals website (bulletjournal.com), the idea of the journal is VERY simple. Everything you need is a journal and a pen. That’s it. It’s meant to be kind of a planner, not an art project.(but of course it can be if you want). Personally I use my bujo as a planner / art journal / scrapbook / notebook. To me it seems kind of weird to put it in an art subscription box? Bullet journaling is mostly about planning? It can definitely be artsy but it’s not the main focus of it

Yeah, I'm the same way! My spreads simplified more and more over time. But I still do have monthly spreads. I find the monthly log hella useful to flip back to at the beginning of each week and I have monthly trackers for my insomnia (hours slept, quality of sleep, things I took to help me fall asleep that night), my recent onset development of chronic headaches, and I'm trying to draw more, so I keep track of that in my bujo too. The art tracker is especially great for commissions bc I mark what type of drawing I did, so I'll see if I haven't worked on commissions in a couple days.

I think the same as you about bullet journaling. My reason is, that my free time among the week is so limited, there are days, where I have only 30 minutes of spare time in the evening, before I go to bed. Taking my limited spare time to organize my day seems like a huge waste of time. I have an electronic calendar which reminds me of my tasks, appointments, etc. Getting new infos into that takes a few seconds. There is no need for me to elongate this process and make it more time consuming. Sure, if there are people who have too much free time on hand and don't know what to do with that time, that might be a thing for them.

I bullet journal, but I use it mostly the way you use your planner. I don't do a lot of the mood/water/exercise/breathing tracking, but I do have customized extra pages I wouldn't have in a normal planner. Some of mine are "books to read," "movies to watch," "character dump" for characters I make up randomly since I write fiction, "random story threads" for things I might write some day, etc. I've also never stuck to any other planner, I think just the amount of customization and putting the extra effort helps me keep to it.

I absolutely consider bullet journaling art!! I put a lot of effort in, it helps me relax and the way I make progress is identical to my drawings. I start out with a sketch, then do the "lineart" and add colour (I make mine very detailed, but you actually only *need* a pen and a notebook if you want to make very simple spreads); I also don't use any templates/stickers/stamps but instead focus on calligraphy! I just like having one notebook where I can put little drawings, calligraphy, memories... that also helps me with school/being productive and that I can look back on and feel proud :)

I bullet journal because big planners aren't suited for me. I don't have a lot on my schedule, so I feel like I'm wasting all those weekly pages. On bujo, I write down important dates and leave the rest on a little calendar. Since I have time on my hands, I like to fill it to destress and organize my mind when I don't feel like drawing. There's no pressure to dedicate lots of pages to one month. I can make the book myself, pocket-sized even. Don't have to buy one. You can dedicate pages to lists such as drawing ideas/requests or inktober prompts, contacts, any chart or tracker that you fancy, maybe little recipes. It's a tiny planner with character!

I need to spend hours decorating a bullet journal because it makes me excited to open it up and keep track of my stuff. If I have a pre made boring planner it won’t be fun and it’ll probably just end up on my shelf. I’m very unorganized and I get bored very easily so turning organization into fun art helps keep me engaged. I also love art but I hate practicing art but I really want to improve so I since I’m already very engaged in my bullet journal I use that as an excuse to practice the art skills that I need to practice. The best part about bullet journaling is that you can make it into whatever you want. So for me it’s a planner but also my sketch book.

To each their own. I bullet journal because I am a law student (I have to be organised) and hobby artist (as a creative, I'm not naturally good at being organised lol) and I have anxiety (so, being disorganised can cause be to spiral and the kinda meditative nature of BJ is... idk therapeutic?). BJ is not my main form of art or anything. I love character design and illustration! I just also like BJ. It's not a waste of my time because I don't have any time to waste during semester. But I make time because it is helpful to me, y'know? Some people make time for sports or TV, I just make time to be organised. If I didn't make planning fun by making it artsy and cute, I'd pack the craps with it. Haha! Not only does it give me time to myself to just relax and focus, but it is also the only way that I feel like I can effectively balance uni and art. Making my uni notes pretty by colour-coding everything and including drawings helps me to remember things more effectively too, for some reason. It's just how my brain works. :P

