Fun fact cause at 4:08 you said Americans power is only at 120 volt Actually it comes it at base 240 but we cut it down For electric stoves you get a extra line directly from the breaker box and it supplies the stove with 240 , most heavy duty heating objects require it. I have a electric stove so I would know Also we do have kettles , we just like sauce pans so we can burn ourselves looking at the pretty bubbles.

@mspenrice6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but what comes out of most of your outlets is 110v RMS or so, and more importantly only at maybe 16 amps max, which is what really makes the difference. For heating applications, lower voltage over the final mile is better if anything, because you WANT to "waste" as much of the energy flowing through the circuit as heat in that one little coil of resistance wire (measuring maybe 5 yards max when unwound) with low volts and high amps (in comparison, distribution lines aim for high volts, low amps to minimise heating losses). But for safety's sake most practical domestic cabling (with conductors and insulation thin enough to have a meaningful amount of flex and not be particularly heavy to carry) is limited in how much current it's rated to carry, usually somewhere in the teens. European sockets are somewhere between medium and high power handling depending on exact type, as they're about 230v with either 10A or 16A = 2.3kW or 3.7kW maximum power before either a fuse blows, breaker trips, or the cable starts to overheat or become an arc risk. (Technically, the top rating is 250v at 16A, so 4kW exactly...) UK ones aren't too bad. 230v at 13A comes a gnat's pube short of 3.0kW. That's still a fair old bit of power, about what you get from a 50cc moped in full flight, and good for boiling water for drinks, food prep or washing up, or heating a single room (or charging an electric bike), though it starts to look a bit challenged when heating up an entire bath's worth of water in an immersion cylinder tank, attempting to keep a whole house warm in winter if the main 9kw+ system has packed in, or recharging an electric car. US outlets are stratified by voltage probably because of this, and because the common voltage for most rooms of the house is a somewhat safer-than-230 (but still enough to be deadly) 110v. The current ratings are similar to that of Europe, so you may have about 1.7kW available, or even just as little as 1.1kW, the latter being about what a 750~800w output microwave actually consumes. So little wonder anything that heats water - not just kettles, but coffee machines too - takes a long time about it, and it's thought a much better idea to use the higher voltage (or gas?) even if no higher current stove instead. These three quasi-standards (10, 13 and 16A) have actually ended up defining how the device end of an IEC "Kettle Lead" cable is arranged. On the wall socket end, it's whatever your local plug is. On the other, you have the little figure 8 (upto 3A) or cloverleaf (upto 5A) for low powered things, then you have the larger house-shaped plugs... 10A has the pins arranged so they make three parallel lines with the Earth running between the other two, with an unbroken outline, 13A has a notch in the outline between live and neutral (a key to prevent plugging a 10A cable into a device that draws between 10 and 13A), and 16A returns to not having a notch but with the rectangular shape of the pins rotated 90 degrees to form two parallel lines - Live and Neutral inline with each other, and Earth off to one side. Out of the three, in the UK only really the 13A is a proper "kettle lead", though some lower powered ones lack the notch in their sockets and will allow connection of a 10A as well. Naturally we don't really have anything that uses the 16A one, though I have seen it used on a server, more as a security measure than anything else. Note of course this is only for outlets. If you have your equipment hardwired to the breaker with and appropriately heavy duty cable it can be almost any current within reason (upto 45A is common on 230v boards, e.g. for power showers, with much chunkier cable than for portable devices, belying it rather thicker conductor and heavyweight insulation), regardless of voltage. What I'm wondering about is why 3-phase isn't so common for high power stuff in the UK. My own electric stovetop has terminals for and instructions in the manual that describe connecting up to a ~400v 3-phase supply, but nothing of the sort comes anywhere near my flat, nor has it been present anywhere else I've lived. 230v at higher current seems to be accepted as the answer to any particular high level power demand.

We heat water on the stove top with 240V mains power, or a gas flame, in the USA. A separate electric kettle like you have in the UK is not unheard of her, but it would indeed have to be 120V powered, which limits it's usefulness. So, it's just quicker to use a pot on the stove, or use the microwave, for a bit of boiling water.

BILL SCHNEIDER I thought the rms voltage for the USA was 120V?
@LeSarthois7 жыл бұрын
THey have 240 volts for largers appliances. I think it's three-phase 240 volts, like some houses and many companies have three phase 400 volts here, but that point need to be confirmed. I also remember that past standard unearthed or 3 pins 120 volts plugs, their high power plugs are non standardised - or most likely, a bunch of standards that no one dare to change.

Mind you, I am 55 years old, so things may have changed a bit here in the US in that time :) but when I was a kid we had a kettle in our kitchen, used principally for making tea. We had a separate kettle for making my dad's coffee, which my mom would make about 4:30AM prior to him heading off to the steel mill he worked at. I still drink tea (never developing a taste for coffee), but I don't make it in a kettle these days.

Canadians have the same type of power as in the USA and we still usually have kettles. They don't take that long to boil, either.

When compared to UK/Australia they do. Most kettles in UK/Australia are rated 2000W, with some up to 2400W. The Maximum you can get in the US is 1800W at the full 15A from the socket.

Well, we have kettles- just not electric ones. The kettles that you put on a hot stove and they whistle at you when they're done.... But I've heard of more Americans boiling water by using the microwave rather than in a pot on a stove.

It also depends on amperage, not just voltage. Also voltage doesn't really matter if you have some sort of transformer.
@PBMS1235 жыл бұрын
No it depends on power. Which is function of both. And given the maximum amperage you can draw from a domestic socket is capped at 15A in the US, 15A x 120V = 1800W. Which means the most amount power you can draw from a domestic socket is 1800W. In the UK the plugs are rated at 13A, but generally speaking the max current most devices will draw is 10A if rated fro a standard domestic outlet. So they could supply a theoretical maximum of 13A x 240V = 2990W. But at the 10A working limit that most appliances use, 10A x 240V = 2400W. In Australia technically a domestic outlet is on a 15A or 16A breaker, however the standard plug is called a 10A plug, and devices with this plug can only pull 10A or 2400W. So yes, in the standard context, voltage does matter, because the maximum power you can draw is lower on a 120V plug in the US, than on a 240V plug in either the UK or Australia. You buy pretty easily in Australia 2400W kettles for >$40 and a cheap $15 one from the supermarket is usually rated at 2000W standard.

Crumpets are similar to bread, although technically a savoury cake. The reason they are so delicious is because the holes increase the surface area, which allows you to put even more butter on, than you would a normal piece of bread.

When you mentioned mashed potato being served with an ice cream scoop it took me back to the school dinners I had at secondary school. The dinner lady would transfer it from the scoop with a practised flick of her wrist and it would hit your plate like a lump of white lead with bristles (because they never bothered to remove the eyes).
