Seth's piece about the current crisis is I agree watchable, but he is still mainly focused on mocking Trump and the Republicans. Since what happened is a direct consequence of Biedns actions I would like to hear late night hosts openly criticising his moves, same way they critisied Trump for abandoning the Kurds. Trump was never one to accualy take any kind of criticism, but Biden is praised as the savior from the dark era of "the Trump" and still his actions don't reflect the myth bulid around him. It is time to acknowledge the reality, that this administration is eqauly messy. Republican party started this, but the Democrats have brought it to an equaly messy conclusion. So instead of mocking Trump and comparing Trump voters to the Taliban (as some do), it would be better to do some real journalism and explain to the people how it started and ended and why has the country fallen so fast.
@ChrisCypher
@ChrisCypher 3 жыл бұрын
@@dakotaannecaulfield9779 Yes, that's true. Which is why I said he's not "balanced" because he definitely has his bias, which is fine. But the situation is also a bit different to the Kurds because many of the factors in the departure were initiated during Trump' s term and Biden chose to see it through. Seth acknowledged the messy nature but perhaps didn't lean into it like he more likely would've for Trump. But I don't think Seth would ever call Biden a "savior" in any sense. I always got the impression he was a Bernie supporter, and no Bernie supporter would call Biden a savior. Also, he's not at all a journalist, he's a comedian. So I don't think it's necessarily his job to explain the whole context with nuance (when that sort of the thing happens, it's great, but it's not really his role). I'm not sure this was as well done of a withdraw as we could have had, most likely not. But, no matter what, this situation was going to happen when we did withdraw. Doesn't matter if it was now, a year from now, or another 2 decades from now. This same situation would have happened. And we needed to get out, so better sooner then later. Most American's wanted us out. Most Afgan's wanted us out. Most of the rest of the world thought we should leave. And it was costing crazy amounts of money all while not doing anything of value. Leaving was objectively the right call, and now the right time(I mean eariler would of been better, but now is better then later), but Yes, we need to do all we can to help with out a military presence now. When Afghanistan had a reputation for being clean safe and exotic. When Afghanistan was run by a socialist government and allied with the Soviet Union. People seem to conveniently forget that time period. It was radical Islamic extremists that hated Socialism that started doing terrorist attacks and killings. These people were uneducated rural fanatics, but a small minority. The Afghan government asked the Soviet Union to come help, to assist in stopping these extremists before they destroyed the country. The United States then funded, armed and aided these terrorists with millions of dollars in aid and weapons. Afghanistan was well on its way to being a modern civilized nation, and the United States spent millions dragging back to where it is now. All of that blood is on our hands. @@infinitegalaxy89 agreed money from honest taxpayers ended up in rich men's pockets. But aside from the financial aspect I feel very bad that after decades of war Afghanistan is left to th dogs. And the international community is accepting this as status quo already. Only some muted criticism from some countries. I saw Prez Biden's address where he says that Taliban would have taken over no matter when US troops left. My question is if you knew this WHAT DA *** DID YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Our armed forces are paid, they have basically rented themselves out to do the dirty work of the powers that be, where as the Taliban fight for their land and religious beliefs. We could never win, and it only took most 20 years to acknowledge the fact.

I agree that the system to get them here is absurd… but if we “fast track” everyone who wants to come here and grant them asylum, how long will that take? I have to imagine the background checks on those who weren’t assisting us has to be extremely deep. We cant just let in someone who wants to commit harm to the US. This is a much harder thing to pull off than Seth and others make it seem. These people need safe haven that’s for sure, but we need to protect the homeland while we do this. It’s very complicated.

Thank you, Seth and team, for this segment. I remember the heinous attacks against Representative Barbara Lee. She was the only person to vote against invading Afghanistan at the time. She knew what would happen. Wars only ever benefit the few at the top. The ordinary people are always left traumatised and in massive suffering; if they do get any benefits, they are crumbs at best. If we want a safe and peaceful world. then provide for everyone's needs and raise them to be peaceful people. It's not hard to figure out.

Thank you to Rep. Barbara Lee! One of the very few politicians against the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. An idol of mine. I believe some of the attacks against her were so awful because she was both Black, and a woman. Easily outnumbered and talked down to. But she is a hero with a conscience, and should be remembered as such.

Thank you for suggesting that the US take all Afghan refugees - absolutely the right and compassionate thing. I just watched the Colbert Late Show monologue and was utterly disappointed/disgusted by the selective spin. "There's nothing we can do now" and "US soldiers are glorious heroes", "Sorry women and dissidents of Afghanistan, we really care but we care about us more" was the overarching message. There is still more the US can do to help those whose lives have been ruined, outside of military presence.