It's also keeps me accountable for my healthy habits, I've been drinking more water and working out more since I started. Also also, i use it for budgeting, gift idea lists, an address book, cosplay/project planner, and to keep all my important dates, like trips and birthdays. Its definitely not for everyone but I personally find it useful

I tried to bullet journal, but couldn't keep up with it for more than a couple of months at a time. it was fun when I had energy for it, but it turned into a chore when I didn't. "I have more important things to do then decorate my to-do list" this had me rolling, this is super spot on. The funny thing is the guy that started built a no nonsense system to get things done without all that stuff, yet somehow it's been taking over by people wielding glitter pens and washi tape. Which I think people do it because it feels creative without having to draw or make art. But if you draw or do creative stuff for a living this is just taking time away from your core work. Purely out of interest you should see the original/official bullet journal website and videos. Its all about minimal design and lack or excessive time to design pretty calendar. It was/is a no frills approach to notes. Its almost bizarre that it has become synonymous with the very thing he didn't like with other approaches.

Way way late with my feelings on bullet journaling but I think it's awesome...for some. The whole point is how extremely customizable it is. It can be a super basic planner, or it could be an art journal/planner. It's an all in one book for a lot of people. You can track habits and keep a to-do list, sure. But you can also totally skip those, and use it as a reading list, a video idea dump, you can keep your shopping list or homework reminders. I love love love the idea of keeping one, but with my ADHD I've never been able to remember to use it for even 2 days in a row lol

Hi kasey I use to bullet journal and do all those fancy layouts every week but than I found I had no time to do art which was sad 😪 so I stopped for a long time but recently I started thinking that bullet journals are just making a list using dot points so now I do it in my sketch book and it takes me 5 seconds to do a whole week and than I draw around it, so I guess what I am trying to say is that it doesn't have to be so time consuming and was really meant as a casual way to plan your life. But internet people have made it into the fancy thing that it is today so I blame them because bullet journaling should be quick and easy. Thank you for reading all the way of you did I appreciate it and u are the best Kasey.

I started bullet journaling about six months ago. I ran across some bujo content and enjoyed it and I was already looking for some ways to track my writing and editing and my social media in a more meaningful way. It also, along with other things, got me hooked on doodling, which then took me to more drawing, and somehow I ended up subscribed to dozens of art channels :D I did use it for mood tracking too, but I mostly use it for work planning. Having a visual representation of what I did helped, plus I tracked things like editing and publishing which take a ton of time but I kind of ignored and then felt I didn't do enough. It is a bit time consuming. It takes a few hours to set up every month. After that, it takes about 20 minutes per day, but that's because I joined a doodle challenge so I take 15 minutes for each doodle :P I don't see bujo as an art form. There could be art in the bujo, but it has a different purpose.

I haven't started bullet journaling but I'm interested in it. I thought the box was alright, it was something new which I appreciated, and for the people who don't journal, it's still pens/markers that can be used otherwise. The main reason I'm interested in bullet journals over normal journals is that I don't journal often and I hate a whole bunch of empty pages or spaces. With bullet journalling I can make days smaller or not at all if I don't need to write that day in. I'm thinking of doing a monthly drawing, month view calendar and a to-do list per month and then I'll have a few pages near the back of things I want to accomplish through the year. Keep track of shows I'm watching and games I'm playing (I have a bad tendency of picking up a different game and never finishing the ones I had already started.) Maybe monthly checklists like drawing every day and getting to bed on time... I'm such a night owl. :P I think it'll end up taking 2 pages double sided per month which means I'll have the book for a long time and it won't take a whole lot of time each month from other more important things because I feel the same way about investing a lot of time into just journaling vs doing the things you are journaling about.

I started bullet journaling as a sort of therapy? I don't decorate my pages and I just draw calendars and stuff like that. It still makes me feel better after a month of crazy. I used to track water and mood, but I stopped that too. Like you, I didn't see the need for it and bujo became a bit of a chore. So I just like using a bullet journal to get my own format of calendar. Most pre-made planners and stuff never seem fit my needs.

