Great video! I didn't know they collect from so many countries. I do have one question. In registering works with BMI, a sound recording is not required. How is BMI able to track down royalties of a song without a sound recording?
@tyniacoats5 жыл бұрын
@@atuvelman Yes! They actually collect from more countries than 83/93, because some foreign PROs represent multiple countries! That's a great question! BMI tracks songs by title & artist, so it is very very very important how you register your songs with them! If your song is on the radio or a streaming platform, they report the songs used to BMI/ASCAP. & since they actually have the sound recording, BMI/ASCAP use 3rd party companies to match the fingerprint for plays/streams.

@@granzglobewalker I received about $24 or maybe $45 from BMI. I never signed up with ASCAP, but BMI has a better way of finding out which songs were played. That's how I know that if I had been with ASCAP, I never would have received a penny of that money.

That is just not true...ASCAP is governed by SONGWRITERS and Publishers. Furthermore, it is a board that members VOTE on so members are actually in charge of who runs ASCAP unlike BMI. She in fact did say ASCAP is run my Songwriters and Publishers but she was very misleading in their association with labels. EVERYONE in the Music industry has, or at least tries to have an association with labels...that's who you do business with.

Back in 2013 I did my due diligence research on both, ended up choosing BMI, joined them in 2014, and been with them since. Back then their contract stated that once you joined them, you'll exclusively be stuck with them for your first two years. And after two years you're free to leave them whenever you want. Don't know if that still applies to this day.

I'll be signing up with BMI again. I am writing again, but I also want to start my own label and music publishing company. I want total control. So I will sign up as a writer, and then sign up my publishing company as well. I kind of like the idea of getting those royalties staggered, as I would with ASCAP, but that's not a big deal. This is from ASCAP's site: "When ASCAP distributes royalties for a performance of your music, 50% goes to the writer(s), and 50% to the publisher(s). If you want to access your publisher’s share, you will need to set up a publishing company with ASCAP." So, if you don't have an external publisher, it's meaningless to say you can join as just a writer, is it not? Are you saying that BMI will allow you to get your publisher's share through your writer account?

@tyniacoats5 жыл бұрын
I started out as a Research Assistant in the royalty distribution department, so that's how I learned the ins and outs of royalties. I worked with a lot of writers/music libraries who have placements on TV to get them any royalties missing from TV plays. I also worked with publishing admin companies & many hip-hop producers for the biggest names in rap today, setting everything up to make sure they were getting their proper song splits and going back and forth with their attorneys or managers or pub admin. Then the International Relations team picked me up and I was the coordinator handling our relationship with BMI's foreign sister societies, helping the foreign CMOs with their royalty distribution from BMI & helping them find ways of getting their government to establish certain laws/regulations for them to get better pay. Also dealt heavily with managing/amending BMI's agreements with foreign CMOs & many many more things lol, but this is already too long of a comment haha

Based on what you said, BMI appeals more to me, but one thing is confusing: What’s the benefit to being signed with a publishing company or having your own publishing company vs just signing up with BMI as a songwriter? If I am about to release my first album as an independent artist and plan to distribute with Reverbnation, in your opinion, is it more profitable to 1) start my own publishing company and sign up with BMI as a publisher, 2) sign up just as a songwriter, or 3) try to get signed by a publishing company first?

At 2:44 you mention you can still collect publishing royalties through your writer account? My question is, whats the point of signing up and handing over extra money for a publishing account if you already can collect your publishing royalties through your free writer account?
@tyniacoats5 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! I am adding it to my list for my next video. I'll explain it more in depth then, but a publisher account is good for 1) if you want to be the publisher for other songwriters 2) if you enter into a publishing administration deal or a co-publishing deal (if you are generating a good amount of $$, then a publishing admin can see that through your publisher account & then make a deal with you to manage all of the administrative work)

You are great. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. I really liked hearing about the history including who sits on the board of directors at ASCAP & BMI as well as the bit about ASCAP not registering blues, R&B, jazz and Latin in the early years. I’ve been signed up with BMI since the year 2000. No complaints or strong feelings about which PRO is better, or which would serve my needs better. As a regularly performing artist I really like the BMI Live program. Since I am not associated with a publisher I have been under the impression that I should receive the writer as well as publisher share of any royalties. Something you said in this video made me wonder if it shows that breakdown on my royalty statement. One contradiction that comes up over and over is that I hear people say that a writer must have their own publishing company established in order to collect the publisher’s share. Thanks in advance for any comments you can make about any of this. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your videos. All the best to you.

I did not know the current foreign PRO number. The rest is info I know. I've been in the industry for a while. My BIGGEST TAKEAWAY: how wonderful it is that you're so knowledgeable and teaching this stuff on this forum!!!! I've helped collect a lot of money by consulting with varied musicians. I've taught two classes on this. I am so grateful to you for making this available. you are someone every musician should watch. This is THE MUSIC BUSINESS. They need to hear you. They also need to get THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC 10th edition, M. William Krasilovsy. I know there are a lot of other books, but this is the one. And your videos. All of them.. Thank you.

I never knew that ASCAP was run by artists, and BMI was run by broadcasters, thank you!
