one of my favorite features of the Arturia Minilab MkII is the ability to control modulation with a touch pad! I love that the build quality is excellent as well as having drum pads, a larger keyboard and programmable nobs! Not to mention the bundle of softwares that come packaged with the keyboard!

I’m pretty new to all of this music production, and man, is it a lot to learn. The Arturia seems great for getting started with synths, and those vintage sounds are great. I’m curious how well it would work to control studio one features. Thanks for all you do, Sanjay. Your intelligence and kindness shine through every video.

This seems like such a well rounded midi device, I don't have one currently but I have been trying to get one for months now. The idea of making music to me is just so amazing. One feature that seemed so cool to me was how the most used knobs at the bottom was so useful and convenient. I love how aesthetic it looks and I would do anything to get my hands on it!

Do any of you guys have an issue with jumpy or jittery encoders? I cannot get a slow smooth knob sweep without the parameter jumping up and down as I turn it.

The best feature is the tight integration with analog lab, having direct control of the software means that you dont have to keep using your mouse when youbare adjusting things, technology that gets out of your way like this by making the creative process less complicated is the best kind of technology!

A word of warning from an owner: The knobs are jittery/jumpy when turning them slowly. They also don't seem to behave like most endless encoders outside of Analog Lab, in that they don't seem to dynamically match with what parameters they're set to. For example, knob 1 is filter frequency on instrument 1, and filter frequency on instrument 2, depending on which is selected. If I turn instrument 1's filter frequency to 12 o'clock, then switch tracks, let's say instrument 2's filter frequency is at 0 (or 7 o'clock), the moment I move knob 1, instrument 2's filter frequency 'jumps' to 12 o'clock instead of moving relative to its original position. At that point I'd rather just have potentiometers (most knobs on synths and whatnot with end-points) so I can at least see where the knobs are set. That said, it's still a great controller if these issues don't bother you too much. I tend to be perfectionistic with my songs so I tend to go back and smooth out (re-draw entirely usually) my automation lanes anyway. It's very helpful if you use Arturia's Analog Lab/V Collection already, and if not, you'll get a discount for upgrading from the included Analog Lab Lite. Good luck! P. S. I reeeally hope the Keylab keyboards don't have the same encoder issues...

As a warning to anyone considering picking one up: There seems to be an issue where the knobs' MIDI data tends to be jittery, especially when turning the knobs slowly. Mine does this and I've seen a decent number of people saying the same, with one person returning it twice; all 3 of theirs had this issue. I really hope the Keylab doesn't have this issue...

One little Easter egg on the MiniLab is the Keyboard MIDI Channel numbers above the keys correspond to the frets on the E string of a guitar. Channel 0 is E (open E string), channel 3 is G (3rd fret on the bottom string), channel 5 is A, etc. I thought it was such a great idea for guitarists to easily translate their knowledge of the fretboard to a keyboard quickly.

Minor head's-up, the versions of this being sold on Amazon (and likely most other sources with new/old stock) include a "coupon" for a $29 upgrade path to the full Analog Lab version, but only after you register the hardware and Lite version do they make you aware the upgrade is now $69. If the cheap path to the better synth version is a major purchase criteria for buying one of these over other compact controllers, just be aware it's now $40 more expensive than most KZbin reviews of the product indicate prior to May, 2019 when Arturia moved to Analog Lab version 4 and the more expensive upgrade price.

All in all, the keyboard is great though. And the keys are exceptional in this price range, never played better mini keys.

I like the touchpads. You can do maneuvers that are impossible with the physical wheel, such as touching the top, letting go, touching the bottom, letting go (of the pitch strip) to have ridiculously fast pitch jumps. Same with mod strip, aside from the fact that it doesn't reset when you let go of it.

Ok, now I feel cheated. My endless encoders don't react the way they do for you; they react as if they are those "end-point" encoders and always "jump" when I turn them from a position different from the software instrument's knobs. Help? Update - Forgot to mention that the endless functionality works fine in Arturia's software, it just doesn't work outside of it. Also, my encoders also tend to be a bit jumpy/jittery when I turn them slowly. I really hope the Keylab's encoders don't have the same problem because I'm thinking of upgrading to that.

The NI Komplete Kontrol M32 is a good alternative. It gives you 8 endless knobs that work with all NKS instruments (including all Arturia ones), and you can navigate to other pages of controls, so in most cases you can access all the parameters. You don't get drum pads, but pads on cheap controllers tend to be pretty useless anyway. The downsides: it's a lot wider and won't fit in most backpacks, and (as of today - Nov 29, 2019) they still haven't added the ability to make custom MIDI templates, so if you want to change which MIDI CCs the knobs send, you can't. NI said they're working on that, but I imagine it could be a few more months.