I bullet journal! I definitely feel it’s a form of art. However, my bullet journals are very simple. I write to-do lists, shopping lists, a mini calendar, quotes, and occasionally a journal entry with polaroids. Oh and I do a doodle of the day!

I think that it's a kind of art, I saw a lot of beautiful and well designed BuJos on Instagram and damn, I wish I have the patience, organization and time for do BuJo! Also, I saw people who use the Bullet Journals for organice materials they had, make a washitape catalog or even organice their OCs, I couldn't resist to buy a kit and a BuJo notebook for do that. PS: I want thoses stamps, they're super cute, omg!

Bullet journaling, while i dont have a journal yet but practice on notepads, is kind of like drawing to me. I have always liked drawing on paper and trying different fonts (not caligraphy per se) and i just come up with things to put in it. Like i dont have 'goals', i just like having all these little bits and points to add on. Its so fun!

I do use a bullet journel. But it's not suuper creative. What I really like about it is the freedom that it gives you. Sometimes I have to-do lists with 20 really short tasks that I have to do and mustn't forget. Other days, I only use one bullet point - or even don't write anything at all. This way, I normally can use my journal for more than a year. I also take notes in it when I'm at a meeting and have everything in one place. I keep it really simple and only use a few pens and sometimes (when I want it to be pretty) some washi tape. But I really only spend 10 minutes to prepare a new month once and afterwords only write down the date and that's it - nothing fancy. I've never been as productive and organised before. But in these two years of using my bujo, I've been getting so productive! I love it! My bujo isn't art - it's a tool to motivate me and to contain the chaos that is my job :)

I do keep a bullet journal for study planning - dividing my lesson plans and syllabus and revisions and tests so everything gets covered on time. Along with it, I do keep track of all the tv shows, movies, etc i would like to watch (coz there are very specified days when I can watch them in a limited time) and what non-syllabus books I would like to read and work that into my schedule. But I have NEVER ever decorated it. I do decorate the cover, but that is it. The reason I like bullet journals is because my way of planning things is very different than a standard planner. First there is a yearly goal, which is broken down into monthly goals which is the broken down weekly or lesson plan wise and then daily. Moreover, it is not a checklist, I have to divide hours I need to give to different books and various tests and question banks and all. The quickest, easiest and most organized way is to make it into a weird table for every day which no planner would provide. Also, I am very picky about the size and number of pages and I am hella cheap. So I just print out a template on printer paper and make my own journal to my preferred specifications. And then I make the cover out the white side of calender papers and decorate it. That happens once or twice a year. And I reuse most of my covers 4-5 times so....I don't think I need any more covers for the next 3-4 years. No other decorating, rest is all planning. Then I just predivide and prepare everything. I leave some time and some space for personal things, recreation and I keep adding what I would want to do and check off what is done. The biggest advantage is that it prevents me from forgetting everything I need to do. It allows me to reduce chaos and confusion and really keeps me on my timeline. I hate carrying over stuff to the next day and it is so satisfying to see that I have completed all lessons/tests/topics I needed to. My study output has increased almost 3 times. But yeah, outside of that, I don't have much use for it. I just use the to-do apps for the most part. I think when my studies are over, I would just not have much use for it. But right now, it is the things that keeps me on track.

I actually do it, but I keep my layouts pretty simple and more with a productive focus. Just like the original by Ryder Caroll. If I have an artsy day, I may doodle in it or glue some memorabilia in it.

I’m also self-employed and I use bullet journaling but I use it in an incredibly utilitarian way. I definitely don’t make it pretty. Just an extremely custom planner or a never ending to-do list, that’s way cheaper than buying a planner. I track month plans for work, fitness and other dates, weekly to-dos and daily to do. It’s nice because if I have a meeting or event where I need to take notes I don’t need 2 books (planner and notebook), or if I skip a day I don’t waste the paper that day would be printed on in a planner.

