Great explanation of using Rigify. One useful tip, when you’re using finger bones, is to turn on Snap to Volume. Makes it much easier to get them aligned correctly.

Rigify is amazing for posing hands and feet. You can do it without a metarig but it's so much easier either one.
@ArtisansofVaul9 ай бұрын
Totally agree. I can't say I've used it for feet much but it's great for hands. I just like that you can delete bits you don't want and it will generally still work.

Should make a video on How to use geometry nodes to attach an unrigged duplicate with a rigged duplicate character. This helps for those who need object normals to read the light. You’ll notice that when you put an object normal map onto a non-rigged object, it reads the light only when you rotate the light but when you rotate the character the light interaction is frozen in time. But when you do this to an unrigged object, light interaction is unaffected. This is because all deformations (including some modifiers and even having a rig on it) will cease the object normals from being read. But I learned in Maya that if you link the vertex together (exactly from vertex order to vertex order, even down to the finger and tongue and teeth) you can get the nondeformed unrigged character to attach to the deforming rigged character (as it poses the arm or even tongue rig) light reads properly), and can read the object normal map and other things of similar issue. I tried using chatgpt but it eventually didn’t understand/cisualize how to approach what I was trying to achieve, even though it said it did lol. I’m assuming the blender version matters? (I’m using blender 3.6 -or however far Goo Engine can go which I think right now it’s 4.0-but my addons don’t all update to 4.0 just yet sadly)
@ArtisansofVaul9 ай бұрын
Sounds like you're way more knowledgeable on this and I am 😅 I don't really get involved in lighting beyond a thing VERY basic as I model for 3D printing. So it wouldn't really be appropriate to make a video on this as I don't do it enough to know all the little details I like to be aware of on a topic. If you know a good video on the topic I'd love to watch it though 👍🏻
@Bahamamos9 ай бұрын
@@ArtisansofVaul sadly I only know how to do it in maya. Snapping by vertex of one object to another is pretty easy. But blender’s snapping feature doesn’t permanently latch the duplicate onto the rigged. Just snaps a momentarily. My skill with geometry nodes is heavily off key lol.

I have something strange happen, where the mesh scales up, and rotates - even after both applying scale/rotation on both rig and mesh itself.
@ArtisansofVaul2 ай бұрын
@@rasmuskochhansen That's bizzare. I can't say I've experienced that when I've used it. Sorry...
@rasmuskochhansen2 ай бұрын
@@ArtisansofVaul Np, thanks for the reply. I found something odd hidden in the mesh, and that fixed the scaling issue. Now the mesh is just not affected by the rig, although I can see the vertexgroups for them. DEF-bone vertex group name, but nothing happens. Will keep looking around :)

@rasmuskochhansen Glad you solved the first issue. I found sometimes if the mesh has issues it won't work very well/at all for rigging automatically

Why do you not recommend posing STLs with Rigify ? Wouldn't the process be similar to what you showed with the base mesh ? Thank you for another great tutorial!
@ArtisansofVaul8 ай бұрын
It's not something I would say Im against in any way, but most of the time if you are reposing an STL setting up the rig takes much longer (because the model isn't in an A or T pose) so most of the time its just easier to use the pose brush as shown in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX7bf5ykntuCrNU
@pawelszyld5248 ай бұрын
Awesome Video!! Is there a way to convert STL (which as I understand all are constructed from triangles) from triangles to quads? I have seen the other video about posing models but would like to try rigging to compare the effects.
@ArtisansofVaul8 ай бұрын
@pawelszyld524 so there is a function that can try it but STLs are often too messy. You can pay for an addon like quad remesher which will do it but it's quite pricey. The other option is to do it yourself manually. I'm hoping to make a video on that soon.

This is a bad tutorial. When teaching you must assume that the your students have no prior knowledge. Using custom hot keys or settings when demonstrating is confusing. it isnt enough to show the steps you also need to provide an explanation of why you do things in a certain order and why you do something.
@ArtisansofVaul3 ай бұрын
@ohsoblack 🤦 You have to assume prior knowledge, if I didn't I'd be talking through navigation and basic clicks and the video would take hours. Tutorials/learning works on building knowledge, not just starting from 0 every time.