I have one of these. I bought it to control my new Novation Peak. Sadly, the MKII doesn't have 5-pin midi, it has USB, as does the Peak. But, you can't plug them directly into each other, so it makes it kind of redundant for me, as I could already use any of my other synths to midi control my Peak. Bleh, I was hoping I'd have a way to plug into the Peak, and maybe sit on the couch and make some patches when the mood hit me. Unfortunately, it seems I'm still tethered to my studio tables. Oh well, aside from my personal issue with the device, it is REALLY well made.

Any MIDI controller will indeed control any other MIDI controllable device. The problem lies in MIDI mapping; which knob/button/key/etc. opens which MIDI number 0-127 (128 integers). Think of any MIDI device as a whole bunch of 128's, some in series and some in parallel. It's a virtual maze unless you have some dedicated starting points or you're willing to do a considerable amount of calculation. That's why NI works with Kontakt and Arturia works with Ableton, they're pre-mapped.

That's a good option if that's what you prefer. I used to do the same thing myself because I prefer better keys as my main keyboard

This is probably a dumb thing to like as a favorite feature, but I lo I've how small and portable it is. I live in a place where I cannot have visitors, so having a portable studio is great for working with other artists!!

That's not dumb at all. That could be a main argument for someone (like you) to buy or not buy a small(ish) midi keyboard.

Hey Sanjay, I came across your KZbin channel a couple of days ago when looking for a midi keyboard controller that would suit me the best and I totally hooked man. I love your very informative and detailed videos and reviews. I decided that I'll go with the Arturia MiniLab Mk II as my very first keyboard controller. I believe that that's the one that ticks most of the boxes of my needs and still within my budget. Also, completely off topic, I noticed your mini led display showing real time data, is there any chance you could share a link for one of those too? Keep up the great work, brother, and thank you so much for sharing your insites with the community. Really appreciated, man. Cheers.

The best thing about it imo is that it's pretty cheap while having the looks, the portability and the controls look really smooth. Sure is a great investment if you travel and perform!

The Arturia Minilab MkII is a super solid build and functions beautifully. The included Analog Lab 4 Lite software provides a good selection of classic synths and instruments. I too miss the MIDI DIN connector but I have the black and white Arturia Keystep to control my synths. Great reviews!

@@SanjayC I did see the black one after I ordered and would have preferred it. I went crazy last week and got the Akai MPK Mini, Nektar LX25+, Alesis V25, Korg NanoKEY2 and NanoKontrol2, along with an old Akai LPK25. I have the black/white Keysteps plugged into my new Behringer Deepmind D12, 2xNeutron and a Model D. My Jupiter 80 is in my utility closet as I have run out of space (and time?). Oh yeah a new Korg MS-20-mini too and 4xReface DX-YC-CP-CS. My wife hated the sound of my PAiA 2720 kit (with the real keyboard!) from the early 70s and now I have 10 synths and no wife. Luxury!

Great video. Thanks! I'm in my late 40's and I was a DJ for many years. Unfortunately, my age doesn't make good for that trade anymore and my musical taste hasn't changed with the music. I've now decided that music production might fill the void in my life. I've purchased several items including an Arturia Mk2. Your review and that of others have made me feel like I've made a pretty good decision. I do have one question though. Can I plug in/attach an Akai LPD8 beat pad to the Arturia Mk2 and use them synchronously with the provided software? Secondly, I've got a free trial of Reason 10. Does the Arturia Mk2 work in Reason software? Thanks in advance for any replies. Subscribed.

Awesome to hear that you're getting into music production! I'm in my 40s too - so you're in good company! The MK2 should work just fine with Reason - it'll work with any software that works with a midi keyboard. As for the LPD8, what I suggest is plugging them both in separately to your computer and then using them together. You don't need to "daisy chain" them.

Wow, this was so helpful! Thank you for making videos. I have written music for over 20 years, but just on a straight piano. I did use finale to create sheet music in college, but that was over 10 years ago, and it really seems music technology has evolved FAR without me...haha. I don't know anything about music technology in today's times. So, I'm trying to start bringing my songs to life (from piano to the song sound I actually had in mind). Do you have any advice for someone who is not computer/tech savvy at all? Where does one begin? What do I need to learn? I understand if you don't have time for all of these questions. I will check out your other videos!