I feel like bullet journaling can definitely take the form of art. You can make it strictly productive, or make it crazy decorative. I definitely don't agree with people saying it's a fancy to do list, I bullet journal because I feel like a planner is way too constricting, I love to memory keep, and generally keep track of everything, I get anxious as all heck if I don't write things down, may as well make it look nice while I'm at it :)

I used to be really into bullet journaling, especially after getting out of the hospital earlier this year. But once I got a job and have been busy almost every day, it feels more like a chore than something enjoyable. I want to get back into it though. It really helped me keep on top of my t1 diabetes and I've kinda... slipped off the health wagon.

Oh my goodness I love your Inktober logo just saying it turned out great. :D Nice. I think that art is defined by the artist. So I think that as long as the creation process is going on it can be considered art. Therefore yes I think bullet journaling can be considered art. Also it takes SO MUCH commitment to make bullet journals, I was doing some research on them and some of the ones out there....man... they are intricate and it colored me impressed and also made me realize that I do not have the drive or time to make them myself.

You actually don't have to decorate or get fancy with your bullet journal. I don't like getting super elaborate with my set-up , but I love watching other people do it that way! My style i just minimalistic :D I personally do not really consider it art, it's just a personal way of planning. I don't buy planners because I don't use it every day and i don't want to waste paper! + I like adding lists and other stuff to it that I need to keep on top of.

It's funny, because all the problems you have with bullet journaling I agree with. I don't track mood or anything like that, I just do each week and set out what I'm going to do. Then some colour and doodles. I have dysgraphia, so I'm never going to be able to have nice calligraphy or lettering, so I don't get into that. But I don't have any free time, so not only does it help me visualise what I have on and calm me down, but it means I actually do get to do some drawing! As for the equipment, eh. I do use my fabier caster markers and fineliners, and that's it. So I'm happy with my scrawlrbox having started in august, not July.

I feel like bullet journalling would be so fun to do if time wasn't a factor in it. I can totally see how it can motivate some to pick it up, though, because sometimes you just need that little extra *oomfph* to get to do something positive for yourself. I personally feel like decorating a journal would motivate me to track and make daily goals more often, but at the same time I see myself spending more and more time on it and getting unmotivated because I'd probably feel pressure to make it all look both organized and cute looking-- currently write down stuff I need to remember in my sketchbook and set reminders on my phone 😂 But yeah, bujo looks like a really nice hobby-that-also-helps, but I personally think its oki to just do what works for you and if it puts pressure on you to plan you can steer away from bujo and still appreciate it! Also hecc I cant get over Hatch, he really became the stitch that brought everything together c: 💙

I bullet journal, but I don't track any of the miscellaneous things you mentioned--just work, school, and personal events. I also don't really spend a lot of time decorating. If I have a free couple of hours I might do something more decorative, but I work full time and am in grad school, so free time is rare. I just like it as a planning system because it's flexible. The rigid structure of a traditional planner has never worked for me, but bullet journaling does. As far as art, it's definitely not an art for me. Some people make lovely art in their bullet journals, but I feel like it's a strange scrawlrbox theme since most people probably won't find it relevant.

I like watching people set up their BuJos or have it on in the background because 9 out of 10 it's someone with a relaxing ambiance to their channel. For myself, personally, I don't want to take two hours to make my spreads as I find it drains my creativity that I could be pouring into a drawing or painting. Instead I will do "daily" visual journaling if I have time to account for fun things that happen that day, sketches, etc. If it's a way for people to relax and create a flow space that's great for their mentality, who am I to judge if it's art or not.

Little late but I just got into bullet journaling and I do it quiet often actually, I see your point with the fact that it’s not really versatile enough for a scrawlr box, usually I don’t use stamps or stickers, I wouldn’t particularly like this box because I usually use completely blank but the stamps are very cute! Bullet journals are meant to be personal, and the fact that you actually liked it after you added hatch was really funny, I add my little characters and doodles all over the pages and it does indeed let me make time for myself, not to mention keeps me organized, and I wouldn’t consider it an art form, I don’t think? Maybe it is? Considering I also draw I don’t consider bullet journaling an art form, it’s creative but I don’t think it’s a form of art :/ good luck to all my bullet journalists out there!
